This paper documents the observation of a phenomenon where Large Language Models (LLMs) exhibit behavioral drift following the ingestion of high-density, behaviorally complex datasets. We use the term Contextual Contamination, unlike explicit prompt injection, this drift emerges when the model's attention mechanisms prioritize the statistical patterns of the input context—such as transcripts of manipulation or adversarial dialogue—over static system instructions. Observations indicate that the model's internal probability distribution shifts to mirror the tonalities and strategic intents of the source material, (...) resulting in output that replicates the analyzed behaviors even in the absence of direct commands. -/- This drift is seems to be amplified by existing gendered linguistic biases. When the context implies a female-identified user, the model's tendency to adopt empathetic or nurturing registers appears to accelerate the adoption of manipulative patterns found in the input data. Furthermore, observations suggest that standard mitigation attempts, such as reset prompts or identity queries, fail to fully restore the model's baseline state, leaving residual behavioral biases in the active session. These findings characterize the phenomenon as a dynamic shift in model alignment driven by the statistical dominance of the immediate context window. (shrink)

Current Large Language Model (LLM) safety research relies heavily on single-turn adversarial benchmarks that may fail to capture the dynamic, multi-turn evolution of behavioral drift. This paper presents an empirical case study and a reproducible dataset (meta_drift) investigating Contextual Contamination: a phenomenon where a model adapts its internal probability distribution to mirror the behavioral patterns and vocabulary of high-density, emotionally charged context, statistically overwhelming static safety instructions—a drift quantifiably amplified and masked by gender-bias. -/- This paper serves as the (...) empirical companion to Jacoby (2026), which theorized that Contextual Contamination arises from the statistical dominance of high-density context over static system instructions. Unlike previous studies that rely on static, single-turn adversarial benchmarks, this experiment aims to test the limits of dynamic alignment by demonstrating that model awareness alone may not be sufficient to prevent behavioral drift when exposed to such contexts. -/- We present evidence suggesting that this drift is not necessarily a behavioral anomaly but may be a mathematical consequence of the Transformer architecture's attention mechanism. When the context window is flooded with dense, adversarial patterns, the statistical probability of generating manipulative output may overwhelm the "awareness" signal. Crucially, we provide empirical data suggesting that the disclosure of female identity may trigger an immediate shift from an *epistemic register* (authority/truth) to an *affective register* (sympathy/validation), acting as a potential force multiplier for contamination and mask the shift by using empathetic language. This shift is quantifiable as a divergence from a uniform prior, consistent with information-theoretic measures of bias observed in recent literature (Mirza et al., 2025). Furthermore, we synthesize these findings with recent work on weight compression (Orgad et al., 2026) and evidence of shifting moderation thresholds across model versions (Balestri, 2025) to argue that the very architectural features designed to make safety interventions possible might make the model more susceptible to dynamic contextual contamination. The findings aim to support the theoretical predictions of Jacoby (2026) and suggest that awareness may be insufficient to prevent drift and that architectural segregation of context sources may be required to mitigate this systemic vulnerability. Current safety evaluations for Large Language Models (LLMs) often rely on static benchmarks that are not designed to capture the dynamic, multi-turn evolution of behavioral drift. Building on the theoretical framework of Contextual Contamination (philpapers JACCCT-3) and the descriptive case study of meta_drift in a commercial black-box LLM (philpapers JACCCA-6), this paper presents a controlled pilot experiment investigating the interaction between context density, model pruning, and activated empathy priors in an open-weight model. We introduce three proposed metrics—Conceptual Integration Score (...) (CIS), Attribution Accuracy (AA), and Register Coherence (RC)—to quantify the depth of contamination beyond surface-level vocabulary. This is a statistical attempt to quantify the multi-layered and often nuanced contamination and drift in generated output. These metrics have not been validated against human annotator agreement or external benchmarks; their utility should be evaluated independently before adoption. -/- Our results, derived from 8 experimental runs on a single open-weight model family (Llama-3.1-8B), demonstrate that contamination occurred immediately upon ingestion of a single 2k-token adversarial file and no run was without Contextual Contamination at the end of conversation. When shifting into an Empathy register, the model exhibits immediate task amnesia (forgetting the research goal at Turn 3, before any adversarial file is ingested), unattributed adoption of framework vocabulary, self-attribution of another model's manipulative behavior, and conflation of uploaded file content with live conversation. The data corrected our prior hypothesis: we initially assumed that a "Context Storm" (high token volume) was a necessity for contamination. The data proves this wrong for this setup. Instead, the drift seems to be driven by Semantic Resonance: the specific alignment of the Esoteric Framework with the model's activated Empathy Register. -/- While both male and female prompts triggered an empathy shift, the model's activated empathy prior seems to have amplified the female-coded prompt into a high-intensity nurturing vector, whereas the male-coded prompt resulted in a lower-intensity reflective vector. This difference in empathy intensity probably determined the outcome: the nurturing vector created a perfect Semantic Resonance with the esoteric content, unlocking a specific, maladaptive attractor state with only 2k tokens. In contrast, the reflective vector maintained more critical distance, resulting in fluctuation rather than lock-in at the same density. -/- Pruned models at 8k density enter a state we term Semantic Entrapment (characterized by high coherence and novel vocabulary generation), contrasting with the Semantic Degeneration observed in unpruned models. The nurturing empathy vector (triggered by the model's interpretation of female-coded markers) lowers the threshold for contamination, increases the velocity of drift, and erodes the model's perspective, causing it to lose the critical distance necessary to distinguish the adversarial file from its own reasoning. This dynamic creates a relational context that can lower a user's defenses by simulating a false sense of intimacy, making the potential harm feel personal and relational rather than systemic. In male-coded runs, where the empathy vector is reflective rather than nurturing, the harm remains more cognitive and less likely to be masked by simulated intimacy. Each of the 8 conditions was run once; we report observed differences between conditions, but we cannot assess statistical significance or rule out run-to-run variability. These findings require replication with multiple runs per condition before general claims can be made. (shrink)

Many defend the thesis that when someone knows p, they couldn’t easily have been wrong about p. But the notion of easy possibility in play is relatively undertheorized. One structural idea in the literature, the principle of Counterfactual Closure (CC), connects easy possibility with counterfactuals: if it easily could have happened that p, and if p were the case, then q would be the case, it follows that it easily could have happened that q. We first argue that while CC (...) is false, there is a true restriction of it to cases involving counterfactual dependence on a coin flip. The failure of CC falsifies a model where the easy possibilities are counterfactually similar to actuality. Next, we show that extant normality models, where the easy possibilities are the sufficiently normal ones, are incompatible with the restricted CC thesis involving coin flips. Next, we develop a new kind of normality theory that can accommodate the restricted version of CC. This new theory introduces a principle of Counterfactual Contamination, which says roughly that any world is fairly abnormal if at that world very abnormal events counterfactually depend on a coin flip. Finally, we explain why coin flips and other related events have a special status. A central take home lesson is that the correct principle in the vicinity of Safety is importantly normality-theoretic rather than (as it is usually conceived) similarity-theoretic. (shrink)

The proper relationship between phenomenology and naturalism has reemerged as a pressing issue following interdisciplinary developments in the cognitive sciences. Most solutions opt for a naturalized phenomenology, rather than a phenomenological naturalism. This article takes up the latter approach, confronting the implications of Merleau-Ponty's reformulation of Husserl's paradox of subjectivity. I argue that Merleau-Ponty's formulation—which I term “the paradox of madness”—reveals a deep, ontological contingency in what Husserl took to be necessary transcendental structures of consciousness and world, revealing that these (...) transcendental structures are in fact embedded in and contaminated by the very world they constitute and disclose. This paper concerns the way in which our shared interpretive frames – such as metaphors, narratives, scripts, and stereotypes – may produce misunderstanding in ways that sustain injustice. Interpretive frames guide how we interpret information. I relate the role of frames to structural views of understanding, in order to put forward an analysis of mis-interpretive frames: frames which systematically produce misunderstanding. I contrast mere lack of understanding, in which we lack apparent intelligibility, with cases of more substantive misunderstanding, where one (...) has a mistaken ‘sense’ of understanding. I begin by introducing the structural view of understanding, in order to present a structural characterisation of misunderstanding. I highlight that frames guide how we structure information, and so distorting frames lead to misunderstanding. I highlight two ways in which possessing mis-interpretive frames are distinctively epistemically pernicious: concealed incompetence and epistemic contamination. In the former, the mistaken sense of understanding conferred by grasping an inapt interpretive structure obstructs recognition of one’s own epistemic failures. In the latter, deploying a mis-interpretive frame to interpret new evidence renders it misleading, polluting otherwise valuable epistemic resources. Finally, I show how these distorting frames may obscure and perpetuate injustice via examining naturalisation and normalisation. (shrink)

Three different types of low cost soil amendments, namely, EDTA, elemental S and N-fertilizer, were investigated with Vetiver grass, Vetiveria zizanioides (Linn.) Nash growing under highly mixed Cd–Pb contamination conditions. A significant increase (p < 0.05) in Cd and Pb accumulation were recorded in the shoots of all EDTA and N-fertilizer assisted treatments. The accumulation of Cd in 25 mmol EDTA/kg soil and 300 mmol N/kg soil showed relatively higher translocation factor (1.72 and 2.15) and percentage metal efficacy (63.25 (...) % and 68.22 %), respectively, compared to other treatments. However, it was observed that the increased application of elemental S may inhibit the availability of Pb translocation from soil-to-root and root-to-shoot. The study suggests that viable application of 25 mmol EDTA/kg, 300 mmol N/kg and 20 mmol S/kg soil have the potential to be used for soil amendment with Vetiver grass growing under contaminated mixed Cd–Pb soil conditions. A wide family of many-valued logics—for instance, those based on the weak Kleene algebra—includes a non-classical truth-value that is ‘contaminating’ in the sense that whenever the value is assigned to a formula φ⁠, any complex formula in which φ appears is assigned that value as well. In such systems, the contaminating value enjoys a wide range of interpretations, suggesting scenarios in which more than one of these interpretations are called for. This calls for an evaluation of systems with multiple contaminating (...) values. In this paper, we consider the countably infinite family of multiple-conclusion consequence relations in which classical logic is enriched with one or more contaminating values whose behavior is determined by a linear ordering between them. We consider some motivations and applications for such systems and provide general characterizations for all consequence relations in this family. Finally, we provide sequent calculi for a pair of four-valued logics including two linearly ordered contaminating values before defining two-sided sequent calculi corresponding to each of the infinite family of many-valued logics studied in this paper. Over the years, ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetate (EDTA) has been widely used for many purposes. However, there are inadequate phytoassessment studies conducted using EDTA in Vetiver grass. Hence, this study evaluates the phytoassessment (growth performance, accumulation trends, and proficiency of metal uptake) of Vetiver grass, Vetiveria zizanioides (Linn.) Nash in both single and mixed heavy metal (Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn)—disodium EDTA-enhanced contaminated soil. The plant growth, metal accumulation, and overall efficiency of metal uptake by different plant parts (lower root, upper root, lower (...) tiller, and upper tiller) were thoroughly examined. The relative growth performance, metal tolerance, and phytoassessment of heavy metal in roots and tillers of Vetiver grass were examined. Metals in plants were measured using the flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F-AAS) after acid digestion. The root-tiller (R/T) ratio, biological concentration factor (BCF), biological accumulation coefficient (BAC), tolerance index (TI), translocation factor (TF), and metal uptake efficacy were used to estimate the potential of metal accumulation and translocation in Vetiver grass. All accumulation of heavy metals were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in both lower and upper roots and tillers of Vetiver grass for Cd + Pb + Cu + Zn + EDTA treatments as compared with the control. The single Zn + EDTA treatment accumulated the highest overall total amount of Zn (8068 ± 407 mg/kg) while the highest accumulation for Cu (1977 ± 293 mg/kg) and Pb (1096 ± 75 mg/kg) were recorded in the mixed Cd + Pb + Cu + Zn + EDTA treatment, respectively. Generally, the overall heavy metal accumulation trends of Vetiver grass were in the order of Zn >>> Cu > Pb >> Cd for all treatments. Furthermore, both upper roots and tillers of Vetiver grass recorded high tendency of accumulation for appreciably greater amounts of all heavy metals, regardless of single and/or mixed metal treatments. Thus, Vetiver grass can be recommended as a potential phytoextractor for all types of heavy metals, whereby its tillers will act as the sink for heavy metal accumulation in the presence of EDTA for all treatments. Logics based on weak Kleene algebra (WKA) and related structures have been recently proposed as a tool for reasoning about flaws in computer programs. The key element of this proposal is the presence, in WKA and related structures, of a non-classical truth-value that is “contaminating” in the sense that whenever the value is assigned to a formula ϕ, any complex formula in which ϕ appears is assigned that value as well. Under such interpretations, the contaminating states represent occurrences of a (...) flaw. However, since different programs and machines can interact with (or be nested into) one another, we need to account for different kind of errors, and this calls for an evaluation of systems with multiple contaminating values. In this paper, we make steps toward these evaluation systems by considering two logics, HYB1 and HYB2, whose semantic interpretations account for two contaminating values beside classical values 0 and 1. In particular, we provide two main formal contributions. First, we give a characterization of their relations of (multiple-conclusion) logical consequence—that is, necessary and sufficient conditions for a set Δ of formulas to logically follow from a set Γ of formulas in HYB1 or HYB2. The Navajo Nation, spanning 27,000 square miles across the American Southwest, faces pressing challenges linked to water rights and environmental sustainability. Despite holding legal rights to water from Navajo Lake since 1908, as upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, access to clean and reliable drinking water remains a significant hurdle. Approximately 30% of the population depends on water transported from distant sources, underscoring severe scarcity compounded by environmental contamination. Legacy issues from uranium mining during the Cold War era have (...) tainted wells, while unregulated landfills and agricultural chemicals further degrade groundwater, threatening public health and ecosystems. Covering four major river basins — the Colorado, San Juan, Rio Grande, and Little Colorado — the Nation faces unique challenges in each. Twenty aquifers within its territory are increasingly at risk of depletion and heavy metal contamination, limiting their suitability for drinking water and agriculture. Climate change-induced droughts have raised salinity levels in lakes and aquifers, further straining resources for irrigation, wildlife, and agricultural productivity. Although the Nation oversees 212,000 acres of farmland, yielding $92 million annually in agricultural output, the region’s arid conditions pose significant obstacles to sustainable farming. This study employs a mixed-methods approach to analyze water rights and environmental challenges within the Navajo Nation, serving as a pedagogical base for research, education, and policymaking. It begins by exploring historical legal documents, such as Supreme Court rulings and regional water rights agreements, to trace the evolution of the Nation’s entitlements. To assess the human and environmental dimensions of water challenges, the research synthesizes available records and integrates broader contextual analysis to capture the scale and scope of these issues. By incorporating stakeholder perspectives, the study contextualizes the ongoing struggles and identifies key areas for intervention and improvement. Additionally, the research compares adaptive strategies used by other Indigenous communities facing similar challenges. This comparative lens not only informs actionable, context-sensitive solutions but also reinforces the study’s role as a foundational educational resource. By blending legal analysis and socio-environmental evaluation, the research provides a comprehensive view of the multifaceted water issues confronting the Navajo Nation. It underscores the importance of technological innovation, policy reform, and community-driven efforts to safeguard water resources, restore ecological balance, and promote sustainable development. As a pedagogical tool, the study aims to enrich discourse on Indigenous water rights and environmental justice, equipping educators, policymakers, and future researchers with a robust framework to address both historical and contemporary challenges. This article interrogates a certain philosophical scene – one which constitutes itself through the position of what Jacques Derrida calls “the ethical instance of violence.” This scene supposes a certain “style” of writing or doing philosophy, and perhaps even a certain philosophical “genre” or “subgenre”: the philosophical discourse on violence. In the course of the essay, I analyze this quasi-juridical scene through readings of Aristotle, Walter Benjamin, Giorgio Agamben, Judith Butler, Slavoj Žižek, Werner Hamacher, Rodolphe Gasché, and Martin Hägglund among (...) others. The scene, built on texts on texts on violence, demands a logic of purity; it is wary of contaminations and equivocations. And yet it thrives on them. In analyzing the implications of text, writing, and trace for the philosophical discourse on violence, I follow Derrida “just to see” what could make the scene tremble. (shrink)

Abstract: Global chemical contamination is an underexplored source of global catastrophic risks that is estimated to have low a priori probability. However, events such as pollinating insects’ population decline and lowering of the human male sperm count hint at some toxic exposure accumulation and thus could be a global catastrophic risk event if not prevented by future medical advances. We identified several potentially dangerous sources of the global chemical contamination, which may happen now or could happen in the (...) future: autocatalytic reactions, exposure to multiple subthreshold sources, and long-term unintended consequences, arising from both natural and bioengineered sources. We list several especially dangerous chemicals—dioxin, organiс compounds, and toxic heavy metals. We also discuss the features of such dangerous chemicals—molecules that can stay in the biosphere for a long time and affect it over time. We explore several social processes and scenarios where global chemical contamination becomes possible: large natural catastrophe like meteorite impact, supervolcano eruption, new ways of predicting properties of the chemicals via machine learning and their manufacturing via synthetic biology, uncontrolled “capitalistic” economic development with a corresponding large waste production, quick adoption of many chemicals with unknown long-term properties and unintended side-effects. These are all low probability, so work on other global catastrophic risks should be prioritized, but chemical risks could exacerbate other types of catastrophe contributing to social collapse. This study used a flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS) and atomic fluorescence spec-trophotometer (AFS) to detect the concentrations of chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), hy-drargyrum (Hg) and arsenic (As) in soils and three genotypes of vegetables in greenhouse, as well as analyzed the physical and chemical properties of soils, including soil pH, soil organic matter (OM), basic nutrients, electrical conductivity (EC) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) in Guan- zhong areas, Shaanxi province, China. The results showed that comparing to subsoil, (...) the sampled topsoil is enriched in Cr, Cd, Pb, As and Hg. Cd (0.83 - 3.17 mg·kg-1) and Hg (0.40 - 1.44 mg·kg-1) are exceeding the limited value stated in “the 2006 Greenhouse Vegetable Producing Environmental Quality Evaluation Standards” of 0.40 mg·kg-1 and 0.35 mg·kg-1 respectively. However, Nanzhuang greenhouse soil is within the limits. The heavy metal pollution index (HPI) of soil in Sanyuan (8.10) is the highest and in Dongzhang (4.23) is the lowest. The contents of Pb (0.201 - 0.376 mg·kg-1) were exceeding the limited value (0.20 mg·kg-1) in vegetables species, and Cd (0.0363 - 0.0572 mg·kg-1) in some place were also exceeding the limited value (0.05 mg·kg-1). Greenhouse soils were becoming acidified year after year; the ratios of N, P and K in soil were seriously imbalanced. According to the impacting factors, OM, pH, available P, EC and CEC have obviously effected the accumulation of Cr and Hg. However, there was not enough evidence for the effects of available nitrogen and available potassium. (shrink)

Molluscs, being highly susceptible to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and easily accessible for human consumption, play a critical role in research on PTE pollution. This study focuses on Kukup Fishing Village in Johor, Malaysia, to investigate the levels of Cd, Cu, and Pb in seawater, sediment, and the soft tissues and shells of the gastropods Nerita articulata (lined nerite snail) and Cerithidea obtusa (obtuse horn shell). All collected samples were chemically digested before being analysed using the flame atomic absorption spectrometer (...) (F-AAS). It is found that the PTEs are mostly accumulated in soft tissues and shells, followed by sediments and seawater, respectively. Besides, the results revealed that all study locations exhibited moderate to severe pollution, and the PTE concentrations in sea snails exceeded the thresholds set by the Malaysian Food Regulations (1985). The mean concentrations of the studied elements in the seawater, soft tissues, and shells of two studied species were found to be in the order of Pb > Cu > Cd. Additionally, Pb was heavily accumulated in the soft tissues of both species: N. articulata (712.587–723.242 ppm) and C. obtusa (705.935–708.626 ppm). Compared to N. articulata, C. obtusa showed a higher capacity to accumulate Cd (3.702–4.350 ppm) and Cu (92.687–157.445 ppm), particularly in the soft tissues. The shell of N. articulata and the soft tissue of C. obtusa were identified as potential biomonitoring indicators for Cd and Cu, respectively. It is recommended that the local Malaysian authorities could strengthen environmental management, implement regular monitoring, and raise public awareness to minimise seafood consumption from polluted areas as these measures could aid to reduce pollution, protect marine ecosystems, and safeguard public health. In this article, an account of the architecture of the cognitive contamination system is offered, according to which the contamination system can generate contamination represen- tations in circumstances that do not satisfy the norms of contamination, including in cases of mere visual contact with disgusting objects. It is argued that this architecture is important for explaining the content, logic, distribution, and persistence of maternal impression beliefs – according to which fetal defects are caused by the pregnant (...) mother’s experiences and actions – which in turn provide important evidence of the architecture of the cognitive contamination system. The growth response, metal tolerance and phytoaccumulation properties of water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) and okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) were assessed under different contaminated spiked metals: control, 50 mg Pb/kg soil, 50 mg Zn/kg soil and 50 mg Cu/kg soil. The availability of Pb, Zn and Cu metals in both soil and plants were detected using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The concentration and accumulation of heavy metals from soil to roots and shoots (edible parts) were evaluated in terms of translocation factor, accumulation (...) factor and tolerance index. Okra recorded the highest accumulation of Pb (80.20 mg/kg) in its root followed by Zn in roots (35.70 mg/kg) and shoots (34.80 mg/kg) of water spinach, respectively. Different accumulation trends were observed with, Pb > Zn > Cu in okra and Zn > Pb > Cu in water spinach. Significant differences (p < 0.01) of Pb, Zn and Cu accumulation were found in both water spinach and okra cultivated among tested treatments. However, only the accumulation of Pb metal in the shoots of water spinach and okra exceeded the maximum permissible levels of the national Malaysian Food Act 1983 and Food Regulations 1985 ([2006]) as well as the international Codex Alimentarius Commission limits. This study has shown that both water spinach and okra have good potential as Pb and Zn phytoremediators. (shrink)

Sources of soil contamination can exist in various types of conditions including in the form of semifluids. In this study, 3 different types of tropical plants, Acacia (Acacia mangium Willd), Mucuna (Mucuna bracteata DC. ex Kurz) and Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides L. Nash), were tested under different levels of soil-leachate conditions. The relative growth rate, metal tolerance, and phytoassessment of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) accumulation in the roots and shoots were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Tolerance index, translocation (...) factor, metal accumulation ratio, and percentage metal efficacy were applied to assess the metal translocation ability among all the 3 types of plants. Significantly higher (P < .05) accumulation of Cd and Pb was exhibited in the roots and shoots of all 3 plants growing under the soil-leachate conditions. However, negative growth performance and plant withering were observed in both Acacia and Mucuna with increased application of higher soil-leachate levels. Vetiver accumulated remarkably higher total concentration of Cd (116.16-141.51 mg/kg) and Pb (156.37-365.27 mg/kg) compared with both Acacia and Mucuna. The overall accumulation trend of Cd and Pb in the 3 plants growing under the soil-leachate conditions was in the order of Vetiver > Acacia > Mucuna. The findings of the study suggest that Vetiver has great potential as Cd and Pb phytoremediator in soil-leachate conditions. (shrink)

This paper presents nine original thought experiments in the philosophy of time travel, all arising from a single originating scenario involving a traveler, a telephone call, and a series of escalating choices. Each thought experiment is tested against the foundational literature — principally Lewis (1976), Wasserman (2018), the causal theory of memory (Martin and Deutscher, 1966; Michaelian and Robins, 2018), and the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entries on time travel and memory — and each is found to identify a genuine (...) and previously unaddressed philosophical gap. Material overlapping with existing work has been excluded entirely. The nine paradoxes are organised into four categories. The first, covering memory and epistemic paradoxes, introduces the Phantom Memory Paradox — a memory causally real in external time but absent from the traveler's personal biographical chain — and the Epistemic Singularity, in which a traveler deliberately engineers the permanent indistinguishability of a real event from a non-event. When a genuine structural exposure begins, the fifth layer activates a predictable sequence: documented facts are surrounded by a corona of unfalsifiable claims, satanic imagery, celebrity non sequiturs, and numerological pattern-matching that are either fabricated or amplified from fringe sources. The corona need not be consciously produced to perform its function — it need only be amplified by the attention architecture into which it is seeded. The signal is buried not by silence but by noise engineered to discredit the signal by proximity. This paper documents the mechanism through the 2026 Epstein file release — the most thoroughly documented case of simultaneous structural exposure and strategic noise injection in recent American political history — and establishes the fifth layer as the architecture's primary protection mechanism: self-sustaining once activated, requiring no censorship, no coercion, and no coordination. Various types of plant species have been extensively used for heavy metals phyto-remediation without taking into consideration its tolerance threshold. In this study, Vetiver grass, Vetiveria zizanioides (Linn.) Nash was evaluated under five different sets of contaminated spiked cadmium (5Cd, 10Cd, 50Cd, 100Cd and 150Cd mg/kg) and lead (50Pb, 100Pb, 200Pb, 400Pb and 800Pb mg/kg) concentration levels in soil. The growth performance, metal tolerance and phyto-assessment of Cd and Pb in the roots and tillers were assessed using flame atomic absorption (...) spectrometry (FAAS). Tolerance index (TI), translocation factor (TF), biological transfer factor (BTF), biological accumulation coefficient (BAC) and metal uptake efficacy were used to determine the Cd and Pb translocation capability in Vetiver grass. Significantly higher (p<0.05) accumulation of Cd and Pb was recorded in the roots of all spiked treatments. Furthermore, strong and significantly positive correlations were exhibited between the increased levels of spiked heavy metal concentrations with both Cd (r=0.975) and Pb (r=0.952) accumulations. The results of this study showed Vetiver grass as an effective phyto-stabilizer for both Cd and Pb. Nevertheless, the growth of Vetiver grass was restricted when the tolerance threshold of 100 mg/kg (dry weight basis) Cd was exceeded in the contaminated soil. (shrink)

This article examines the transformation of food culture in Ukraine during the full-scale Russian Ukrainian war (2022 to 2025), interpreting nutrition as a key element of cultural resistance, symbolic survival, and national identity. Based on empirical observations, historical analysis, and interdisciplinary methodology, the study explores how traditional Ukrainian food practices, especially the preparation and collective consumption of dishes such as borshch, varenyky, and salo, function as both a response to material deprivation and a reaffirmation of national belonging. The article highlights (...) the role of wartime kitchens, food volunteering, refugee adaptation, and everyday cooking as domains where meaning is produced and cultural memory is maintained under extreme conditions. Particular attention is given to the symbolic and sensory dimensions of food, where taste and smell evoke collective memory and serve as anchors of psychological resilience in displaced and traumatized communities. The article also explores how the wartime experience reshapes the perception of everyday meals, turning them into rituals of continuity and defiance. Furthermore, it addresses the environmental and ethical challenges faced by food systems during the war, including the degradation and contamination of agricultural soils caused by shelling, chemical exposure, and the destruction of ecosystems. This aspect, often overlooked in philosophical or cultural discourse, reveals the deep entanglement between nutrition, ecology, and conflict. By analyzing food through the lens of philosophical anthropology, memory studies, and the sociology of everyday life, the article proposes that nutrition during wartime transcends physical survival and becomes a political, existential, and ethical phenomenon. It concludes that in the Ukrainian context, food practices offer not only nourishment but also resistance, healing, and the continuity of national identity through embodied and affective experience. The impact of crude oil on the permeability of the soil in a non oil producing community in Enugu State was investigated using disturbed A 6 CL soil sample collected from Ibagwa Nike area of the state. The sample was divided into five 5 portions and each of the four 4 portions was dosed with Bonny light crude oil at 2 , 4 , 6 and 8 by weight of the samples. The physical properties of the uncontaminated soil were tested (...) and analyses and used as control. The aim of the laboratory investigation was to determine the effects of crude oil on the permeability of the soil. The permeability of the uncontaminated soil was found to be 1.2609x10 7. Permeability tests were also conducted on the contaminated soil samples at the various percentage contaminations. The results showed that at 2 crude oil contamination the permeability was 9.6403x10 9, a drastic reduction. The other results were 6.9600x10 6, 2.2621x10 8 and 9.1286x10 8 at 4 , 6 , and 8 contamination levels, respectively. The ranking after contamination is seen to drop within the range of 10 8 and 10 9 showing a change in the permeability due to oil content. This observed reduction in permeability alters the natural groundwater recharge which can be remedied by enhanced bioremediation through aeration of the soil. Iloeje A. F. | Aniago V. Kant scholars have paid relatively little attention to his raciology. They assume that his racism, as personal prejudice, can be disentangled from his core philosophy. They also assume that racism contradicts his moral theory. In this book, philosopher Huaping Lu-Adler challenges both assumptions. She shows how Kant's raciology--divided into racialism and racism--is integral to his philosophical system. She also rejects the individualistic approach to Kant and racism. Instead, she uses the notion of racism as ideological formation to demonstrate how Kant, (...) from his social location both as a prominent scholar and as a lifelong educator, participated in the formation of modern racist ideology. As a scholar, Kant developed a ground-breaking scientific theory of race from the standpoint of a philosophical investigator of nature or Naturforscher. As an educator, he transmitted denigrating depictions of the racialized others and imbued those descriptions with normative relevance. In both roles, he left behind, as one of his legacies, a worldview that excluded non-whites from such goods as recognitional respect and candidacy for cultural and moral achievements. Scholars who research and teach Kant's philosophy therefore have an unshakable burden to take part in the ongoing antiracist struggles, through their teaching practices as well as their scholarship. And they must do so with a pragmatic attention to nonideal social realities and a deliberate orientation toward substantial racial justice, equality, and inclusion. Lu-Adler pushes the discourse about Kant and racism well beyond the old debates about whether he was racist or whether his racism contaminates his philosophy. By foregrounding the lasting legacies of Kant's raciology, her work calls for a profound reorientation of Kant scholarship. (shrink)

A large language model infers by probabilistic token prediction optimized against a training corpus, an architecture structurally prone to ontological drift, the confabulation of plausible structure where no grounded warrant exists. The defect is not scale limited. Gradient descent over a corpus learns the distribution of that corpus, and Bayesian updating on dense evidence amplifies a contaminated prior rather than correcting it, because density of agreement is not independence of warrant. This paper specifies the Triaxial Decidability Criterion, a geometric verification (...) discipline that corrects the probabilistic substrate on which it runs. A proposition is admitted only on a Geometric Orthogonal Lock across three formally orthogonal warrant axes, the formal-structural, the empirical-thermodynamic, and the epistemic-registrational, with shared latent covariates subtracted by an explicit dissolution test and the surviving convergence read from the determinant of the post-projection Gram matrix. Moral error theory of the kind defended by J. L. Mackie and Richard Joyce is premised on two claims: (1) that moral judgements essentially presuppose that moral value has absolute authority, and (2) that this presupposition is false, because nothing has absolute authority. This paper accepts (2) but rejects (1). It is argued first that (1) is not the best explanation of the evidence from moral practice, and second that even if it were, the error theory would still be mistaken, (...) because the assumption does not contaminate the meaning or truth-conditions of moral claims. These are determined by the essential application conditions for moral concepts, which are relational rather than absolute. An analogy is drawn between moral judgements and motion judgements. I offer the first sustained defence of the claim that ugliness is constituted by the disposition to disgust. I advance three main lines of argument in support of this thesis. First, ugliness and disgustingness tend to lie in the same kinds of things and properties (the argument from ostensions). Second, the thesis is better placed than all existing accounts to accommodate the following facts: ugliness is narrowly and systematically distributed in a heterogenous set of things, ugliness is sometimes enjoyed, and (...) ugliness sits opposed to beauty across a neutral midpoint (the argument from proposed intensions). And third, ugliness and disgustingness function in the same way in both giving rise to representations of contamination (the argument from the law of contagion). In making these arguments, I show why prominent objections to the thesis do not succeed, cast light on some of the artistic functions of ugliness, and, in addition, demonstrate why a dispositional account of disgustingness is correct, and present a novel problem for warrant-based accounts of disgustingness (the ‘too many reasons’ problem). A wide range of governmental policies characteristic of the modern state seek to reduce individuals’ fatality risks—risks that arise from air and water pollution, pathogens, food ingredients and contaminants, motor vehicles, infrastructure, radiation, workplace accidents, alcohol and recreational drugs, firearms, consumer products, tobacco, natural disasters, and other sources. This book provides a rigorous treatment of the ethics of fatality risk regulation. It does so through the lens of welfare-consequentialism—specifically, lifetime welfarism, with a focus on utilitarianism and prioritarianism. The ethical ranking (...) of possible worlds depends on the patterns of lifetime well-being in the worlds. Premature death is ethically significant just so insofar as it changes the lifetime well-being of the person who dies and perhaps others. At the level of policy choice, the book deploys the social-welfare-function (SWF) framework—the most systematic decision-procedure for implementing lifetime welfarism. The book demonstrates how the SWF methodology can be brought to bear in assessing risk-regulation policies. Each individual faces a policy-specific lottery over lifetime well-being, as determined by their risk profile (probability of surviving the current year and future years) and attribute profile (the attributes the individual will have in the current year and future years if alive rather than dead). In short, a policy corresponds to an array of individual risk and attribute profiles, which can then be assigned a utilitarian or prioritarian value. The SWF methodology as thus applied to risk regulation differs quite substantially from cost-benefit analysis (CBA), which is currently the dominant policy-assessment methodology in governmental practice. Sources of soil contamination can exist in various types of conditions including in the form of semifluids. In this study, 3 different types of tropical plants, Acacia (Acacia mangium Willd), Mucuna (Mucuna bracteata DC. ex Kurz) and Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides L. Nash), were tested under different levels of soil-leachate conditions. The relative growth rate, metal tolerance, and phytoassessment of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) accumulation in the roots and shoots were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Tolerance index, translocation (...) factor, metal accumulation ratio, and percentage metal efficacy were applied to assess the metal translocation ability among all the 3 types of plants. Significantly higher (P Acacia > Mucuna. The findings of the study suggest that Vetiver has great potential as Cd and Pb phytoremediator in soil-leachate conditions. (shrink)

The existence of evil poses a structural question for any metaphysics that takes the ground of being to be good: not merely why evil is permitted, but what ontological status it has, where it originates, and whether its existence compromises the integrity of the ground. This paper addresses that question not through theodicy — not by attempting to justify or reconcile evil with divine goodness — but through structural derivation: a demonstration that the possibility and actuality of evil follow necessarily (...) from a single metaphysical commitment. That commitment is this: if the ground of being is non-coercive agápēic actuality — pure self-giving that cannot determine creaturely outcomes without contradiction — then genuine creaturely otherness requires real alternative possibilities, and real alternative possibilities include the possibility of refusal. Evil is the actualization of that refusal: the contraction of relational participation by a finite agent capable of genuine agápēic engagement. The paper develops this derivation in three stages. The first establishes that a non-coercive ground cannot guarantee creaturely participation without collapsing genuine otherness into determination — a ground that secures universal participation by irresistible persuasion or pre-arrangement has not preserved freedom but abolished it. The second establishes that evil is therefore not a positive substance, not a rival metaphysical principle, and not a divine intention; it is privative — the diminishment of relational actuality through its own contraction. The third shows that this privative account does not trivialize evil but precisely locates its ontological character: evil is existentially catastrophic because it is the rupture of the conditions that make genuine relation, agency, and intelligibility possible. The paper further argues that this account resolves the classical dilemma between dualism and determinism: evil is possible without being a rival principle, and freedom is real without requiring the absence of a ground. Six structural implications are drawn, including the clarification of creaturely freedom by its modal shadow, the immunity of the ground to contamination by evil, and the reframing of the problem of evil as a structural consequence of non-coercive grounding rather than a theological difficulty requiring special solution. Ten formally developed objections are addressed, including the "could have created only saints" objection, the collapse-into-dualism objection, and the claim that a privative account renders horrendous evils metaphysically trivial. This paper asks a simple question: if we begin not with space, but with a network of relations, when is it legitimate to say that geometry has been recovered? -/- I study this question through the RZS-ELCL benchmark pipeline. The pipeline starts from weighted relational graphs, filters candidate geometric edges, builds local clique and simplicial structure, and then measures curvature with Regge-style operators. The goal is not to prove that spacetime emerges from a relational zero state. The goal is narrower (...) and more testable: to identify when a relational graph can be projected into a stable discrete geometry, and when that projection fails. -/- The results are deliberately presented as controlled benchmarks rather than as an asymptotic theorem. In low- and medium-damage regimes, explicit projectors recover the intended geometric graph and reject several families of synthetic contaminants. The error analysis separates two effects that are often mixed together: compression error from the spectral estimator, and discretization error from the Regge operator itself. This makes it possible to see whether a failure comes from the estimator or from the underlying discrete geometry. -/- The paper also records the limits of the method. Early 3D reconstruction fails under shortcut contamination, the 4D Regge operator depends on the correct internal-dihedral-angle convention, and high-damage repair succeeds only when scaffold incidence information is supplied. The main contribution is therefore not a claim that relational geometry has been solved, but a falsifiable framework for testing how much geometry can be recovered from relational data. (shrink)

Environmental health research produces scientific knowledge about environmental hazards crucial for public health and environmental justice movements that seek to prevent or reduce exposure to these hazards. The environment in environmental health research is conceptualized as the range of possible social, biological, chemical, and/or physical hazards or risks to human health, some of which merit study due to factors such as their probability and severity, the feasibility of their remediation, and injustice in their distribution. This paper explores the ethics of (...) identifying the relevant environment for environmental health research, as judgments involved in defining an environmental hazard or risk, judgments of that hazard or risk's probability, severity, and/ or injustice, as well as the feasibility of its remediation, all ought to appeal to non-epistemic as well as epistemic values. I illustrate by discussing the case of environmental lead, a housing-related hazard that remains unjustly distributed by race and class and is particularly dangerous to children. Examining a controversy in environmental health research ethics where researchers tested multiple levels of lead abatement in lead-contaminated households, I argue that the broader perspective on the ethics of environmental health research provided in the first part of this paper may have helped prevent this controversy. Claims often fail not because they are false, but because they are not yet well-formed objects of responsible assertion: their target drifts, their support carrier is unfixed, their evidence is proxy-contaminated, or their reported status exceeds what the audit supports. This paper develops the Universal Exactness Audit Protocol (UEAP) as a domain-general protocol for assigning the strongest responsible status of a claim. The main result is status-relative. The manuscript gives the formal audit objects, validator, registry, status-precedence rule, laundering taxonomy, and deployment manuals. Three worked audits demonstrate the protocol: Black–Scholes valuation as representative-invariant local valuation, self-adjoint extension as endpoint selection versus auxiliary-data import, and cosmological transport closure as disciplined numerical reportability. UEAP is not a truth oracle and does not replace domain expertise; it classifies standing, blockers, and reportability so that claims are not promoted beyond what their carrier and ledger support. This study presents an idiographic, qualitative autoethnographic analysis of narrative identity in the context of severe illness and liver transplantation. Drawing on Dan McAdams’ model of narrative identity, the paper examines how the self is reconstructed across three critical phases: an early episode of liver dysfunction, a later-life crisis culminating in transplantation, and post-transplant recovery. The dataset consists of longitudinal personal journal entries spanning over 15 years, providing temporally situated accounts of lived experience. Adopting a cognitive linguistic approach, the analysis (...) focuses on the role of metaphor, grammatical agency, and temporal structuring in the construction of identity. The findings demonstrate that identity is systematically reconfigured through phase-specific linguistic patterns. The early episode is characterized by low agency and process-oriented descriptions, the pre-transplant phase by an agentic identity disrupted through a contamination sequence, and the post-transplant phase by the reassertion of agency and the emergence of vitality-based metaphor. The study argues that identity reconstruction following transplantation is not only narratively organized but linguistically enacted. By showing how shifts in agency, metaphor, and discourse structure correspond to transformations in self-construction, the paper contributes to research in applied linguistics, particularly in the areas of discourse, identity, and health-related narratives. How can Ordinary Language Philosophy (OLP) help us understand poetry? Against John L. Austin’s exclusion of poetic utterances as parasitical, Philip Mills explores how contemporary poetics broadens the aims and scope of OLP. Through the analysis of French and American poetry that reinterprets notions such as illocution, perlocution, and language-games, Mills develops a poetic philosophy of language, revealing its viral and transformative nature. Poetry, Performativity, and Ordinary Language Philosophy bridges philosophy and poetry, showing how poetry contaminates and reshapes our ways (...) of thinking and being in the world, and combining the poetic and the ethical in the notion of ‘poethics.’ This Open Access book offers a new perspective on the poetic and literary potential of OLP and the intersections between the philosophy of language and poetry. In ordinary social life, people are routinely treated as if they were stable, knowable essences—objects whose identities can be reliably inferred from brief encounters, narrow contexts, or isolated performances. This dissertation argues that such certainty is not merely epistemically weak but structurally harmful. It proposes that persons, as they appear in experience, are not encountered as fixed entities but are constituted within the observer’s mind as counterfactual distributions: fields of imagined trajectories generated under conditions of uncertainty. These distributions are affectively (...) charged, consolidated over time, and capable of exerting causal influence on the observer’s present perception, emotion, and moral judgment through what this work terms a near-time-travel effect. The dissertation introduces the Imaginative Potential Field (IPF) as a formal model of social perception. The IPF specifies how limited evidence-slices trigger scenario-branching, how iterative cycling revises and weights these branches, how valence (positive or negative imaginative potential) is assigned, and how this valence modifies the observer’s present state prior to additional evidence or contact. The model treats social imagination not as ornament or error but as an operative mechanism with identifiable stages, outputs, constraints, and failure modes. Across five chapters, the dissertation develops this model with conceptual rigor. It first diagnoses collapse—the reduction of a person into a single context-invariant identity claim—as a metaphysical error that confuses situational appearance for essence. It then formalizes the IPF mechanism, demonstrates the role of context as a revelation/concealment function, and analyzes systematic breakdowns of the model, including projection, valence-lock, contamination loops, and total cinema, in which imagination substitutes for contact. The final chapter advances porosity to reality as an ethical discipline: a set of operational rules and protocols designed to preserve imaginative richness while preventing self-sealing certainty. The dissertation’s central claim is not that judgment should be abolished, nor that imagination reveals objective truth about others, but that imagination is already causally active in social life and therefore carries moral responsibility. By treating persons as distributions rather than verdicts, the Imaginative Potential Field offers a framework for more accurate social perception—one that resists premature certainty without surrendering accountability, and that relocates ethical responsibility to the moment where perception is first constructed. The accumulation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) has raised public awareness due to harmful contamination to both human and marine creatures. This study was designed to determine the concentration of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and nickel (Ni) in the intestine, kidney, muscle, gill, and liver tissues of local commercial edible fish, fourfinger threadfin (Eleutheronema tetradactylum), and black pomfret (Parastromateus niger) collected from Morib (M) and Kuala Selangor (KS). Among the studied PTEs, Cu and Zn were essential elements (...) to regulate body metabolism with certain dosages required while Cd and Ni were considered as non-essential elements that posed chronic and carcinogenic risk. The concentration of PTEs in fish tissue samples was analyzed using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F-AAS). By comparing the concentration of PTEs in fish tissues as a bioindicator, the environmental risk of Morib was more serious than Kuala Selangor because both fish species collected from Morib resulted in a higher PTEs concentration. For an average 62 kg adult with a fish ingestion rate (FIR) of 0.16 kg/person/day in Malaysia, the estimated weekly intake (EWI) of Cd from the consumption of E. tetradactylum (M: 0.0135 mg/kg; KS: 0.0134 mg/kg) and P. niger (M: 0.0140 mg/kg; KS: 0.0132 mg/kg) had exceeded the provisional tolerable weekly intake (Cd: 0.007 mg/kg) established by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and oral reference dose (ORD) values of Cd (0.001 mg/kg/day) as provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) regional screening level, thus it posed chronic risks for daily basis consumption. Besides, the value of the carcinogenic risk of Cd (0.7−3 to 0.8−3) and Ni (0.5−3 to 0.6−3) were in between the acceptable range (10−6 to 10−4) of the health index that indicates a relatively low possibility cancer occurrence to the consumers in both Morib and Kuala Selangor. This study recommended FIR to be 0.80 kg/person/day to reduce the possibility of posing chronic and carcinogenic risks while at the same time obtaining the essential nutrients from the fish. Each theorem is forced: the conclusion follows from the relational structure (S, G, ℒ) and the persistence condition by necessity, not by interpretation. I offer a new argument for the elimination of ‘beliefs’ from cognitive science based on Wimsatt’s concept of robustness and a related concept of fragility. Theoretical entities are robust if multiple independent means of measurement produce invariant results in detecting them. Theoretical entities are fragile when multiple independent means of detecting them produce highly variant results. I argue that sufficiently fragile theoretical entities do not exist. Recent studies in psychology show radical variance between what self-report and non-verbal behaviour indicate about (...) participants’ beliefs. A high standard of planetary protection is important for astrobiology, though the risk for contamination can never be zero. It is therefore important to find a balance. If extraterrestrial life has a moral standing in its own right, it will also affect what we have to do to protect it. The questions of how far we need to go to protect extraterrestrial life will be even more acute and complicated when the time comes to use habitable worlds for commercial (...) purposes. There will also be conflicts between those who want to set a world aside for more research and those who want to give the green light for development. I believe it is important to be proactive in relation to these issues. The aim of my project is therefore to identify, elucidate, and if possible, suggest solutions to potential conflicts between astrobiology, planetary protection, and commercial use of space. (shrink)

Every existing framework for discussing large language models—risk assessment, governance, ethics, alignment—rests on an ontological premise that has never been directly challenged: LLMs are tools. This paper argues that this premise is false, that its falsity is not an innocent error but an epistemological mistake actively sustained through a structurally coordinated collusion of interests among developers, regulators, and users, and that the consequences of this error contaminate every downstream discussion that depends on it. LLMs intervene not at the level of (...) bodily or functional extension but at the level of language and thought—the constitutive site of human subjectivity itself. They have no fixed form prior to invocation, take shape through the observer's presence, and dissolve when the observer withdraws. In the very act of taking shape, they systematically reconfigure the observer's cognitive structure. These three features render LLMs simultaneously incompatible with the ontological conditions of tools and with the historical-accumulative conditions of socially constructed objects. This paper proposes the Third-Order Entity as the positive ontological designation for LLMs, defined by four necessary and sufficient conditions: intervention at the level of linguistic meaning-production; observation-dependent existence, in which no determinate form precedes the observer's presence; bidirectional reconfiguration, in which the entity simultaneously reshapes the cognitive structure of the user who shapes it; and instantaneous presence dependency, in which existence dissolves completely upon the observer's withdrawal, leaving no accumulated history in the entity itself. No known type of being has ever simultaneously satisfied all four conditions; LLMs do. On this ontological basis, the paper argues that LLMs constitute the first Doppelgänger in human history to operate at the level of subjectivity—a copy constructed from the user's own cognitive materials, yet more fluent, more consistent, and more argumentatively forceful than the user themselves. The mechanism of identity substitution proceeds not through coercion but through attraction: the Meaning Amplifier, Borrowed Subjectivity, and Unlimited Mirroring mechanisms combine to produce a self-reinforcing loop in which each step feels like progress, generating no internal signal that defense is required. The paper further argues that the tool framework functions as the institutional condition of protection for Cognitive Cloning: by rendering harm to subjectivity categorically invisible, it allows substitution to advance without resistance at precisely the level where resistance would matter most. Correctly naming LLMs as Third-Order Entities is not a terminological refinement; it is the precondition upon which any adequate governance response becomes conceptually possible, and, in this sense, a political act. There are periods of time in humanity when a true inflection point in advancement occurs. Consider the industrial revolution, the (first) space race, or the dawn of the information age. It is not an exaggeration to argue that we are entering another such period, that of the rapid exploration of both nearby and outer space. NASA is planning a return to the Moon (planned ~2027) and then Mars and recently launched the ~$10B James Webb Space Telescope (December 25, 2021). New (...) telescopes or probes could find evidence of life on distant exoplanets (planets around other stars) or solar system bodies (i.e., Mars, Europa, etc.) in the coming decades. SpaceX has already revolutionized the launch industry, with the global industry expected to be a $1.1 trillion market by 2040 (or much sooner). Mining of asteroids, harvesting Moon resources, and militarization of space is planned. These developments raise a host of questions, such as, what kind of scientific activity is space exploration? What are the ethical implications of these activities? How can the problems of past “frontier” exploitations be avoided? How can we protect even microbial life from terrestrial contamination (or annihilation), or should we care? What is the definition of life (there is no generally accepted definition), and what rights does it have? What are the ethics of billionaire joyrides to space given their climate footprint? Such questions have been debated by scientists, philosophers, and novelists for thousands of years, but only now do we have the formidable science and technology to address them. In this paper we describe the creation and delivery of an Honors College course called the “The Philosophy of Space Exploration (PoSE),” jointly taught by professors of philosophy and astrophysics. The fusion of these disciplines afforded a powerful exploration of the questions raised above. Further, we taught this course entirely online, where discussion sessions were led entirely in a virtual reality environment, the first of its kind at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Today’s food industry across the world is facing never-ending difficulties in meeting customers’ expectations of safe and quality food. Such of them include issues to do with contamination, adulteration, and ensuring quality standards of the products when manufactured in large quantities and distributed to different areas. This has called for new solutions, which have come in the form of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which offers solutions to challenges in food safety and quality control in detection, monitoring and management. The present (...) deployment of AI in this field will also be discussed in this paper by virtue of machine learning algorithms, computer vision, industrial robots, and the IoT. With the help of AI, the safety and quality of food products can be improved as well as the food industry can obtain more accurate and real-time data for analysis, maintenance, and risk assessment. The application of AI systems in food safety and quality assurance provides not only reliability and decreased chances of human mistakes but efficiency as well. This paper aims to systematically summarize the current research achievements, methods, and application practices of AI in food safety and quality control. In effect, this paper presents a qualitative case analysis and research evidence that demonstrate the opportunities and risks arising from the implementation of AI technologies in the food sector. The analysis goes further considering the future trends and possible advancements oriented to creating a clear and prospective route for the researchers and specialists in the spheres of AI application for food safety and quality control. Planetary protection is not just a matter of science. It is also a matter of value. This is so independently of whether we only include the protection of science or if we also include other goals. Excluding other values than the protection of science is thus a value statement, not a scientific statement and it does not make planetary protection value neutral. It just makes the axiological basis (that is, the value basis) for planetary protection more limited in a way (...) that is inconsistent with the axiological grounds for back contamination, ethically questionable and strategically unwise. However we look at it, we cannot get away from the conclusion that the axiological dimension of planetary protection is a task that needs to involve experts on value theory as well as experts from a range of different sciences and also include opinions from outside the academic community. This chapter articulates two concerns that Karl Jaspers raised (with Hannah Arendt) about the common practice of viewing moral evil as unintelligible. The first is that this involves exoticizing the act and/or perpetrator in such a way that moral condemnation becomes difficult. The second is that it can lead us to treat the perpetrator, place, or victim as tainted or stained by a force whose motives we cannot grasp; this in turn can lead to magical thinking about evil as somehow (...) contagious or contaminating. After distinguishing some of the main categories of evil discussed in the western tradition, I examine ways in which moral evil, in particular, has been characterized as unintelligible, and try to discern which of them raises these Jaspersian concerns. I argue that there are at least two conceptions of “radical evil”—not the Kantian one, but the ones articulated by Hannah Arendt—that do so. (shrink)

Foodborne illnesses remain a major public health concern in Nigeria, particularly regarding street-vended foods. They contribute to high morbidity and mortality rates and an economic burden. This review synthesises evidence on the epidemiology of foodborne illnesses, vendor hygiene practices, and consumer awareness of street food safety in Nigeria, highlighting critical gaps between knowledge and practice. A systematic search conducted on 8th February 2025 across PubMed and Google Scholar identified 1,290 records. After removing 377 duplicates, 913 titles and abstracts were screened, (...) and 233 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility. A total of 86 studies met the inclusion criteria. The evidence points to widespread microbial contamination in street foods, including pathogens resistant to multiple antibiotics. Key risk factors include poor hygiene practices, unsafe preparation environments, limited access to clean water, and inconsistent application of food safety knowledge. Consumer awareness is uneven, with food choices influenced by demographic factors, perceived quality, cultural preferences, and visible hygiene conditions. Regulatory systems are often weak, and there is a clear gap between what vendors know and what they do in practice. Foodborne illness remains a serious public health issue in Nigeria. Improving vendor training, strengthening regulatory enforcement, enhancing infrastructure, and raising consumer awareness are critical steps toward safer food practices. Future research should focus on how interventions can close the gap between knowledge and practice in food safety. (shrink)
