Abstract

This chapter applies feminist theoretical approaches to an exploration of medieval female subject consciousness in writings by female medieval mystics, Angela of Foligno, Catherine of Siena, and Margery Kempe, secular writings of Christine de Pizan, and powerful female characters of Giovanni Boccaccio and Geoffrey Chaucer. It also presents original concept of lo specchio spaccato as a metaphor to illustrate the transformative process that occurs through writing production.
