Abstract

This chapter examines the work of Yasóvijaya Gaṇi, who is considered one of Jainism's great intellectuals. It describes Yasóvijaya's intellectual biography, which consists of his apprenticeship in Vārāṇāsī studying the new reason; his writing of Jaina philosophical treatises that adapt the techniques and methods of the new reason; and his time spent on writing works that explore the nature of the individual self. The chapter concludes with an evaluation of one of Yasóvijaya's ethical works, the _Essence of Knowledge_, which describes thirty-two moral and intellectual virtues jointly constitutive of a virtuous character.
