Abstract

This chapter highlights women’s contributions to Italy’s archaeology from the Unification (1871) to contemporary times. By analyzing the contribution of central female protagonists in Classical Archaeology and Etruscology of Italy, two very traditional and male-dominated disciplines, this paper will investigate if the Archaeology made by women has been any different from that made by men. The chapter also honors Laura Nicotra, who has studied female classical archaeologists working in Italy from the middle of the nineteenth to the twenty-first century. It, too, introduces the work of three female archaeologists working in Italy on Pre-Roman Archaeology, also my research field. Comparatively, I have statistically investigated if women and men have had the same opportunities in academia to analyze if there is a female archaeology in Italy or if we can only discuss great archaeologists who happened to be women.
