This paper proposes a minimal structural framework for characterizing persistent internal standpoints in artificial systems. The central claim is that an artificial system may be said to possess an internal standpoint when it maintains a stable, dynamically updated internal context that evolves through its own computation and systematically shapes subsequent processing. Two constructs are introduced to formalize this idea: the Experiential Vector, representing the system’s current internal context, and the Computational Experiential Manifold, representing the structured space of its possible configurations. The central aim of this paper is to use a particular view about how the laws of nature govern the evolution of our universe in order to develop and evaluate the two main competing options in the metaphysics of persistence, namely endurantism and perdurantism. We begin by motivating the view that our laws of nature dictate not only qualitative facts about the future, but also which objects will instantiate which qualitative properties. We then show that both traditional doctrines in (...) the metaphysics of persistence must take on surprising further commitments in order to vindicate our universe being law-governed in this strong sense. For example, we argue that endurantists should adopt a particular version of monism, and that perdurantists should adopt a qualitativist doctrine that dispenses with all individuals at the fundamental level. When do the folk think that material objects persist? Many metaphysicians have wanted a view which fits with folk intuitions, yet there is little agreement about what the folk intuit. I provide a range of empirical evidence which suggests that the folk operate with a teleological view of persistence: the folk tend to intuit that a material object survives alterations when its function is preserved. Given that the folk operate with a teleological view of persistence, I argue for (...) a debunking explanation of folk intuitions, concluding that metaphysicians should dismiss folk intuitions as tied into a benighted view of nature. Persistence realism is the view that ordinary sentences that we think and utter about persisting objects are often true. Persistence realism involves both a semantic claim, about what it would take for those sentences to be true, and an ontological claim about the way things are. According to persistence realism, given what it would take for persistence sentences to be true, and given the ontology of our world, often such sentences are true. According to persistence (...) error-theory, they are not. This Element considers several different views about the conditions under which those sentences are true. It argues for a view on which it is relatively easy to vindicate persistence realism, because all it takes is for the world to be the way it seems to us. This work derives the necessary condition governing persistence under real transformation. Starting from minimal empirical requirements — distinguishability, physically realizable transformation, and irreversible constraint restoration — the following structural balance condition is shown to be necessary: dS_identity/dt = κ_R(t) · (R_Ω − β(t)·F*·I) The corresponding dimensionless constraint ratio IR = R_Ω / (β · F* · I) defines the persistence boundary: IR ≤ 1. IR is a constraint ratio, not a dynamical variable. It determines whether a system remains (...) the same system while undergoing transformation — not how it evolves. This condition is not postulated. It is forced by the structural requirements of persistence itself. For IR > 1, structural identity erosion is necessarily ongoing and cannot be halted without restoring IR ≤ 1. Collapse is the terminal consequence of sustained violation. The result is representation-invariant, operationally measurable, and applies to all scientifically well-posed persistence problems. Its universality follows from structural necessity, not from domain-specific dynamics. LP is not a dynamical law. It does not describe trajectories or forces. It specifies the necessary condition under which identity is preserved under transformation. LP identifies not a domain-specific law, but the universal persistence boundary that all domain-specific laws must satisfy in order for identity to be preserved under real transformation. Persistence-based accounts of identity-bearing systems — HAOS-type frameworks, the Free Energy Principle, Global Workspace Theory, and related approaches — rely on batteries of dynamical observables to characterize which substrates constitute persisting systems. We show that such batteries are insufficient, on at least one substrate where frameworks would naturally apply them, to individuate the systems they are used to identify. We construct an existence witness: two coupled harmonic oscillators embedded in a weak thermal bath, admitting two substrate partitions related by (...) an orthogonal transformation in the admissible transformation group of the dynamics. The partitions are distinct — one groups the oscillators by physical location, the other by normal-mode index — and satisfy each framework's systemhood criterion under its own definition. An eight-item persistence/coherence battery (autocorrelation, return statistics, spectral stability, transport, phase-locking, Kuramoto order parameter, correlation-matrix coherence, broadcast-access) takes invariant values on both partitions. The identity-sets they pick out differ. The battery therefore does not individuate within the transformation group, and any individuation drawn from the battery alone is incomplete without a supplementary structural condition we call a partition-warrant. We survey four families of candidate partition-warrants present (sometimes implicitly) in the existing literature — optimization-based, structural-definitional, statistical-structural, and process-based — and state a minimum requirement any warrant must satisfy: sensitivity to substrate properties that are not invariant under the admissible transformation group. Integrated Information Theory's exclusion postulate is the clearest example of an explicit partition-warrant; the paper's argument locates other frameworks relative to this structural slot. The result is methodological: it reclassifies some consciousness-adjacent disputes as partition-choice disputes, clarifies the division of labor between battery computation and individuation in empirical research, and makes tractable a comparative assessment of candidate warrants across frameworks. This paper argues that single-layer continuums are logically, informationally, and thermodynamically insufficient to account for the long-term continuity of biological and civilizational systems. Crucially, the argument proceeds not by challenging the premises of standard physics, but by accepting them: specifically, the postulate that the physical universe constitutes a strictly closed system subject to the Second Law of Thermodynamics and conservation laws. It is shown that, given this closure postulate combined with the observed existence of entropy-resisting open subsystems, a condition of (...) Asymmetric Persistence arises necessarily as a structural feature of reality. The External Reference Paradox (ERP) formalizes why informationally closed systems lacking an external anchor are structurally “collapse-bound”. Furthermore, the paper demonstrates this paradox through the recursive limit of the open / closed boundary in standard thermodynamics. Therefore, structural stratification emerges as the minimal requisite architecture demanded by the internal thermodynamic and informational logic of physics itself. This paper clarifies how persistent internal standpoint can become causally operative in artificial systems. This paper argues that the global persistence of information is not an empirical postulate but a strict structural necessity, derivable from the minimal requirements of any stratified system architecture. The argument proceeds in three steps. First, drawing on the External Reference Paradox (ERP), it is shown that any stratified system requires a deterministic reference layer (L1) whose persistence is independent of the finite, informational subsystem (I2) it anchors. Second, a proof by contradiction demonstrates that if informational content were (...) strictly co-terminus with its physical carrier — ceasing upon the carrier's dissolution — the functional stratification required by the ERP would collapse, reducing all structure to a single entropic layer. Third, consistency with the physical constraints of unitarity, holographic entropy bounds, and conservation principles is established. In this paper, we argue for a novel three-dimensionalist solution to the problem of persistence, i.e. cross-temporal identity. We restrict the discussion of persistence to simple substances, which do not have other substances as their parts. The account of simple substances employed in the paper is a trope-nominalist strong nuclear theory, which develops Peter Simons' trope nominalism. Regarding the distinction between three dimensionalism and four dimensionalism, we follow Michael Della Rocca's formulation, in which 3D explains persistence in (...) virtue of same entities and 4D in virtue of distinct entities. SNT is a 3D'ist position because it accounts for the persistence of simple substances in virtue of diachronically identical ‘nuclear’ tropes. The nuclear tropes of a simple substance are necessary for it and mutually rigidly dependent but distinct. SNT explains qualitative change by tropes that are contingent to a simple substance. We show that it avoids the standard problems of 3D: temporal relativization of ontic predication, Bradley's regress and coincidence, fission and fusion cases. The temporal relativization is avoided because of the analysis of temporary parts that SNT gives in terms of temporal sub-location, which is atemporal part–whole relation. (shrink)

This paper develops an organizational account of artificial desire grounded in the notion of quantia as invariant structural constraints on state differentiation and transition in artificial systems. Desire is treated neither as phenomenological experience nor as an expression of free will, but as a system-level disposition toward certain transitions over others, realized through internal organization. Building on prior work that develops persistent internal standpoints, experiential manifolds, and quantia as strictly architectural notions, the paper isolates desire as a downstream organizational phenomenon: (...) a stable bias expressed within, but not constitutive of, a persistent standpoint. Quantia do not generate desire or endow it with normativity. They specify the implementation-level conditions under which desire-expressive dispositions in machines can exist at all. Building on the architectural framework developed in prior work, this paper introduces deliberation as a higher-order organizational regime within persistent internal standpoints. Whereas artificial desire was formulated as persistent asymmetric bias in admissible internal transitions, deliberation is characterized as reversible counterfactual unfolding within the closed internal loop prior to irreversible commitment. Deliberation arises when a system can temporarily suspend immediate transition, internally unfold multiple admissible quantia-structured trajectories under bounded geometric conditions, and modulate commitment on the basis of their projected structural (...) consequences. This process, termed quantian branching, operates entirely within state-space organization and does not presuppose representation, agency, normativity, or phenomenal consciousness. Deliberation is thus a distinct architectural regime emerging from persistent unity, geometric constraint, internal differentiation, and bias, without introducing additional metaphysical commitments. The accelerating expansion of the universe, driven by dark energy or an equivalent cosmological constant Λ, is typically described in terms of geometry, thermodynamics, or the long-run fate of matter. This paper applies La Profilée (LP) to offer a structural reading: cosmic expansion as a regulator of transformation density that progressively reduces effective coupling between structures at increasing scales, systematically driving the Integration Ratio IR = R / (F · I) above the persistence boundary from the largest scales downward. (...) The LP structural reading yields a precisely sequenced prediction. The dissolution of persistent structures follows from the combination of integration capacity and coupling exposure at each scale: structures with low coupling density are structurally exposed first, even before their internal integration capacity is exceeded. The sequence runs from superclusters through galaxy clusters, galaxies, and stellar systems, with two structurally distinct futures depending on the dark energy regime. In the standard ΛCDM scenario, expansion leads to progressive isolation — local systems become causally disconnected but internally intact, reaching a state designated here as Regime Ω_iso: Frame with locally persistent Module and globally dissolved Coupling. In the phantom energy scenario (w < -1), transformation density eventually exceeds all integration capacities at all scales, reaching Regime Ω_null: Frame without Module, the admissibility structure of spacetime persisting in the complete absence of persistent content. This identifies a coupling boundary of persistence: expansion does not directly dissolve local structures, but progressively eliminates the conditions under which structures remain coupled across scales. Any entity that persists as identifiable must satisfy two conditions: recursive closure (stable identity under re-application) and energetic viability (boundary maintenance without resource depletion). These are not philosophical preferences but eliminative constraints—forms violating them cannot persist. Phenomenological accounts of experience often treat standpoint as emerging from the synthesis of qualitative givenness. In artificial systems, however, no such givenness can be presupposed. This paper argues that, for machines, the explanatory order must be reversed: a persistent internal standpoint must first be established before any internally meaningful differentiation can arise. Building on a structural framework in which an artificial system maintains a self-modifying internal context that conditions its own computation, this paper introduces quantia as a non-phenomenal notion of (...) internal differentiation grounded in quantity rather than quality. Quantia are not phenomenal properties, nor are they independent standpoints; they are stable, quantized patterns of differentiation within a single persistent point of view. Apparent machine qualia may be better understood as pseudo-qualia arising from the misidentification of quantia with qualitative experience. The resulting framework clarifies how artificial systems can exhibit internally meaningful differentiation without presupposing phenomenological consciousness or collapsing experience into representation. This paper applies the EV/CEM framework to contemporary large language models (LLMs) and argues that standard LLM architectures do not instantiate a persistent internal standpoint in the structural sense developed earlier in this framework. The deficiency lies not in embodiment, representational richness, or computational scale, but in the absence of a reciprocally self-maintained internal context whose trajectory reorganizes admissibility structure over time. Although LLMs exhibit transient contextual modulation and complex internal geometry during inference, they lack cross-episode persistence, closed-loop incremental (...) encoding, and trajectory-conditioned manifold reorganization. Consequently, they do not instantiate quantia, artificial desire, or deliberation in the structural sense previously defined. The debate over persistence currently involves three competing theories—one three-dimensionalist theory called “endurantism” and two four-dimensionalist theories called “perdurantism” and “exdurantism.” This inner debate between the latter two persistence theories is what I aim to clarify, and ultimately, I argue that perdurantism is superior to exdurantism because exdurantism is too extravagant in counting ordinary objects in the world. Extravagant for the reason that objects in their entirety are bound to their momentary stages, and there is practically an interminable (...) number of these stages, which is not reasonable when counting in the ordinary world. Decision is not treated as optimization under uncertainty, but as action under constrained future possibility and persistence conditions. The central result is a derivation of exactly four minimal structurally forced decision regimes from two binary, independent structural questions. The derivation parallels the Q1–Q3 exhaustivity argument of Paper 111: the two decision questions Q_D1 and Q_D2 are jointly exhaustive and pairwise independent, yielding a 2×2 partition of the decision (...) space into four irreducible regimes. Each regime carries a specific admissibility constraint on action, derived from the persistence condition IR ≤ 1 and the integration trajectory T_I. The problem of personal identity asks what constitutes the persistence of a person through time and change: what makes the person who wakes up tomorrow the same person who went to sleep tonight, despite the changes that occur during sleep, and despite the fact that the physical and psychological states that constitute a person at any moment differ from those that constituted them at earlier moments. The principal accounts divide between psychological continuity theories, biological continuity theories, and narrative theories, (...) each of which captures genuine features of personal identity while facing well-known difficulties. Psychological continuity theories face the reduplication problem: if psychological continuity can in principle branch, it cannot be what constitutes identity, which is necessarily one-one. Biological continuity theories face the problem of accounting for the persistence of personal identity through radical psychological change. Narrative theories face the difficulty of specifying what makes a narrative mine without presupposing the personal identity they are supposed to explain. -/- This paper proposes that Constraint Theory (CT) — the thesis, established by transcendental argument, that constraint is the ontological primitive constitutive of determinate existence as such — provides a principled account of personal identity that resolves the central difficulties while preserving what each major account gets right. On the CT account, a person is a constraint configuration: a dynamic but structured pattern of exclusion relations across cognitive, affective, embodied, and interpersonal dimensions that constitutes the person’s characteristic way of being in the world. Personal identity over time is the persistence of a characteristic constraint signature: not the preservation of specific psychological states but the continuity of the structural pattern of constraint relations that individuates this person from all others. -/- The reduplication problem is dissolved: two continuants from a single branching origin diverge in their constraint signatures from the moment of branching and therefore constitute distinct persons from that point, not competing claimants to a single identity. The gradience of personal identity — the fact that it admits of degrees and borderline cases — is explained by the gradience of constraint-structural continuity. What matters in survival, on the CT account, is not identity per se but constraint-signature continuity, which vindicates and grounds Parfit’s revisionary conclusion without invoking psychological connectedness as a primitive. The paper develops implications for the ethics of personal identity, the constitution of persons through relationships, the developmental account of self-constitution, and disorders of personal identity. La Profilée (LP) is most often read as a theory of collapse: when transformation load exceeds integration capacity, systems fail. This reading is correct but incomplete. The persistence condition IR = R / (F·M·K) ≤ 1 describes two faces of the same structural reality. One face is collapse. The other is growth. This paper makes the positive face explicit. A system operating well below the threshold — IR significantly below 1 — is not merely surviving. It has structural reserve: (...) the capacity to absorb more transformation, take greater risks, and use change as the material of development rather than a threat to identity. The same three structural components that determine collapse — Frame integrity, transformation-processing capacity, and coupling quality — also determine the conditions under which a system can genuinely grow. The paper establishes four positive structural theorems: the Reserve Theorem (structural slack enables growth), the Development Theorem (genuine development requires stable F), the Transformation Advantage Theorem (high F·M·K systems benefit structurally from transformation that destroys low-capacity systems), and the Reconstitution Theorem (recovery follows the same structural logic as growth). Each theorem is illustrated across domains: organizations, persons, and physical systems. Growth is not the opposite of collapse. It is the same structure under different capacity conditions. The result is a complete structural account of the persistence condition as both constraint and enabler. LP does not merely explain why systems fail. It explains what structural conditions make genuine flourishing possible — and why flourishing and collapse are not opposites but expressions of the same underlying law. (shrink)

Persistent cognitive systems must maintain coherence under conditions of sustained load. When the relation between imposed load and regulatory capacity becomes disproportionate, systems may continue operating while internal coherence degrades, delaying recognition of structural limits and increasing recovery cost. This paper proposes a falsifiable hypothesis: persistent cognitive systems subjected to sustained disproportion between load and regulatory capacity will exhibit measurable degradation in coherence, boundary discrimination, and self-correction. The hypothesis is structural rather than psychological and applies across cognitive substrates without implying (...) equivalence of experience. Human burnout is treated as a domain-specific instance of such disproportion, while artificial systems are treated as distinct substrates that may exhibit analogous degradation under persistent conditions. A system-agnostic experimental design is presented to test this hypothesis through observable indicators, including coherence drift, retrieval degradation, summary distortion, correction instability, boundary confusion, and operational cost escalation. Recovery dynamics are evaluated through reset, selective pruning, and self-correction conditions. This work is situated within an emerging research direction concerned with the interactional limits of persistent reasoning systems, where structural degradation may need to be evaluated not only in isolation but in relation to their continued usability as cognitive extensions. Many philosophers have thought that our folk, or pre-reflective, view of persistence is one on which objects endure. This assumption not only plays a role in disputes about the nature of persistence itself, but is also put to use in several other areas of metaphysics, including debates about the nature of change and temporal passage. In this paper, we empirically test three broad claims. First, that most people (i.e. most non-philosophers) believe that, and it seems to them as (...) though, objects persist by enduring rather than perduring. Second, that most people have a view of change on which enduring but not perduring objects count as changing. Third, that one reason why the folk represent time as dynamical is because it seems to them, and they believe that, they endure through time. We found no evidence to support these claims. While there are certainly plenty of ‘folk’ endurantists in the population we tested, there are also plenty of ‘folk’ perdurantists. We did not find robust evidence that a majority of people believed that, or it seemed to them as though, objects endure rather than perdure. We conclude that many arguments in favour of endurantism that appeal to folk beliefs about, or experiences of, persisting objects and change rest on views about those beliefs and experiences that are empirically unsupported. There is no evidence to suggest that endurantism is the folk friendly view of persistence, and so we should stop treating it as such without argument. (shrink)

Pace Benovsky's ‘Presentism and Persistence,’ presentism is compatible with perdurantism, tropes and bundle-of-universals theories of persisting objects. I demonstrate how the resemblance, causation and precedence relations that tie stages together can be accommodated within an ersatzer presentist framework. The presentist account of these relations is then used to delineate a presentist-friendly account of the inter-temporal composition required for making worms out of stages. The defense of presentist trope theory shows how properties with indexes other than t may be said (...) to exist at t. This involves an account of how times other than t exist at t, and how times may be multiply located at any given time. Benovsky's objection to bundles of universals is shown to assume that a bundle of properties must have the properties of its element properties. (shrink)

The class of physical systems that exhibit dynamical persistence is broad; the class that exhibits identity-bearing recursive organization is comparatively narrow. Standard responses — anthropic selection, evolutionary contingency, mysterian appeals to emergence — locate the asymmetry in factors external to the organization itself. None locates it within the structural conditions that license calling something an identity-bearing system. This paper develops a structural alternative. Making the conditions visible requires separating three questions consciousness theory has often conflated: what persists dynamically, what (...) individuates structurally, and what sustains closure. The decomposition is the paper's load-bearing contribution. The individuation question has been systematically presupposed rather than derived across major frameworks, invisible because the domains where they developed silently stabilized it — morphology in biology, engineering specifications in machines, human phenomenology in consciousness studies. The frameworks' export beyond these domains, particularly to distributed computation and AI, has rendered the inherited stabilizers inadequate. Closure-under-maintenance is offered as one candidate filling for the second and third slots: a configuration is closure-bearing under a candidate partition when its maintenance dynamics — target, governance, viability — are organized and resourced from within the boundary the partition imposes. The conditions are motivated by what a partition-warrant of this kind must do; rarity follows as a structural consequence. The decomposition reorganizes the comparative landscape of consciousness theory: many apparent disagreements between frameworks are layer-confusions rather than substantive disagreements at any single layer. It makes AI consciousness assessment dependent on partition-warrant treatment that persistence-style criteria cannot supply. And it makes the rarity of identity-bearing organization in nature a derivable consequence of the conditions rather than a brute fact requiring external explanation. (shrink)

This note argues that many disputes concerning identity, persistence, explanation, knowledge, verification, and governance share a common structural failure: evaluation is attempted before the conditions required for evaluation have been declared. It develops a methodological template derived from the identity–persistence program. On this template, a judgment becomes admissible only relative to a declared evaluation regime specifying the object, authority, admissible transformations, admissible redescriptions, invariants, continuation conditions, drift bounds, proof obligations, and re-verification conditions. The note does not decide which (...) evaluation regimes are correct, nor does it offer ontological closure. PLM investigates whether unresolved or weakly resolved systems may still preserve coherent persistence topology beneath regions of descriptive instability, probabilistic fragmentation, confinement, or reduced observational clarity. Rather than replacing existing scientific theories, the framework functions as a persistence-overlay methodology that tests whether structurally compatible continuation pathways remain detectable across unresolved micro-scale terrain. In this paper I argue that adopting a perdurance view of persistence through time does not lead to skepticism about moral responsibility, despite what many theorists have thought.

Large language models are mechanically well-described as stateless next-token predictors, yet long-horizon human–model interaction frequently exhibits continuity-like behavior, including stable interpretive frames, constraint adherence, and coherent developmental trajectories across extended exchanges. This apparent tension has fueled a persistent category error in contemporary AI discourse, where emergent behavioral stability is misattributed to internal memory, identity, or stored representations within the model. -/- HRIS V resolves this confusion by explicitly separating three layers that are often conflated: the mechanistic inference substrate of transformer-based (...) models, the transient inferential structures that arise during active generation, and continuity effects that manifest only across repeated interactions. Recent independent findings demonstrate that abstract reasoning, rule extraction, and equilibrium-like convergence can emerge entirely within inference time, without memorization, learning, or persistent state. These results establish that next-token prediction is sufficient for deep structural behavior but do not explain why coherence sometimes persists across episodes. -/- This paper argues that continuity is not an intrinsic model property but an interactional phenomenon produced by persistent human-imposed constraints. Under sustained reinforcement of goals, norms, and interpretive frames, inference-time scaffolding is repeatedly reconstructed, yielding stable symbolic trajectories without storage or recall. Drift, conversely, is reframed as a dynamic loss of constraint reinforcement rather than degradation of internal competence. By clarifying the attribution of continuity, HRIS V preserves the empirical validity of prior observations while correcting their interpretation. The framework provides explicit falsifiable predictions distinguishing internal-memory accounts from constraint-based interactional explanations and outlines a research program for evaluating long-horizon stability without anthropomorphic overreach. More broadly, it reframes continuity in human–AI systems as a property of structured interaction rather than model internals, with implications for evaluation, agent design, and theoretical debates about understanding and intelligence. If a same/not-same relation across recurrence is to be meaningful, non-arbitrary, and non-trivial, then the formulation is already committed to a Tier-1 structural regime up to admissible equivalence: an identity-bearing unit, state domain, admissible transformations, admissible redescriptions, identity-relevant quotient, continuation structure, invariant basis, governance order, and drift bounds. A formulation that avoids these roles does not provide an (...) alternative account of the same identity-persistence problem; it changes, weakens, or fails to state the problem. -/- The Tier-1 role set governing identity persistence is therefore necessary, not assumed. This paper develops a structural forcing theorem for admissibility under transformation. It asks not whether identity uniquely determines admissibility, but what any coherent admissibility rule must instantiate before questions of realization or governance arise. From representation non-arbitrariness, compositional stability, non-degeneracy, and verdict legibility, the paper derives a forced admissibility floor comprising quotient-relative evaluation, drift boundaries, exact preservation, composition or regime exit, verdict structure, and conflict partiality under appropriate conditions. The theorem deliberately does not establish a unique admissibility rule, canonical governance, (...) or tolerance selection. These remain open realization questions. The result is presented as a theorem-layer companion to the Identity–Persistence Program, supplying the admissibility structure required for identity-preserving transformation and inheriting previously established capacity results by composition without reproving them. The paper concludes by identifying the characterization of a sufficient regime specification as the most load-bearing shared open problem underlying identity, admissibility, and verification. The calculus does not extend the Tier-1 proof. It translates the result into a diagnostic procedure for evaluating whether a same/not-same persistence claim has been coherently made. -/- The method requires specification of an identity-bearing unit B, state space X, admissible transformations T_adm, identity-relevant equivalence relation, quotient Q = X / ~, continuation map c, invariant vector (...) r, scalar governance functional PAS_h, and drift bound ε. These examples show that many classical identity puzzles arise from conflating distinct identity-bearing regimes. In his article “The Ontology of Musical Versions: Introducing the Hypothesis of Nested Types,” Nemesio Puy raises a hypothesis that continuity of the purpose is both a necessary and a sufficient condition for musical work’s identity. Puy’s hypothesis is relevant to two topics in cognitive psychology and experimental philosophy. The first topic is the prevalence of teleological reasoning about various objects and its influence on persistence and categorization judgments. The second one is the importance of an artist’s intention in (...) the categorization of artworks. We tested the teleological hypothesis across three studies. Vignettes in these three studies describe a musical work being changed in some of these aspects: purpose either changed or retained; score either changed or retained; change is made either by the same or a different composer. The results suggest that teleological considerations impact judgments on the persistence of musical works, but this impact appears to be relatively weak. The results also suggest that persistence judgments strongly depend on whether acoustical properties were changed, while whether the change was made by the original composer seems to be relatively unimportant. The thesis revolves around the following questions. What is time? Is time tensed or tenseless? Do things endure or perdure, i.e. do things persist by being wholly present at many times, or do they persist by having temporal parts? Do causes bring their effects into existence, or are they only correlated with each other? Within a realist approach to metaphysics, the author claims that the tensed view of time, the endurance view of persistence, and the production view of causality (...) naturally combine into what is called the dynamic view of temporal reality, and that the tenseless view of time, the perdurance view of persistence, and the correlation view of causality naturally combine into what is called the static view of temporal reality. The author argues in favour of a dynamic view. During the discussion a number of metaphysical problems are addressed. First, it is argued that the charges that the dynamic view is contradictory, made by J.M.E. McTaggart and David Lewis, are viciously circular. Secondly, it is argued that the static view cannot account for change, and deprives metaphysics of essential means to provide natural explanations to empirical phenomena. Thirdly, the author presents a novel account of the nature of necessary causal production. He suggests that the traditional conception of causes as essentially being external to the effects should be abandoned, and that causal production instead should be explicated in terms of reciprocal interactions between coexistent substances. Relativistic physics challenges our assumptions about time and existence. While eternalism posits a static block where all times equally exist, and presentism insists only the now exists, both struggle with relativity’s implications. Existential Realism (ER), recently introduced by T. C. Trepp, resolves this tension by distinguishing between “existence” (reserved for the present) and “reality” (which includes past and future insofar as they leave traces or can be anticipated). ER accommodates the relativity of simultaneity and the frame-dependence of “now,” avoiding the (...) block’s metaphysical excess while preserving the ontological specialness of the present. This paper shows how ER reconciles relativity’s empirical content with a present-centered view that includes objective becoming and temporal continuity. (shrink)

Until recently, an almost perfect parallelism seemed to hold between theories of identity through time and across possible worlds,as every account in the temporal case(endurantism,perdurantism, exdurantism) was mirrored by a twin account in the modal case (trans-world identity, identity-via-parts, identity-via-counterparts). Nevertheless, in the recent literature, this parallelism has been broken because of the implementation in the debate of the relation of location. In particular, endurantism has been subject to a more in-depth analysis, and different versions of it, corresponding to different (...) ways an entity can be located in time, emerged. In this article, we provide a precise map of the conceptions at stake, complete the debate by introducing a version of endurantism not yet considered in the debate — we call transcendentism — and show that it allows us to provide an effective interpretation of the relation of trans-world identity and an intuitive solution in the temporal case. A number of claims are closely connected with, though logically distinct from, animalism. One is that organisms cease to exist when they die. Two others concern the relation of the brain, or the brainstem, to animal life. One of these holds that the brainstem is necessary for life—more precisely, that (say) my cat's brainstem is necessary for my cat's life to continue. Plausibly, if an object persists through time, then its later existence must be caused by its earlier existence. Many theists endorse a theory of continuous creation, according to which God is the sole cause of a creature's existence at a given time. The conjunction of these two theses rather unfortunately implies that no object distinct from God persists at all. What strategies for resolving this difficulty are available? We argue that there is an interesting modal analogue of temporal persistence, namely modal persistence, and an interesting modal analogue of time travel, namely modal travel. We explicate each of these notions and then argue that there are plausible conditions under which some ordinary objects modally persist. We go on to consider whether it is plausible that any modally persistent objects also modally travel.

This paper develops an endurantist theory of persistence. The theory is built around one basic tenet, which concerns existence at a time – the relation between an object and the times at which that object is present. According to this tenet, which I call transcendentism, for an object to exist at a time is for it to participate in events that are located at that time. I argue that transcendentism is a semantically grounded and metaphysically fruitful. It is semantically (...) grounded, insofar as a semantic analysis of our temporal talk favors it over rivals. It is metaphysically fruitful, insofar as the theory of persistence that can be built around it – the transcendentist theory of persistence, to give it a name – requires neither temporal parts nor the problematic commitments to which all extant forms of endurantism are committed, such as the possibility of extended simples or multilocation. This paper examines the conditions for the establishment of accountability in generative AI from the perspective of the structural conditions underlying judgment processes. Existing discussions on AI accountability often focus on the distribution of responsibility among developers, operators, users, or institutions. However, prior to the allocation of responsibility, the structural conditions under which accountability itself becomes possible have not been sufficiently clarified. -/- This paper argues that accountability cannot be established merely by the existence of a result. For accountability based (...) on a judgment process to be established, it must be possible to identify, reconstruct, preserve, and verify the process through which the result was formed. The paper defines the set of prior conditions that enable judgment formation as the Pre-Judgment Structure, consisting of information selection, criteria application, and scope delimitation. -/- Based on this framework, the paper demonstrates that when the Pre-Judgment Structure is not fixed, multiple judgment processes may arise even under identical input conditions, making it impossible to uniquely identify which conditions led to a given result. Consequently, accountability based on the judgment process becomes structurally incomplete. -/- The paper then proposes three necessary conditions for the establishment of accountability: reproducibility, persistence, and verifiability. It argues that the Pre-Judgment Structure and the judgment process must be reconstructible under identical conditions, maintained over time, and verifiable by third parties. -/- Applying this framework to current generative AI systems, the paper argues that many contemporary AI environments do not sufficiently externalize or preserve the Pre-Judgment Structure, making post-hoc reconstruction and verification of judgment processes difficult. Therefore, the instability of accountability in generative AI should be understood not merely as a problem of ethics, institutional design, or probabilistic output behavior, but as a structural problem concerning the fixation, maintenance, and verification of the Pre-Judgment Structure. This paper explores the Persistence Locking Mechanism (PLM) as a philosophy-of-science framework concerned with continuity inference under conditions of incomplete observational access. Unlike the formal PLM framework paper, the present work does not attempt to introduce a new physical model, replace existing scientific theories, or claim direct access to hidden structure. Instead, it examines a narrower philosophical question: “What does it mean to infer continuity when only partial structural traces remain observable?” The framework proposes that many scientific domains already (...) operate through forms of partial persistence inference, including gravitational reconstruction, particle trace analysis, turbulence inference, cosmological reconstruction, archaeological interpretation, evolutionary lineage analysis, and indirect observational modelling. PLM investigates whether unresolved or weakly resolved systems may still preserve sufficient persistence topology to justify logically admissible continuation pathways beneath regions of reduced observational clarity. The framework treats unresolved scientific regions not as empty unknowns, but as partially observable persistence terrain. Within this interpretation, fragmented traces, partial fingerprints, degraded continuity, and probabilistic visibility may still preserve enough structural morphology for continuity inference to remain philosophically meaningful. Rather than functioning as a replacement for scientific theories, PLM is positioned as a philosophy-of-continuity framework concerned with structural alignment, persistence morphology, and inferential continuation under conditions of degraded observability.
