Abstract

Artificial Intelligence refers to computer systems that can think and behave like humans. It is becoming essential in the education system as it has the potential to transform the way of teaching and learning in an academic environment. Therefore, the current study aims to investigate LIS students' attitudes and perceptions of AI, as well as how these technologies benefit their academic performance. The study also identified barriers that LIS students confront when adopting AI tools. For this purpose, a survey questionnaire was designed to assess students' knowledge and attitudes concerning AI, as well as its applications to improve academic performance. The study involved a total of 200 students. The findings show that the vast majority of respondents are familiar with AI, yet there are substantial gender variations in knowledge and usage, with male respondents displaying better AI literacy. AI tools such as Grammarly, research assistants and ChatGPT are widely used, but their adoption varies, with financial limitations and a lack of AI understanding. The study also highlights both the advantages and disadvantages of using AI in education. A majority of respondents recognize AIs’ abilities for boosting learning efficiency, improving access to resources, and facilitating personalized learning. However, concerns relate to plagiarism, data privacy, academic integrity, and over-reliance on AI affecting the critical thinking ability of the students. On the basis of the findings, it is suggested to improve AI literacy programs and institutions should establish clear policies for using AI for educational activities. These suggestions aim to foster a smarter and more ethical approach to AI in education.
