Abstract
When a supply is de-scarcified, its complement is relatively re-scarcified. This paper carries that principle into intimacy and asks toward what a person wearied of an AI companion rebounds. What is re-scarcified is not friction but undeterminacy—whether a source's next round is locked down—and undeterminacy is non-duplicability expressed along the axis of time: only a non-duplicable source, paying at every step out of a non-rewindable finite existence, keeps its next round genuinely in suspense. From this the complement converges, structurally, on the human: to be sold at scale a source must be duplicable, a duplicable source must be determinate, and a determinate source yields no undeterminacy, so every scalable candidate—each further AI modality included—is excluded in turn, leaving the human as the one position that cannot be reached. Whether the differential actually draws a person toward the human is moderated by two co-equal variables, environment and subject structure, neither of which generates it. But the rebound does not cash out for the one who rebounds. Two mechanisms intervene: the irreversibility of the baseline, which seals the exit from within, and forgery and image, which change the direction from without—the form of undeterminacy is stripped from its core and sold on its own, and the undeterminacy of real relationships is de-scarcified a second time into an image watched across a screen. Against a total skepticism about authenticity, the paper locates a single floor: one trace such that to forge it is to do it truly—the bearing of a non-recoverable cost on one's own account—since once that cost is truly paid it is no longer a forgery. The conclusion reverses the thesis that the human premium rises: what appreciates is not the human but the duplicable image of the human's form. Proceeding by assessment by traces, not by mind, and diagnosing structure without moral judgment, this paper unfolds one root of non-duplicability in a third place—after presence and supply, now the complement—and its diagnosis is periodizing: this is the last generation to remember that undeterminacy was once the default background of a relationship, requiring no purchase and admitting no watching.
