Abstract

This chapter examines Cohen’s Jewish writings from this decade. These writings reflect various concerns. One is Cohen’s interest in Jewish education, especially in schools for the poor and the establishment of chairs of Jewish learning. Cohen strongly believed that the Jews were doomed to extinction unless they could build strong educational institutions to continue their traditions. Cohen now abandons his earlier project for a synthesis of Christianity and Judaism and stresses instead the differences between these religions and the value of the distinctive doctrines of Judaism. One article from this decade, ‘Autonomie und Freiheit’, reflects Cohen’s abiding interest in Spinoza, and stresses the importance of his concept of love for Jewish devotion.
