Abstract

This chapter describes, analyzes and evaluates the discussion of Tarski’s paper that immediately followed its presentation and Maria Kokoszyńska’sKokoszyńska, Maria related presentation. TheKokoszyńska, Maria chapter uses published and mostly contemporary reports of the discussion by A. J. AyerAyer, Alfred Jules, Rudolf CarnapCarnap, Rudolf, Janina Hosiasson-LindenbaumowaHosiasson-Lindenbaumowa, Janina, Otto NeurathNeurath, Ottoobjections to Tarski's definition of truth, andNeurath, OttoZygmunt Zawirski. NeurathNeurath, Otto objected personally to Tarski’s use of the word ‘true’ for the concept that he was defining, on the ground that this term could lead to confusion and make metaphysics respectable. Despite his personal objection, he reported that the ideas of Tarski and KokoszyńskaKokoszyńska, Maria met with general approval. The consensus was that Tarski had made it scientifically acceptable to talk about the relation between linguistic expressions on the one hand and objects and states of affairs on the other hand.
