Abstract

To this point in our AI journey, we have described in detail the power and the promise of artificial intelligence tools and technologies. It is time to step back from the AI technical story and bring forward several important ethical questions: What requirements justify the use of AI software? Can the results of AI algorithms be analyzed and justified? Can AI algorithms be deployed and trusted in social contexts? Do AI algorithms violate the freedoms or privacies of individuals? When can decisions made by an AI algorithm replace those made by humans? When will AI bots replace human workers? This list of questions is a small sample of the serious issues that arise with our society’s development and adoption of AI technology.
