Abstract

Some theorists argue that the data surrounding the practice of mixed quotation establish that it is not a real form of quotation (and in so doing they present a particular interpretation of (D7) and (D8)). In particular, these theorists argue that quotation marks in mixed quotes can be dropped without a loss of meaning. This chapter examines these data and their various interpretations. It is argued that “impure quotes” do not pose a challenge to a theory of quotation, though they do present a challenge for a theory of the _saying relation_.
