Ontology of Leakage, Intensity, and Return: Toward a Regulatory Theory of Structural Incompleteness

Abstract

Abstract Reality is neither a set of fixed entities nor a pure lack, but a network of unstable distinctions between actuality, possibility, and return. In this article, the concept of “leakage” is formulated not as a metaphor but as an analytical operator that indicates the moment of failure in the closure of a structure’s fundamental distinctions (inside/outside, presence/absence, system/environment). Against romanticized readings of incompleteness, I argue that leakage is not a disruption but the condition of possibility for the stability, reproduction, and even collapse of structures. The key analytical tool is the “rate of closure,” which situates leakage on a spectrum from low-intensity (art, imagination) to high-intensity (crisis, breakdown). Three patterns of the return of the excluded (deferred, structural, and intensive) are then examined, alongside the role of leakage regulation in systems of power, language, and subjectivity. Finally, by accepting the “self-leakage principle” (any theory of leakage is itself leaky), I show that this self-referentiality is not a defect but a fundamental feature of any processual epistemology. Reality is the continuous process of regulating incompleteness – neither liberation from leakage nor its denial, but the management of its intensities.
