Tafsir Education in Islamic Higher Studies in Bangladesh: Historical Roots, Institutional Structures, and Contemporary Challenges

Abstract

Tafsir education in Islamic higher education in Bangladesh is an important field of knowledge, rooted in the traditions of classical madrasas and Darul Ulooms, and its current reach is reflected both nationally and internationally. The purpose of this study is to analyze the historical development, institutional structure, curriculum, epistemological significance, and contemporary relevance of Tafsir education in Bangladesh. Chapter 1 discusses the research background, objectives, research questions, and methodology. Chapter 2 examines the history of Tafsir education, tracing its development from early Islamic civilization to the Indian subcontinent and Bangladesh. Chapter 3 analyzes the structure of Islamic higher education in Bangladesh and the status of Tafsir education at the university level. Chapter 4 reviews the epistemological and philosophical significance of Tafsir literature. Chapter 5 investigates the trends in Tafsir education through university and madrasa curricula, syllabi, and case studies. Chapter 6 explores the contemporary relevance of Tafsir education, including its socio-cultural impact and challenges. Chapter 7 presents the overall conclusions of the study and provides future recommendations. The research demonstrates that Tafsir education is not merely a part of religious instruction but forms a foundational basis for social thought, ethical values, human development, and knowledge practices in contemporary contexts. While its institutional development in Bangladesh’s higher education is substantial, there is a need to incorporate modern research-oriented approaches, critical perspectives, and emerging issues in the international arena.
