Abstract

Gender roles can enhance gender equality between men and women if they call for equal opportunities between all citizens regardless of sex. The status of Egyptian women has progressed over the years, mainly in health and education. However, with the women caregivers/men breadwinners model dominating Egyptian culture, several challenges remain at the economic, political, and social levels. The chapter highlights the significant influence of both formal and informal institutions on gender equality in Egypt. Our analysis suggests that improved outcomes for women are closely linked to a coordinated approach that not only focuses on reforming the legal framework but also addresses societal values and norms. The chapter concludes that progress toward gender equality often requires a comprehensive approach that addresses legal, social, and cultural barriers and promotes inclusive policies and practices.
