Abstract

This chapter advocates for the creation of a modified method for the bioethics profession that will allow it to better defend its jurisdictions. The new method is a modified version of common morality principlism where the principles held by the general public are determined empirically by social scientists. Besides this one change, the method would be used as it currently is, with the bioethics profession becoming more clearly known as the profession that weighs and balances the multiple principles of the public in relation to a medical or scientific technology. The chapter concludes the chapter by describing the proposed bioethical work in the health care ethics consultation, research bioethics, public policy bioethics and cultural bioethics jurisdictions. The chapter argues that bioethicists should abandon work in cultural bioethics because it would now be inconsistent with holding their other jurisdictions.
