Abstract

Having defined the five senses in _DA_ II, Aristotle seeks in II.1–2 to show how they individually and together are adequate to explain a range of other kinds of perception: common and accidental perception, as well as perceiving that we perceive. Common perception is interpreted as a function that several of the senses have individually, while accidental perception involves the cooperation of the senses pointing to the role of the common sense. Perceiving that one sees or hears is a form of accidental perception performed by the individual senses in collaboration, again, with the other senses.
