Abstract

This chapter moves to consider three approaches to “Wittgenstein on religion” that pursue a different kind of line. These are found in the work of Norman Malcolm, Phillip R Shields, and James C. Edwards. All three aim to find an analogical relationship between religious faith and Wittgenstein’s understanding of philosophy. The chapter examines the structural analogies that these philosophers have identified between religion and both the _Tractatus_ and the _Investigations_. The chapter concludes by following a clue in Peter Winch’s criticisms of Norman Malcolm, and sets out one way in which there is a bridge to be built between the task of understanding religion and Wittgenstein’s distinctive philosophical method.
