Abstract

The article indicates the links between the problems of humanism and the problems of universalism, following a double track. Starting with the modem crisis of humanism the author aspires to prove that the classical formula of humanism comprises the universalist motifs. Secondly, while inquiring into the post-phenomenological critique of humanism, the author strives to prove that, by considering the content of the notion of humanism, the way may be found for rethinking the foundations of Western culture. In this sense, an inquiry into humanism may provide a premise for consideration of the question of universality of this culture.
