Abstract

Bridging the Gap? On the Use and Abuse of the Bridging Principle for Ethics. The world is full of ditches, abysses, faults or “gaps”, even in philosophy. Fortunately, there are bridges to create - more or less stable - connections. This chapter is about these bridges, about their sustainability, and about an alternative to reach the other side. For this purpose, relevant aspects of the is-ought dichotomy are recapitulated by the author. This is followed by an explication and analysis of the feasibility postulate to illustrate and reconsider the potential and difficulties of bridge principles. If it is not possible to bridge the gap between is and ought, maybe one will have to risk jumping the gap, the author argues. This is the focus of the last part of this chapter.
