Abstract

In the conclusion, the historical story is summarized and the sophisticated pragmatist position that arises from Peirce and Ramsey is outlined. The debate between the various kinds of pragmatists is then set out and assessed in light of some of the important issues facing pragmatism and philosophy more generally. Is action linked to just the content of our beliefs or is it linked to their truth? Is there a fact-stating discourse that serves as a contrast to disputed kinds of discourse? How is the community of inquirers delineated? If one is a pragmatist, should one take the global, comprehensive view, or the local, expressivist view? A recommendation is made for a unified or global account of truth and inquiry.
