Abstract

A modern science student can usually understand Ibn al-Djazarī’s the Mukaddima without needing a commentary. However, the topic of maḳṭūʿ and muttaṣil is quite challenging due to the author's approach, the text's metrical structure, and the preferred method. The author's failure to clearly show the patterns related to the topic and the writing styles they represent makes the text hard to read and understand. Therefore, the main issue is that the subject of maḳṭūʿ and muttaṣil in Ibn al-Djazarī’s the Muḳaddima is unclear in terms of method, language, and meaning, making it difficult for today's researchers to interpret directly. This study aims to clarify this ambiguity, systematically present Ibn al-Djazarī’s method, and explain why words are written separately or together, depending on their meanings. Additionally, it aims to fill the gap in Turkish literature on this subject and support the correct reading of the Qur'an. The research used documentation method to gather sources, content analysis to examine data within the frameworks of recitation, language, and exegesis, classification to organize information, and the comparative method to contrast the Muḳaddima’s writings with the modern Qur'an copies. The study focuses on the maḳṭūʿ and muttaṣil words discussed in the Muḳaddima. These words are analysed by comparing them with classical commentaries and contemporary copies of the Quran. Unlike commentaries, this study not only lists related verses but also examines each pattern introduced in the introduction, focusing on language and meaning. It also discusses how these patterns appear in current printed copies of the Quran. The results reveal that modern copies of the Quran generally follow the patterns in the Muḳaddima regarding maḳṭūʿ and muttaṣil, though some preferences differ. Additionally, the separate or combined spellings of maḳṭūʿ and muttaṣil carried out in the introduction have subtle linguistic and semantic implications.
