Earth Will Continue - On the Persistence Conditions of Human Civilization

Abstract

Humanity is not destroying Earth. Humanity is destabilizing the persistence substrate that carries its own existence. This paper reframes the ecological and civilizational crisis as a persistence-architecture problem: not a resource crisis, not a moral crisis, not a governance crisis — but a structural imbalance between transformation capacity and stabilization capacity that is driving the planetary persistence equation above its coherence boundary. Earth is treated as a coupled persistence system sustained over four billion years by the balance of Frame (stabilization structures), Module (transformation dynamics), and Coupling (integration capacity) — formalized as IR = R/(F·M·K) ≤ 1. Human civilization has emerged as a recursively transformation-amplifying Module: the first element in Earth's persistence history capable of exponentially amplifying its own M-coefficient, first through language and agriculture, then through fossil energy and industrial systems, now through digital technology and artificial intelligence. A central result is the T_visible Theorem: the persistence crisis of Earth precedes its visible manifestation by a duration determined by the Coupling reserve of the system. During this interval, the system appears stable by conventional indicators while IR > 1 is actively degrading structural reserves. This explains why every major environmental crisis has surprised the generation that inherited it — and why intervention consistently arrives after substantial structural commitment has already occurred. The paper further introduces two underrecognized structural mechanisms: the destruction of Coupling capacity through biodiversity loss and ecological simplification, and the role of knowledge and culture as K-infrastructure whose degradation constitutes a second, less visible coupling crisis. Finally, it derives structural conditions for persistence-compatible civilization — not as moral prescriptions but as architectural requirements for a civilization that intends to remain viable.
