Abstract

While there were slave revolts in antiquity, and ascendant merchant classes in late medieval Europe, changing material conditions provided the basis for new collective identities, which could be differentiated from those of both peasants and nobles. The discovery of Islamic translations of Graeco-Roman philosophy and science culminated in the Renaissance, which would lead to a variety of cultural movements.
