Abstract

This paper explores Meister Eckhart's doctrine of freedom as a quest for the authentic self-life ('true life'). Matsui argues that in Eckhart, the realization of original freedom coincides with the revelation of an ultimate truth: the birth of God. The actualization of this ultimate freedom, he contends, simultaneously transforms our understanding of world and being. The driving force of this transformation is the inner passion for primal freedom embedded within us.
