Abstract

This chapter was originally presented to the Society for Gay and Lesbian Philosophy in 1997. It was a response to papers by Kevin Hill and Tamsin Lorraine, which raised complicated issues: how to “queer” Nietzsche, how to understand him, whether the tradition of postmodern French Nietzscheans is helpful to gays and lesbians, and/or helpful for understanding Nietzsche. The chapter argues against two relatively common views of Nietzsche in relation to homosexuality: that he was anti-gay and that he was gay.
