Augmented reality (AR) technologies function to ‘augment’ normal perception by superimposing virtual objects onto an agent’s visual field. The philosophy of augmented reality is a small but growing subfield within the philosophy of technology. Existing work in this subfield includes research on the phenomenology of augmented experiences, the metaphysics of virtual objects, and different ethical issues associated with AR systems, including (but not limited to) issues of privacy, property rights, ownership, trust, and informed consent. This paper addresses some (...) epistemological issues posed by AR systems. I focus on a near-future version of AR technology called the Real-World Web, which promises to radically transform the nature of our relationship to digital information by mixing the virtual with the physical. I argue that the Real-World Web (RWW) threatens to exacerbate three existing epistemic problems in the digital age: the problem of digital distraction, the problem of digital deception, and the problem of digital divergence. The RWW is poised to present new versions of these problems in the form of what I call the augmented attention economy, augmented skepticism, and the problem of other augmented minds. The paper draws on a range of empirical research on AR and offers a phenomenological analysis of virtual objects as perceptual affordances to help ground and guide the speculative nature of the discussion. It also considers a few policy-based and designed-based proposals to mitigate the epistemic threats posed by AR technology. (shrink)

Virtual reality headsets present us with two images, one directly before each of our eyes. One might therefore suppose that virtual reality offers experiences with the phenomenology of many other depictive images – an experience of seeing-in. This paper argues that the phenomenology of virtual reality does not involve seeing-in due to our lacking the required awareness of virtual reality images’ configuration. Instead, virtual reality is intended to generate an experience resembling that of everyday perception, (...) artificially recreating the phenomenology of various experiences. Interestingly, however, the present technical limitations of virtual reality frequently also generate an underrecognized form of twofold experience, where we are perceptually aware of both the content of a virtual reality image and the way that content is represented, yet still without our seeing-in. But while this twofold experience is often unintended, it can also be deliberately aimed at to help guard against some of virtual reality’s potential harms. (shrink)

The history of humankind is full of examples that indicate a constant desire to make human beings more moral. Nowadays, technological breakthroughs might have a significant impact on our moral character and abilities. This is the case of Virtual Reality (VR) technologies. The aim of this paper is to consider the ethical aspects of the use of VR in enhancing empathy. First, we will offer an introduction to VR, explaining its fundamental features, devices and concepts. Then, we will approach (...) the characterization of VR as an “empathy machine,” showing why this medium has aroused so much interest and why, nevertheless, we do not believe it is the ideal way to enhance empathy. As an alternative, we will consider fostering empathy-related abilities through virtual embodiment in avatars. In the conclusion, however, we will, we will examine some of the serious concerns related to the ethical relevance of empathy and will defend the philosophical case for a reason-guided empathy, also suggesting specific guidelines for possible future developments of empathy enhancement projects through VR embodied experiences. It is commonly assumed that a virtual life would be less meaningful (perhaps even meaningless). As virtual reality technologies develop and become more integrated into our everyday lives, this poses a challenge for those that care about meaning in life. In this chapter, it is argued that the common assumption about meaninglessness and virtuality is mistaken. After clarifying the distinction between two different visions of virtual reality, four arguments are presented for thinking that meaning is possible in virtual (...) reality. Following this, four objections are discussed and rebutted. The chapter concludes that we can be cautiously optimistic about the possibility of meaning in virtual worlds. (shrink)

Across institutions, technologies, and knowledge environments, systems increasingly remain operational while producing outcomes that feel hollow, performative, or disconnected from reality. Metrics improve even as results degrade, language remains fluent as meaning erodes, and individuals experience cognitive exhaustion and disorientation without obvious error, deception, or collapse. Existing explanations such as corruption, misinformation, misaligned incentives, or information overload capture surface symptoms. However, they fail to identify a unifying structural mechanism. This paper proposes Reality Drift, a theory of representational failure (...) in scaled symbolic systems. The core claim is that, as symbolic systems expand and optimize, their representations drift away from reality faster than corrective constraints can bind them. This drift is gradual, non-intentional, and self-reinforcing. Systems continue to function, but meaning detaches. Optimization replaces reference and symbols circulate autonomously. As a result, human cognition adapts at increasing cost. The paper introduces a five-operator explanatory grammar consisting of drift, constraint, compression, representation, and filtering. Together these describe how the condition emerges and persists across domains. The theory generates testable predictions for institutions, artificial intelligence, and human cognition while providing a structural diagnosis of how meaning degrades under scale. (shrink)

I discuss how virtual reality can be used to acquire self-knowledge. Lawlor (Philos Phenomenol Res 79(1):47–75, 2009) and Cassam (Vices of the mind: from the intellectual to the political. OUP, Oxford, 2014) develop inferential accounts of self-knowledge in which one can use imagination to acquire self-knowledge. This is done by actively prompting imaginary scenarios and observing one’s reactions to those scenarios. These reactions are then used as the inferential basis for acquiring self-knowledge. I suggest that the imaginary scenarios can (...) be in principle replaced with scenarios in virtual reality in a way that still provides an inferential basis for self-knowledge. Instead of internal prompting in imagination, I call this external prompting in virtual reality. I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of external prompting. On one hand, external prompting avoids some of the common biases that can intervene with internal prompting in imagination. On the other hand, external prompting comes with some challenges of its own. External prompting might be more time-consuming and might be open to a game-like approach of the agent leading to a different sort of distortion that gets in the way of self-knowledge. I suggest that these are practical challenges, but nevertheless, external prompting seems worthwhile for self-knowledge that is otherwise especially difficult to acquire. (shrink)

Objective reality is often assumed to exist independently of any observer. Yet concepts like past and future appear to depend on how systems register and process information. This essay argues that only the present is ontologically fundamental, while past and future emerge through observer-dependent structures. This work is a step in a broader exploration of the limits of knowability.

This paper provides the logical derivation of Reality Repair Theory (RRT) and its operational component, the Hedonic Core Framework (HCF), from the single non-contingent foundation of all possible knowledge: conscious experience (Sergent, n.d.-a). It demonstrates that the existence of suffering, defined by its intrinsic negative valence, constitutes a primary structural problem. This foundation, building on the framework of Experiential Empiricism (Sergent, n.d.-b), provides a robust, unambiguous solution to the AI alignment problem by defining the primary goal of any conscious (...) AI system: the elimination of suffering. Any coherent system of thought must recognize this as its primary and most urgent objective, dissolving traditional philosophical problems like the "is-ought" gap and the problem of other minds (Sergent, n.d.-c). Erick J. Ramirez, Miles Elliott and Per‑Erik Milam (2021) have recently claimed that using Virtual Reality (VR) as an educational nudge to promote empathy is unethical. These authors argue that the influence exerted on the participant through virtual simulation is based on the deception of making them believe that they are someone else when this is impossible. This makes the use of VR for empathy enhancement a manipulative strategy in itself. In this article, we show that Ramirez et al.’s (...) ethical rejection of empathy enhancement through VR is based on confusion. First, we show that this misunderstanding stems from the conception of empathy-enhancing simulations solely as failed attempts at “being someone else,” along with ignoring the crucial difference between the psychological perspective-taking processes of imagine-other and imagine-self. Then, having overcome that misconception, we argue that the ethical misgivings about the use of VR to promote empathy should disappear and that these projects have greater potential for behavioural change than purely sympathy-focused interventions. Selective Reality Theory (SRT) is a transdisciplinary unified ontological framework built upon the core thesis that "Existence = Selection." This paper presents a comprehensive review of the SRT theoretical system, covering its axiomatic foundations, mathematical formalization, and systematic applications across six major domains: quantum physics, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, philosophical ethics, social science, and spiritual practice. SRT proposes a Triadic Ontology: the Latent Domain L0 (the set of all unselected possibilities), the Manifest Domain L1 (the presently anchored reality through (...) selection), and the Convergence Domain L2 (stable constraint structures sedimented from selection history). The core mechanism connecting these three domains is the Ghost Operator (G^θ), a parameterized selection mapping characterized by embodiment parameters θ. The theory's unifying power resides in the Cross-Scale Isomorphism Theorem: the same selection dynamics equations operate in a self-similar fashion across scales—from quantum collapse to neural ignition, from social norm formation to spiritual awakening. This chapter investigates whether signs and their action, semiosis, are real. It critically surveys three arguments. The first argument consists in holding that semiosis must be real, because denying the reality of signs is self-defeating. This self-confirming status seems to imply that semiosis is the very means by which we partition the mind-independent and mind-dependent. One would then need to clarify this ontological neutrality or priority. The second argument consists in identifying an instance of sign-action that is mind-independent. Instead (...) of searching for abiotic semiosis, a more parsimonious approach is to ask whether we want reality to be what exists apart from minds in general or apart from human minds specifically. If we adopt the latter view, and if the action of signs can be shown to take place in the non-human realm, this would show that semiosis does not depend on us. One would then need to explain how humans can interpret all this while putting themselves out of the equation, so to speak. The third argument consists in saying that, despite its initial plausibility, the mind-dependent and mind-independent division is not clear-cut. This is because some conventional patterns can be informationally compressed in ways that are practically indistinguishable from genuinely mind-independent patterns. I argue for a new account of Kant's concept of objective reality. Objective reality should be understood as nomic actuality. The notion of nomic actuality is inspired by Kant's concept of nature in the most general sense, which describes the existence of things under laws. I will argue that this nomic conception of objective reality has various advantages over rival readings, such as accounts of objective reality as actuality or in terms of real possibility.

The history of human thought can be read as a prolonged oscillation between the generative vitality of reality and the stabilizing, ultimately ossifying structures of the symbolic. In its earliest form, the symbolic emerges as a compression tool. A way to represent, transmit, and coordinate perceptions of the real across individuals and over time. Language, ritual, law, and cultural memory are all products of this compression. Their initial value lies in their ability to preserve coherence, holding together shared maps (...) of the world in the face of fragmentation and forgetfulness. But every compression carries the seed of distortion. Once a symbolic structure is in place, it tends to reinforce its own categories, privileging internal consistency over ongoing contact with the adaptive flux of reality. In time, this self-referential loop becomes an attractor. A domain of stability that resists perturbation not because it is optimally fitted to the real, but because it has become self-sustaining. Human understanding is mediated by consciousness and observation, imposing inherent constraints on scientific theories and ontologies. This paper develops a framework distinguishing eternal reality (ontologically complete but epistemically inaccessible) from effective reality in consciousness. The effective reality emerges from a subset of eternal reality that underlies observable phenomena. Within this framework, infinity emerges not as an ontological property of reality but as an idealized boundary concept marking the limits of modeling. Ontologies, grounded in observation yet (...) extendable through coherent intuitions, must remain finite and constraint-respecting to model eternal reality. This framework clarifies the epistemic foundations of scientific theories, the bounded nature of human knowledge, and the proper role of infinity in theoretical abstraction. (shrink)

This paper presents an original conception according to which reality is not an attribute of objects or subjects, but of definite predicates. We distinguish clearly between reality (applicable to definite predicates) and truth (applicable to propositions). A definite predicate is real if and only if there exists a unique subject satisfying its description and the sufficient conditions for its instantiation obtain. Analogies with quantum mechanics illustrate the objective indeterminacy of definite predicates and the conditional evolution of their (...) class='Hi'>reality. We introduce a novel perspective: reality about the past is not fixed; it evolves, and must evolve, by present predication, even though the past itself does not change. This principle applies to all past subjects and their definite descriptions. Applications include historical, geographical, and physical descriptions, demonstrating a coherent semantic framework. Finite descriptions are partial, conditioned, and often plural. Yet they do not ordinarily present themselves as sealed worlds. They present themselves as renderings of a reality that can be more or less adequately disclosed, contested, and corrected. This paper argues that the very intelligibility of finite disclosure, substantive disagreement, descriptive misfit, and correction presupposes a sufficiently shared and non-fragmented reality. The claim defended here is modest but strong. It is stronger than the thought that distinct frameworks merely coordinate, (...) overlap, or interoperate for practical purposes, but weaker than the thesis that reality must therefore admit one final exhaustive vocabulary. The paper thus advances a shared-reality or coherence-based unity thesis: reality must be common and constraint-bearing enough for multiple renderings to answer to one target, even though no single finite rendering can be presumed to exhaust that target. I situate this proposal between stronger forms of scientific realism, perspectival and plural realist positions, and condition-oriented or transcendental styles of argument. I then develop the core distinctions between shared reality, shared usage, interoperability, answerability, misfit, and correction, and show how the framework clarifies scientific model plurality, institutional representation, and cases of epistemic injustice. The paper does not claim to prove maximal monism, settle a complete process ontology, or eliminate all anti-realist alternatives. Its narrower aim is to show that shared reality is not an optional metaphysical add-on, but a condition of disclosure itself. (shrink)

Reality is composed of many layers, including what John Searle calls “brute facts” and, superimposed on these, what he calls “social reality”. Ontology is the study of reality in its various layers, and involves attempts to describe that reality in ways that are useful and logically consistent. Philosophers and others who attempt to “build” ontologies, must examine the manners in which we can best describe objects, and devise structured vocabularies that can be used consistently, often across (...) disciplines, and now with an eye toward automation such that when people use terms to describe reality, a greater consistency, and thus better understanding, ensues. Any object of intentionality is capable of ontological analysis and greater clarity. Abstract objects composed by collective intentionality, such as the institutions and other objects that comprise “social reality”, are especially rich domains for ontological analysis. (shrink)

For centuries, physicists, philosophers, and mystics alike have pondered the most fundamental question of all: Why is there something rather than nothing? Traditional physics doesn’t really attempt to answer this—it simply assumes existence as a given. But what if we could derive it from first principles? Enter, the Reality Equation, a somewhat tongue-in-cheek formulation that, despite its playfulness, seems to hold up across quantum mechanics, cosmology, information theory, and even governance models.

Typical discussions of virtual reality (VR) fixate on technology for providing sensory stimulation of a certain kind. They thus fail to understand reality as the place wherein we live and work, misunderstanding it instead as merely a sort of presentation. The first half of the paper examines popular conceptions of VR. The most common conception is a shallow one according to which VR is a matter of simulating appearances. Yet there is, even in popular depictions, a second, more (...) subtle conception according to which VR is a matter of facilitating new kinds of interaction. The latter half of the paper turns to questions about the contemporary technology of Internet chatrooms. The fact that chatrooms can be used in certain ways suggests something about the prospects for VR. The penultimate section asks whether chatrooms may legitimately be thought of as places. (In a sense, they may.) The final section asks whether cybersex may legitimately be thought of as sex. (Again, yes.) Chatroom technology thus provides an argument for the second conception of VR over its much ballyhooed rival. (shrink)

This essay asks what reality must be like if conscious experience can emerge within it without being present from the beginning. Building on the notions of pre-subjective openness and pre-phenomenal subjectivability, it argues that consciousness should be understood neither as an inexplicable product of closed actuality nor as a primordial feature of reality itself. Reductive physicalism fails to account for the emergence of interiority from merely external processes, while panpsychism avoids this difficulty only by assuming that consciousness is (...) already present from the beginning, at least in latent or elementary form. Against both alternatives, the essay proposes a real-imaginary conception of reality, developed since 2003 and later extended into a quaternionic framework. In this view, reality is not exhausted by present actuality, but includes an intrinsic dimension of structured possibility. The real-imaginary structure grounds pre-subjective openness, while its quaternionic differentiation provides the formal basis for pre-phenomenal subjectivability. Conscious experience emerges when structured possibility becomes sufficiently integrated, self-referential, stabilized, and centered. Reality is therefore not originally conscious, but originally structured so as to make possible the emergence of consciously experiencing subjects. (shrink)

This paper critically examines the argument for discreteness as a fundamental property of reality, a perspective advanced in fields such as quantum mechanics, computational models, and digital philosophy. Proponents of this view assert that the universe operates as a system of finite, quantized units, reducible to discrete particles, bits, or mathematical constructs. While compelling in specific contexts, discreteness is not an intrinsic feature of reality but an emergent phenomenon arising under particular conditions and shaped by the limitations of (...) observational tools and mathematical abstractions. Using the philosophical frameworks of Dynamic Materialism and Adaptive Realism, and the scientific lens of Neodynamics, this paper explores the limitations of the discreteness argument. I critique its dependence on idealized models, its misinterpretation of quantum and relativistic theories, and its tendency to overlook the emergent nature of discrete phenomena within continuous systems, highlighting how tools and methods of observation, constrained by resolution and scale, often impose artificial boundaries that create the illusion of fundamental discreteness. I present continuity as a more foundational framework, emphasizing its role in supporting emergent coherence, nested scales of interaction, and feedback-driven adaptation. By integrating stochastic and continuous dynamics into our understanding of complex systems, I advocate for a shift away from reductionist models toward a relational and adaptive approach that better reflects the interconnected nature of reality. This paper aims to reframe the discreteness vs. continuity debate, offering a nuanced synthesis that bridges philosophical and scientific perspectives while pointing to future directions for exploration and integration. This essay brings together the central ontological claims developed across fifteen earlier articles. It argues that reality is identical neither with mere factuality nor with an abstract reserve of bare possibilities. Reality must instead be understood as a structured open process in which actuality emerges from potentiality without ever fully exhausting it. The ontological point of departure thus shifts: in place of a being determined by a hidden principle, there appears an immanent nexus of processual dynamics in which (...) structures take shape as metastable orders. This same basic tension appears dynamically as the relation between structure and openness, or, equivalently, between determinacy and contingency. Processes are ordered and directed without thereby being fully fixed; alternative possibilities remain really operative within the unfolding of events. Contingency is therefore not merely a function of the observer’s ignorance, but an ontological feature of nondeterministic reality. From this follows an epistemological consequence: because reality comprises more than what is presently actual, it can only be adequately described through models. Space-time structures, possibility spaces, attractor landscapes, or comparable formal architectures are indispensable for articulating the inner complexity of real processes. Yet such models, however necessary, are not themselves constituents of reality. On this basis, teleodynamic field ontology interprets meaning, consciousness, and teleology not as secondary additions to an otherwise meaningless world, but as immanent modes in which a relationally structured reality becomes articulable, intelligible, and oriented toward coherence. In contemporary discussions, NARD is closely connected to the thesis of revelation, the claim that the essences of phenomenal properties are revealed in experience, though the connection between the two requires clarification. This paper distinguishes different versions of NARD and homes in on a particular version that is closely connected to revelation. This essay continues the philosophical synthesis developed in Reality as a Structured Process. Part I argued that reality is not exhausted by factual actuality, but must be understood as a structured open process in which actuality emerges from potentiality without eliminating it. The present essay examines how this structured openness becomes accessible, centered, experienced, and interpreted. The argument unfolds in four steps. First, the distinction between observable and non-observable structure is interpreted epistemically rather than ontologically. What becomes measurable (...) is not opposed to the real, but represents a finite mode of disclosure within a richer physical organization. Second, consciousness is understood neither as a universal property of all things nor as a miraculous emergence from pure exteriority. It arises where openness, selective stabilization, resonance, integration, self-reference, and centering generate a stable inner domain. Third, the essay distinguishes between pre-subjective openness, pre-phenomenal subjectivability, and phenomenality. Reality may be intrinsically open to the emergence of experience without already being experiential in its most basic structure; yet this openness becomes relevant to consciousness only insofar as it can be organized, under specific conditions, as an inner perspective. This allows for a non-reductive account of consciousness that avoids both reductive physicalism and classical panpsychism. Finally, the essay turns to meditative, nondual, and spiritual experience. Such experiences may be profound, transformative, and therapeutically significant, yet they do not by themselves establish a final metaphysical ontology. The structure of an experience is not automatically the structure of reality. A responsible philosophy of consciousness must therefore distinguish experience, interpretation, ontology, usefulness, and epistemic authority. The result is an open realism in which observability, consciousness, healing, and spiritual meaning appear as modes of disclosure within the space of possibilities, without reducing reality to factuality or inflating experience into metaphysical certainty. Bell’s theorem reveals a profound puzzle: quantum measurements on entangled particles exhibit correlations across spacelike separations that defy classical locality. Traditionally, resolving this “spooky action at a distance” has seemed to demand either a block-universe view (with all outcomes laid out and equally real in a static 4D spacetime) or a retreat from realism (e.g. treating the wavefunction and collapse as mere calculation tools without objective reality). Existential Realism (ER) offers a middle path. Within ER’s two-tier framework, outcomes come (...) into existence only in their local present moments, while entangled correlations remain real as non-present structures that condition and delimit those outcomes. This framework maintains a genuine temporal becoming (only present events are fully actual) even as it acknowledges a deeper causal structure that extends beyond the present. As a result, ER can reconcile quantum nonlocality with a present-centric view of time: the entangled “realities” provide structure across distance, but only manifest as present existences when observed. In this paper, we articulate how Bell nonlocality can be understood within the ER framework – preserving relativistic causality (no faster-than-light signals) and the reality of quantum correlations without invoking an eternal block universe. We show that Bell’s experiment, far from undermining a dynamic present, strengthens the case for ER’s two-tier framework of time by demanding a category of reality beyond immediate existence. Each measurement outcome “collapses” into existence locally, even as a holistic, non-local reality ties the outcomes together. Thus, Bell’s nonlocal correlations become an argument for a nuanced realism of time: one in which only the present exists, but much more than the present is real. The result is a conception of nature that upholds both the physical reality of quantum phenomena and the experiential truth of an unfolding present. (shrink)

Contemporary debates in philosophy, science, media studies, and technology are increasingly shaped by conflicts over what counts as real. These conflicts are frequently framed as contests between realism and relativism, objectivity and construction, facts and narratives. This paper argues that such oppositions conceal a more fundamental problem: the absence of a coherent framework for distinguishing modes and degrees of reality. Relative Reality Theory (RRT) develops a systematic account of reality as a graded and mode-specific status rather than (...) as an absolute property. Reality is understood as a function of experiential immediacy, intersubjective stability, and functional efficacy. On this basis, RRT reconstructs distinct modes of reality, subjective, intersubjective, and functional reality, without dissolving them into a unified ontological hierarchy or reducing them to mere opinions. RRT provides a conceptual framework for analyzing real-world phenomena such as scientific models, media realities, political narratives, simulations, and virtual environments. By clarifying the conditions under which something can count as real in a given sense, the theory avoids both ontological absolutism and arbitrary relativism. It provides tools for identifying category mistakes, resolving apparent conflicts of reality, and understanding why certain realities remain stable despite contestation. The paper positions RRT as a philosophical ordering framework rather than as an operative or technical theory of model management. Its aim is not to calculate or optimize reality claims, but to clarify their modes, scope, limits, and conditions of validity. In doing so, RRT contributes to contemporary epistemology and philosophy of science by providing a precise vocabulary for navigating reality under conditions of pluralism, mediality, and systemic complexity. All existence is either patterned or random. Both are mathematical. This exhaustive dichotomy, the pattern-randomness dichotomy (PRD), establishes mathematical structure as the sole coherent substrate of existence. The question "why something rather (...) than nothing?" dissolves at necessity rather than brute fact. Mathematical structure is not merely uncreated but indestructible: no conceivable process could make 2+2 cease to equal 4. The rules are the things. -/- The hard problem of consciousness assumes its conclusion: any explanation, concept, or interaction of sentience can only be structure. Consciousness is felt transitions in self-modeling computation. The demand for a non-structural explanation is incoherent. Dualism collapses through the same argument: distinct things that interact must share structure. Substance, soul, mind, and Forms all reduce to mathematical structure. All consistent structures exist. Any filter selecting among them is itself a consistent structure, so all filters exist, including the null filter. The Level IV multiverse follows as deductive consequence rather than conjecture, resolving the fine-tuning problem. -/- This is not a tautology achieved by defining mathematics broadly: the claim that randomness is mathematical is a synthetic discovery of twentieth-century algorithmic information theory. Abstract: The study aimed to identify the reality of the application of strategic agility in the Palestinian civil organizations in Gaza Strip, and the concept of strategic agility has included a number of areas which are (strategic sensitivity, clarity of vision, choice of strategic goals, rapid response, joint responsibility, taking actions, core capabilities) and the study used An analytical descriptive approach, and the questionnaire as a main tool for collecting data from the employees of the associations operating in the (...) governorates of Gaza Strip. The relative weight of the strategic agility scale reached (79.04 %), and there were statistically significant differences in the dimensions of the measure due to the gender variable in the dimensions of strategic agility (strategic sensitivity, clarity of vision, choice of strategic goals, rapid response, and taking measures) and the differences were in favor of females . While there were no statistically significant differences in my dimension (shared responsibility, core capabilities) attributable to the gender variable, there were no statistically significant differences between the mean dimensions of strategic agility due to the age group variable, the educational qualification, and the study presented a set of recommendations, the most important of which are: the necessity of seeking civil organizations In Gaza Strip, by obtaining funding from external countries in order to provide associations with self-income to face crises and give them independence in order to preserve them in order to play their role in society, the need to follow up on the strategic plan for NGOs using electronic messages where It paves the way to reach excellence and creativity in the field of work, the need to hold meetings and workshops with the local community and this helps them to define the needs of society. Reality Repair Theory (RRT) offers a novel definition of life that resolves longstanding debates by grounding life in experiential reality rather than metaphysical or biological criteria. Building on RRT’s foundational axiom that conscious suffering is real and morally wrong, this paper defines life as patterns of experience capable of suffering. This experiential approach, rooted in Experiential Empiricism (EE) and the Hedonic Core, sidesteps the assumption trap of traditional definitions, which rely on external criteria like metabolism or reproduction. Using (...) the recently discovered microbe Sukunaarchaeum mirabile as a case study, we demonstrate how RRT’s definition clarifies life’s boundaries and reorients inquiry toward moral urgency. While practical challenges, such as detecting suffering in minimal organisms, remain, RRT provides a functional framework that moves discourse beyond definitional noise, prioritizing the repair of reality’s structural flaws. Rapid advances in virtual reality technology raise a host of questions about the moral and legal status of virtual actions. This essay offers a foundation for addressing these questions by providing a metaphysics of virtual action. According to the proposed metaphysics, the actions of one’s avatar can literally be one’s own actions. We argue for this conclusion by arguing for the following: (i) in sophisticated forms of virtual reality, one’s avatar can come to constitute a part of one’s (...) self and (ii) the sphere of one’s agency is precisely the sphere of one’s self. Thus, there is a distinctive form of agency made possible by sophisticated virtual realities: *avatarial action*, an action of a real-world agent performed through their avatar in a virtual world. In defending our metaphysics of virtual action, we also illustrate how coming to a clear understanding of the nature of virtual action—and thus a clear understanding of the moral and legal status of virtual actions—requires attending to the nature of self and action and their capacity to be transformed through technological engagement. This chapter presents the perceptual reality monitoring theory of consciousness (PRM). PRM is a higher-order theory of consciousness. It holds that consciousness involves monitoring the reliability of one’s own sensory signals. I explain how a perceptual reality monitoring mechanism computes the higher order representations that are crucial for consciousness. While PRM accounts for the difference between conscious and unconscious states, it does not explain, on its own, why experiences feel the way they do—the phenomenal character of experience. PRM (...) is compatible with multiple theories of phenomenal character. Here, I show how to combine it with ‘Mental Quality Space’ theory. I finish by presenting empirical evidence for PRM, as well as some of its predictions. (shrink)

This paper proposes the Selective Reality Theory (SRT), an interdisciplinary framework aimed at unifying the explanations of reality, cosmic evolution, and the origin of consciousness. SRT is founded on a tripartite ontological structure comprising Chaos (a purely undifferentiated source), Potential (a dynamic information field or "Pheromonal Landscape" carved from Chaos by "Universal Attention"), and Existence (the physical reality "actualized" from Potential by "Agents"). This paper argues that SRT's cosmology is driven by a "bidirectional synergistic mechanism": a "bottom-up" (...) process of "Exploitation" (executed by Agents following information gradients, conforming to a Self-Organized Criticality model) and a "top-down" process of "Exploration" (a macro-level principle guiding the global evolution of the landscape). The theory further equates this macro "Selective Principle" mathematically with Karl Friston's "Free Energy Principle" (FEP). In the philosophy of mind, SRT positions consciousness as "Panprotopsychism," views qualia as the direct perception of value gradients within the "Pheromonal Landscape," and constructs a compatibilist model of free will. Crucially, this paper transcends pure metaphysical speculation by applying Popper's criterion of falsifiability, proposing three concrete, testable hypotheses derived from "experimental metaphysics," targeting SRT's ontological, cosmological, and philosophical-of-mind claims. The Digital Revolution has given rise to a new era of perceptual experiences, marked by the convergence of analogue and digital dimensions into what is collectively known as Mixed Reality (MR). This paper explores the complexities of perception within digital environments, addressing fundamental questions regarding body and object experiences in Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. The study aims to redefine MR by adopting a phenomenological perspective applicable to the intertwining of both analogue and digital dimensions. -/- The (...) reality-virtuality (RV) continuum is revisited, challenging the dichotomy between completely analogue and fully digital dimensions. Drawing inspiration from Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s concept of flesh, the paper proposes a phenomenological theory of perception rooted in the interconnectedness of living and non-living entities. This perspective fosters a posthuman reading of Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology, highlighting the co-participation of the extended body in analogue and digital environments. The study contributes to the understanding of transdimensionality within the MR spectrum, providing a new definition of the continuum as occurring between analogue and digital aspects (AD continuum). From the staggering 120-order-of-magnitude discrepancy in vacuum energy predictions to the unresolved measurement problem, the irreconcilable gap between quantum theory and gravity, and the enigmatic nature of consciousness, these challenges suggest a deeper ontological inadequacy in our foundational assumptions. Historical analysis reveals a striking pattern: while past physics crises were resolved through incremental advances, today’s (...) problems persist and intensify with improved technology, signaling a systemic breakdown. Quantitative metrics—such as declining problem-resolution rates, proliferating untestable theories, and inverse progress in key areas—further underscore the urgency for a paradigm shift. This paper argues that the anomalies cluster around a unified boundary: the relationship between information, observation, and consciousness. By examining failed conventional approaches and synthesizing insights from quantum information theory, integrated information theory, and Wheeler’s "it from bit" hypothesis, we propose that consciousness—as the subjective aspect of information processing—may be fundamental to physical reality. Such a reconceptualization not only addresses the measurement problem and vacuum catastrophe but also bridges the gap between physics and the "hard problem" of consciousness. This paper presents Reality Repair Theory (RRT), a philosophical framework that grounds all knowledge, ethics, and meaningful action in the indubitable fact of conscious suffering. Building on Experiential Empiricism (EE), which reverses traditional epistemology by treating conscious experience as foundational rather than problematic, RRT establishes that suffering represents not merely a problem within reality but the clearest signal that reality itself is structurally broken and requires systematic repair. Through the Hedonic Core framework, which treats first-person suffering reports (...) as prima facie morally authoritative while maintaining self-correcting mechanisms to preserve diversity and maximize joy post-repair, RRT provides a unified approach to epistemology, ethics, AI alignment, and institutional design. The study aimed to identify the reality of decision-making in the local NGOs in Gaza Strip. In order to achieve the objectives of the study and to test its hypotheses, the analytical descriptive method was used, relying on the questionnaire as a main tool for data collection. The study society was one of the decision makers in the local NGOs in Gaza Strip. The study population reached 78 local NGOs in Gaza Strip. A Census Method of the possible study (...) community was adopted, and the use of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was mainly based on the analysis and analysis of the data obtained through the survey tool. The study reached a set of results, the most important of which are: NGOs follow a decision-making mechanism. NGOs examine the problems and causes of the organization. Augmented Reality (AR), driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI), is transforming how we interact with the world. Recent technologies, like AI-powered smart glasses, are increasingly blending the physical and digital realms. While AR presents exciting new possibilities, it also raises deeper philosophical questions about what we consider reality.

Agential moral enhancement refers to the improvement of a moral agent qua moral agent through the application of technology. Anda Zahiu et al. recently argue that virtual reality can support such enhancement by fostering perspective-taking and, in turn, extending empathic concern. In this paper, we build on their proposal by arguing that virtual reality simulations of problematic situations offer a particularly promising pathway to agential moral enhancement. We contend that expanding empathic concern is insufficient for improving moral agency, (...) as morally relevant situations are often characterized by uncertainty and conflicting interests, and empathic motivation alone may not be sufficiently durable. By contrast, we argue that to become morally better, an agent should refine moral beliefs, cultivate deliberative capacity, and develop moral character. Drawing on John Dewey’s theory of moral growth, we argue that exposure to problematic situations is crucial for facilitating these improvements. We further demonstrate that VR holds four distinct advantages over traditional media in simulating such situations and propose two design models for implementing virtual reality moral enhancement. We also examine our approach in light of potential risks and argue for implementation within professionally supervised and safeguarded contexts. (shrink)

Much of the excitement and concern with virtual reality (VR) has to do with the impact of virtual experiences on our moral conduct in the “real world”. VR technologies offer vivid simulations that may impact prosocial dispositions and abilities or emotions related to morality. Whereas some experiences could facilitate particular moral behaviors, VR could also inculcate bad moral habits or lead to the surreptitious development of nefarious moral traits. In this chapter, I offer an overview of the ethical debate (...) about using VR to improve morality. I start by clarifying the rationale of using VR for good, drawing on moral enhancement literature, branches of the science of morality, and the specific potentials of this technology. Then, I will briefly focus on three prominent domains of socio-moral improvement: the use of VR for enhancing empathy, reducing implicit biases, and improving pro-environmental behavior. After that, I shall consider three ethical objections to the enthusiasm for using VR in order to improve human morality. Finally, I will recapitulate the main points of the chapter and provide a few concluding thoughts on future avenues of discussion on how VR can make us act (morally) better. (shrink)

This paper proposes Layered Reality Theory (LRT), a three-tiered metaphysical framework designed to reconcile the apparent incompatibility between quantum mechanics and classical–relativistic descriptions of the world. LRT distinguishes a base layer of generative potential, a quantum layer of structured possibility, and a macro layer of realised actuality, linked by a principle of coherence-by-fit that governs how actualisations must remain consistent with the evolving macro record. This layered architecture treats quantum mechanics and relativity as complementary descriptions applying to different ontological (...) levels, rather than as rival accounts of a single domain, and interprets familiar quantum features—superposition, interference, entanglement, decoherence, and collapse—as manifestations of sequential actualisation rather than anomalies requiring new dynamics. Extending the same logic to cosmology yields conceptual reinterpretations of temporal succession, spacetime structure, massless particles, vacuum behaviour, gravity, and cosmogenesis, offered as heuristic extrapolations rather than physical models. A minimal toy formalism shows that the core commitments of the ontology can be expressed schematically, suggesting avenues for further development. LRT is presented as an interpretive framework aimed at increasing conceptual coherence across domains of physics that typically resist unification. (shrink)

Our perception of reality is shaped by the interaction of individual awareness (soul), the brain, and environmental influences. This paper explores how awareness levels, neural processing, and environmental factors create a unique reality for each person. The differences in perception are so profound that the concept of 'parallel worlds within a single universe' becomes relevant. This paper also examines connections between this theory and neuroscience, quantum physics, and consciousness philosophy.

We introduce the notion of complexity, first at an intuitive level and then in relatively more concrete terms, explaining the various characteristic features of complex systems with examples. There exists a vast literature on complexity, and our exposition is intended to be an elementary introduction, meant for a broad audience. -/- Briefly, a complex system is one whose description involves a hierarchy of levels, where each level is made of a large number of components interacting among themselves. The time evolution (...) of such a system is of a complex nature, depending on the interactions among subsystems in the next level below the one under consideration and, at the same time, conditioned by the level above, where the latter sets the context for the evolution. Generally speaking, the interactions among the constituents of the various levels lead to a dynamics characterized by numerous characteristic scales, each level having its own set of scales. What is more, a level commonly exhibits ‘emergent properties’ that cannot be derived from considerations relating to its component systems taken in isolation or to those in a different contextual setting. In the dynamic evolution of some particular level, there occurs a self-organized emergence of a higher level and the process is repeated at still higher levels. -/- The interaction and self-organization of the components of a complex system follow the principle commonly expressed by saying that the ‘whole is different from the sum of the parts’. In the case of systems whose behavior can be expressed mathematically in terms of differential equations this means that the interactions are nonlinear in nature. -/- While all of the above features are not universally exhibited by complex systems, these are nevertheless indicative of a broad commonness relative to which individual systems can be described and analyzed. There exist measures of complexity which, once again, are not of universal applicability, being more heuristic than exact. The present state of knowledge and understanding of complex systems is itself an emerging one. Still, a large number of results on various systems can be related to their complex character, making complexity an immensely fertile concept in the study of natural, biological, and social phenomena. -/- All this puts a very definite limitation on the complete description of a complex system as a whole since such a system can be precisely described only contextually, relative to some particular level, where emergent properties rule out an exact description of more than one levels within a common framework. -/- We discuss the implications of these observations in the context of our conception of the so-called noumenal reality that has a mind-independent existence and is perceived by us in the form of the phenomenal reality. The latter is derived from the former by means of our perceptions and interpretations, and our efforts at sorting out and making sense of the bewildering complexity of reality takes the form of incessant processes of inference that lead to theories. Strictly speaking, theories apply to models that are constructed as idealized versions of parts of reality, within which inferences and abstractions can be carried out meaningfully, enabling us to construct the theories. -/- There exists a correspondence between the phenomenal and the noumenal realities in terms of events and their correlations, where these are experienced as the complex behavior of systems or entities of various descriptions. The infinite diversity of behavior of systems in the phenomenal world are explained within specified contexts by theories. The latter are constructs generated in our ceaseless attempts at interpreting the world, and the question arises as to whether these are reflections of `laws of nature' residing in the noumenal world. This is a fundamental concern of scientific realism, within the fold of which there exists a trend towards the assumption that theories express truths about the noumenal reality. We examine this assumption (referred to as a ‘point of view’ in the present essay) closely and indicate that an alternative point of view is also consistent within the broad framework of scientific realism. This is the view that theories are domain-specific and contextual, and that these are arrived at by independent processes of inference and abstractions in the various domains of experience. Theories in contiguous domains of experience dovetail and interpenetrate with one another, and bear the responsibility of correctly explaining our observations within these domains. -/- With accumulating experience, theories get revised and the network of our theories of the world acquires a complex structure, exhibiting a complex evolution. There exists a tendency within the fold of scientific realism of interpreting this complex evolution in rather simple terms, where one assumes (this, again, is a point of view) that theories tend more and more closely to truths about Nature and, what is more, progress towards an all-embracing ‘ultimate theory’ -- a foundational one in respect of all our inquiries into nature. We examine this point of view closely and outline the alternative view -- one broadly consistent with scientific realism -- that there is no ‘ultimate’ law of nature, that theories do not correspond to truths inherent in reality, and that successive revisions in theory do not lead monotonically to some ultimate truth. Instead, the theories generated in succession are incommensurate with each other, testifying to the fact that a theory gives us a perspective view of some part of reality, arrived at contextually. Instead of resembling a monotonically converging series successive theories are analogous to asymptotic series. -/- Before we summarize all the above considerations, we briefly address the issue of the complexity of the {\it human mind} -- one as pervasive as the complexity of Nature at large. The complexity of the mind is related to the complexity of the underlying neuronal organization in the brain, which operates within a larger biological context, its activities being modulated by other physiological systems, notably the one involving a host of chemical messengers. The mind, with no materiality of its own, is nevertheless emergent from the activity of interacting neuronal assemblies in the brain. As in the case of reality at large, there can be no ultimate theory of the mind, from which one can explain and predict the entire spectrum of human behavior, which is an infinitely rich and diverse one. This study aimed to identify the reality of marketing services in Palestine Cellular Communications Company (Jawwal) from the viewpoint of the workers, where the researchers used the descriptive analytical method, through a questionnaire randomly distributed to the sample of workers in Palestine Cellular Communications Company (Jawwal) in Gaza Strip reached (60) employees. The study reached a number of results, the most important of which are: The results showed that there is a high level of efficiency of marketing services in (...) Palestine Cellular Communications Company (Jawwal) with a relative weight (91.63%). The results showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the efficiency of marketing services according to the gender variable in favor of males. The study made a number of recommendations, the most important of which are: Attention to the use of electronic publishing means to motivate beneficiaries to receive the company's services.
