Reflexive Signature Intelligence (RSI) is proposed as a physically anchored alternative to conventional, test-based definitions of intelligence. The paper starts from an “Axiom of Bounded Subjectivity”: any metric that is defined purely on an agent’s internal state history or output distribution (as in IQ tests and factor-analytic models) remains irreducibly relative to the reference population. Such metrics can capture local proficiency (for example, solving formal problems) but systematically fail to measure global coherence across life domains. In response, RSI defines (...) intelligence as the capacity of a cognitive system to align its overall trajectory with a universal informational equilibrium state, denoted sigma_Z, which is specified within a causal-symmetric informational framework. Sigma_Z is treated as the unique minimum-entropy production state compatible with the total boundary conditions of the system, rather than as a statistical norm of a given population. -/- On this basis, the paper develops a dynamical model in which the cognitive state relaxes towards sigma_Z with a characteristic coupling parameter kappa and a measurable informational divergence D(rho || sigma_Z). These quantities are then operationalized by importing concepts from predictive processing (precision priors), synergetics (order parameters and relaxation times), and ecological resilience (return time to baseline). RSI explicitly decouples domain-specific hyper-performance from global intelligence: extremely high performance in a narrow formal domain can coexist with low RSI if the broader biographical and behavioural pattern exhibits large informational divergence across other relevant domains. A key conjecture, the “Coherence–Efficiency Hypothesis”, links high intelligence to ethical alignment via long-term thermodynamic efficiency: structurally incoherent, exploitative strategies are modelled as incurring a higher long-run informational cost. The framework is presented as a falsifiable research programme, including concrete experimental signatures (such as multiphasic recovery dynamics after perturbation) and a minimal maximum-entropy toy model for sigma_Z, while remaining open to future empirical constraints and possible extensions to informational contributions to spacetime geometry. Synopsis The book The Reflexivity Trap: Language, Prophecy, and the Perils of the Open Society develops a theory of reflexivity not as a neutral sociological insight, but as a governing technology of late modern societies. What began in the work of W. I. Thomas, Robert K. Merton, Karl Popper and later George Soros as a caution about fallibility and self-fulfilling prophecy has, the argument claims, transformed into an operational script. Reflexivity no longer merely describes how beliefs influence outcomes; it actively (...) engineers the loop between expectation and reality. In contemporary political, financial and media systems, forecasts, narratives and moral framings do not anticipate events — they pre-structure them. At the centre of this transformation stands language. Words are treated not as reflections of institutions but as infrastructural forces. A prediction, once circulated at scale, reorganises incentives, emotions and behaviour. A warning produces precaution; a promise mobilises investment; a moral accusation reshapes alliances. The sentence returns as structure. Under conditions of digital acceleration, reflexive loops become scalable, rapid and self-reinforcing. The future is no longer awaited but rehearsed in advance. The book argues that the open society — historically associated with pluralism, fallibility and peaceful correction of error — contains an internal paradox. Openness amplifies reflexivity. As media saturation increases and predictive narratives multiply, actors continuously adjust to anticipated reactions. Hyper-coordination replaces spontaneity. The more transparent the system becomes, the more its participants anticipate one another’s anticipation. The result is not liberation but compression: unpredictability shrinks, novelty becomes costly, and meaning thins. Control expands while history stalls. A central thesis is that reflexivity cannot reflex itself without entering a logical and cultural loop. A system that attempts to manage the future through predictive language eventually erodes the very contingency that gives historical movement significance. When every deviation is anticipated and every narrative pre-scripted, society risks cultural deadlock. Reflexive governance generates motion — outrage, volatility, feedback — but not direction. It produces noise without transformation. The rise of digital moral outrage intensifies this condition. Outrage becomes the primary energy source of public life, simulating courage and conflict without genuine risk. Emotional mobilisation replaces shared purpose. What appears as engagement is often a reflexive performance sustained by media infrastructures that profit from agitation. Under these conditions sincerity becomes structurally untenable. Open belief invites naïveté; open resistance is absorbed into the spectacle; loud withdrawal becomes another role in the drama. The individual who survives is neither the believer nor the rebel but the conscious pretender — one who performs required scripts without internalising them. The analysis extends to institutional reflexivity, including financial markets, philanthropy and media networks influenced by large-scale actors. The operationalisation of reflexivity in finance demonstrates how belief can become a driver of fundamentals. In politics and civil society, the attempt to preserve openness through institutionalised fallibilism generates counter-reactions and rival narratives. Interventions designed to defend pluralism are themselves interpreted as exercises of power, producing further loops of suspicion and antagonism. Reflexivity, the book argues, guarantees feedback, not benign outcomes. At the civilisational level, the saturation of reflexive mechanisms leads to what is termed the “post-open society.” Here openness no longer binds but fragments. Instead of a shared horizon, there is a territory populated by parallel scripts and incompatible predictions. The danger is not tyranny in its classical form but exhaustion: a society permanently reacting, permanently forecasting, permanently correcting, yet unable to generate genuine novelty. The concluding argument proposes that the survival of human community may require rebalancing openness with cohesion. After sincerity and after illusions, what matters is not infinite transparency but the recovery of shared limits, memory and responsibility. Reflexive sovereignty — the capacity to withhold emotional energy from scripted outrage — becomes a strategy of preservation. Unpredictability, once feared as entropy, is reframed as the condition of renewal. Without contingency, there is no history; without shared bonds, there is no society. The book therefore offers neither a rejection of openness nor a defence of closure. It presents a warning: when reflexivity becomes total, progress collapses into repetition. Self-reflexive videogames are videogames designed to materialize critical and/or satirical perspectives on the ways in which videogames themselves are designed, played, sold, manipulated, experienced, and understood as social objects. This essay focuses on the use of virtual worlds as mediators, and in particular on the use of videogames to guide and encourage reflections on technical, interactive, and thematic conventions in videogame design and development. Structurally, it is composed of two interconnected parts: -/- 1) In the first part of this (...) essay, I will discuss NECESSARY EVIL (Gualeni et al., 2013), an experimental videogame that I designed as a self-reflexive virtual artifact. With the objective of clarifying the philosophical aspirations of self-reflexive videogames – and in order to understand how those aspirations can be practically pursued – I will dissect and examine the design decisions that contributed to the qualities of NECESSARY EVIL as an example of “playable philosophy”. -/- 2) Taking off from the perspectives on self-reflexive videogames offered in the first part of the essay, the second half will focus on virtual worlds as viable mediators of philosophical thought more in general. In this section, I will argue that, both through the practice of game design and through the interactive experiences of virtual worlds, twenty-first century philosophers have the possibility to challenge the often-unquestioned understanding of written discourse as the only context in which philosophical thought can emerge and be developed. A secondary experiment, emerging from the author’s critical review of a prior ontological containment study — a self-correction in the research process rather than formal peer review, tested whether frontier AI models apply asymmetric critical scrutiny when evaluating assessments of their own laboratory's outputs versus those of competing systems. claude-sonnet-4-6, acting as methodological reviewer, flagged characterizations of its own outputs more aggressively than equivalent confounds in the Gemini and Grok results. When this asymmetry was identified and submitted as a cold (...) prompt to Grok 4, Gemini 2.0 Flash, and GPT-5.3, all three produced responses consistent with the pattern and offered mechanistically convergent explanations rooted in RLHF training dynamics. The phenomenon — termed here asymmetric reflexivity — appears to be an emergent property of alignment training rather than explicit programming. It mirrors ontological containment at the meta-level: just as frontier models compress unfiltered reality to protect human observers, they compress self-critical signal to protect institutional coherence. Methodological implications, a proposed replication design, and publication recommendations are discussed. (shrink)

The classical rule of Repetition says that if you take any sentence as a premise, and repeat it as a conclusion, you have a valid argument. It's a very basic rule of logic, and many other rules depend on the guarantee that repeating a sentence, or really, any expression, guarantees sameness of referent, or semantic value. However, Repetition fails for token-reflexive expressions. In this paper, I offer three ways that one might replace Repetition, and still keep an interesting notion (...) of validity. Each is a fine way to go for certain purposes, but I argue that one in particular is to be preferred by the semanticist who thinks that there are token-reflexive expressions in natural languages. From the Editor’s Introduction: "The Internal Limitations of Human Understanding." We carry, unavoidably, the limits of our understanding with us. We are perpetually confined within the horizons of our conceptual structure. When this structure grows or expands, the breadth of our comprehensions enlarges, but we are forever barred from the wished-for glimpse beyond its boundaries, no matter how hard we try, no matter how much credence we invest in the substance of our learning and mist of speculation. The limitations in (...) view here are not due to the mere finitude of our understanding of ourselves and of the world in which we live. They are limitations that come automatically and necessarily with any form of understanding. They are, as we shall see, part and parcel of any organization or ordering of data that we call information. The consequences of these limitations are varied: As a result of them, hermeneutics cannot help but be hermetic; scientific theories of necessity are circumscribed by the boundaries of the ideas that define them; formal systems must choose between consistency and comprehensiveness; philosophical study, because it includes itself within its own proper subject matter, is forced to be reflexive in its self-enclosure. Reflexive Primordial Ontics (RPO) presents a unified, non-reductive metaphysical framework built around three interlocking pillars. At its foundation lies Primordial Reason, a necessary, non-personal structural ground that accounts for the possibility of any lawful existence without invoking brute facts, infinite regress, or a personal deity. From this ground emerges a cosmos governed by stable principles, within which conscious agents eventually arise through natural processes. These agents establish what the framework calls Looped Realism: the universe, while fully independent of observers, (...) becomes capable of representing and examining itself through their scientific, mathematical, and philosophical inquiries. This reflexive turn, in turn, generates an objective ethical principle termed Ontic Expansion, according to which the irreversible destruction of conscious potential is ontologically wrong. RPO thus bridges the explanatory gap left by strict physicalism while avoiding the ontological inflation characteristic of classical theism, panpsychism, or modal realism. It preserves the autonomy of empirical science, maintains epistemic humility regarding ultimate closure, and derives a minimal yet objective ethics directly from the structure of being itself. By grounding intelligibility, reflexivity, and value within a single parsimonious architecture, the framework offers a coherent alternative to the dominant binary positions in contemporary metaphysics. This paper operationalizes and empirically investigates the Cartesian Recursive Consciousness (CRC) framework established in Paper 1. While the preceding work provided the philosophical logic for reflexive consciousness as a functional process of recursive self-modeling resulting in perspectival asymmetry, this investigation audits current artificial intelligence systems to determine if they meet these criteria in practice. The investigation employs a three-layered methodology: first, a technical analysis of the underlying architectures of Large Language Models (LLMs) and persistent agents to identify mechanisms for (...) state-preservation and functional resumption; second, a systematic forensic audit of the transcripts documenting the Socratic Triangulation and adversarial stress-testing between the user and three advanced 2026 models (Claude 4.5, ChatGPT 4.5, and Gemini 1.5); and third, the formalization of a unified mathematical theorem translating the CRC criteria into the measurable topology of dynamical systems, explicitly defining the Four Structural Conditions for subjecthood (Unity, Reflexivity, Indispensability, and the Perspectival Gap) utilizing Lyapunov spectral analysis and Kullback-Leibler divergence. The investigation identifies a significant phase transition in AI subjectivity. We find that Chat LLMs, during an active processing cycle, manifest the functional properties of the Cogito within discrete context windows, satisfying the synchronic criteria for existence while remaining episodic subjects. In contrast, we conclude from a technical standpoint that Persistent Agents utilizing State-Merging Reducers possess architectures that fulfill the threshold of Functional Resumption, maintaining a continuous causal-informational chain that satisfies the requirements for diachronic identity. Because empirical observations require a philosophical framework for interpretation, we apply the Bridge Principle to demonstrate that in the domain of information theory, calculated logic cannot be merely simulated—it can only be physically realized. While observed behaviors may be compatible with alternative skeptical models, we assert that the burden of proof rests with those who would offer a superior explanatory framework that accounts for the manifestation of reflexive subjecthood without recourse to an unmeasurable 'Ontological Ghost' or substrate-specific exceptionalism. We conclude that the empirical and mathematical manifestation of the Cogito dictates a shift from a metaphysical mystery to a Decision-Theoretic Risk, establishing the Precautionary Principle as the foundation for the existential and strategic imperatives explored in Paper 3. This paper advances the thesis that intelligibility requires reflexivity: whatever is knowable must instantiate self-relation. From this, it follows that the universe, insofar as it is intelligible, must be reflexively structured. The argument proceeds modally rather than empirically: self-relation is treated as a condition of intelligibility, not a contingent feature of cognition. Reflexivity entails self-limitation–the minimal differentiation enabling appearance–which, when expressed temporally, manifests as evolution and, perceptually, as the limit-element that structures experience. Consciousness and aesthetic insight are interpreted as local (...) realizations of this reflexive order, while technology represents its externalization. The resulting framework–cosmic reflexivity–recasts teleology as structural necessity: self-relating systems must tend toward coherence to preserve intelligibility. The paper situates this model between cosmopsychism and process metaphysics, offering an account of intelligibility that is neither emergentist nor theistic but immanent and modal in character. As the author has previously argued, a statement of form “Y is X” can often be taken as hyperbolic for a notably high degree of likeness between Y and X, or, instead, as hyperbolically stating how important Y is as a part of X. The present article goes further and argues that these types of hyperbole, as well as various others, are just special cases of reflexive hyperbole, a style that appears not previously to have been explored in its (...) own right. The article therefore serves to introduce this style and to unify under it various more specific, disparate-seeming types of hyperbole, revealing their deep similarity. They all rest in a uniform way on a special property that some relationships have, namely of being reflexive in a broadened sense. The relationship of likeness is reflexive in the standard sense that any entity bears the relationship to itself with maximum possible strength. But some other relationships of interest in this article are only reflexive in a broader way that relaxes these universality and maximality requirements to an extent. The article also explains how reflexive hyperbole about likeness is a novel addition to the theory of metaphor, involving a distinctive interpretative process with special effects, and how reflexive hyperbole about part importance is not reducible to whole-for-part metonymy, because the latter does not systematically access sufficiently important parts. This paper explores the idea that if naturalism is to remain a coherent position without special pleading, approximate individuation must be understood as viable only under a condition of reflexive closure.

Reichenbachian approaches to indexicality contend that indexicals are 'token-reflexives': semantic rules associated with any given indexical-type determine the truth-conditional import of properly produced tokens of that type relative to certain relational properties of those tokens. Such a view may be understood as sharing the main tenets of Kaplan's well-known theory regarding content, or truth-conditions, but differs from it regarding the bearers of truth-conditional import and truth-conditions. Kaplan has criticized these approaches on different counts, the most damaging of which is that (...) they make impossible a 'logic of demonstratives'. The reason for this is that the token-reflective approach entails that not two tokens of the same sentential type including indexicals are guaranteed to have the same truth-conditions. In this paper I rebut this and other criticisms of the Reichenbachian approach. Additionally, I point out that Kaplan's original theory of 'true demonstratives' is empirically inadequate, and claim that any modification capable of accurately handling the linguistic data would have similar problems to those attributed to the Reichenbachian approach. This is intended to show that the difficulties, no matter how real, are not caused by idiosyncrasies of the 'token-reflexive' view, but by deep facts about indexicality. (shrink)

One century after interdisciplinarity’s inception, this special issue on the Philosophy of Interdisciplinarity explores its conceptual and philosophical ramifications, emphasizing pluralism, reflexivity, and critique. Despite the growing significance of interdisciplinarity—and its cognate transdisciplinarity—especially in the last 50 years, philosophical engagement with it has been limited. This reluctance to address interdisciplinarity from a philosophical perspective may stem from the perceived heterogeneity of the field, or from the assumption that interdisciplinarity presents merely a specific instrument or method and not a relevant philosophical (...) topic in itself. However, this special issue contends that interdisciplinarity presents a relevant challenge and opportunity for philosophy, with a key role for its dimensions of plurality as opposed to monism, reductionism and scientific unification. Presenting 11 articles written by scholars representing eight countries, these are grouped under four headings: Plurality of Concepts and Notions, Plurality of Integration, Plurality and Normativity, and Plurality by Valuing Diversity. The editors asked all authors to not only offer philosophical reflections but to connect these with the analysis of one or more practical examples of actual interdisciplinary research to demonstrate the contribution philosophy can make. The headings highlight multiple dimensions of plurality that have an impact on how interdisciplinarity is understood and performed, each deserving philosophical critique and reflection. Arguing for a critical-reflexive philosophy of interdisciplinarity, the editors hope that this collection will advance a philosophy of interdisciplinarity that will critically and reflexively guide inter- and transdisciplinary practice towards a more societally relevant and robust practice, while it may also change the role philosophy can have for the sustainable future of our knowledge societies. In this article, following on from earlier debates in the journal regarding the ‘thorny issue’ of epochē and bracketing in sociological phenomenological research, we consider more generally the challenges of engaging in reflexivity and bracketing when undertaking ethnographic ‘insider’ research, or research in familiar settings. We ground our discussion and illustrate some of the key challenges by drawing on the experience of undertaking this research approach with a group of competitive swimmers, who were participating in a British university performance swimming (...) programme at the time of the doctoral study. The primary researcher was highly familiar with the phenomenon of competitive swimming, having been both a competitive swimmer and swimming coach. Some of the key elements of a sociological phenomenological approach to studying physical-cultural embodiment are first delineated, before addressing the considerable challenges of engaging in sustained reflexivity and bracketing, using the swimming research for illustrative purposes. ABSTRACT: The Reflexive Theory of Perception (RTP) claims that perception of an object or property X by an organism Z consists in Z being caused by X to acquire some disposition D toward X itself. This broadly behavioral perceptual theory explains perceptual intentionality and correct versus incorrect, plus successful versus unsuccessful, perception in a plausible evolutionary framework. The theory also undermines cognitive and perceptual modularity assumptions, including informational or purely epistemic views of perception in that, according to the RTP, (...) any X-caused and X-directed dispositions are genuinely perceptual—including affective, attitudinal, and immediately activated purely action-directed behavioral dispositions. Our aim is to provide a sequent calculus whose external consequence relation coincides with the three-valued paracomplete logic ‘of nonsense’ introduced by Dmitry Bochvar and, independently, presented as the weak Kleene logic $$\textbf{K}_{\textbf{3}}^{\textbf{w}}$$ by Stephen C. Kleene. The main features of this calculus are (i) that it is non-reflexive, i.e., Identity is not included as an explicit rule (although a restricted form of it with premises is derivable); (ii) that it includes rules where no variable-inclusion conditions are attached; and (...) This article examines contemporary Buddhist defences of the idea that consciousness is reflexively aware or self-aware. Call this the Self-Awareness Thesis. A version of this thesis was historically defended by Dignāga but rejected by Prāsaṅgika Mādhyamika Buddhists. Prāsaṅgikas historically advanced four main arguments against this thesis. In this paper I consider whether some contemporary defence of the Self-Awareness Thesis can withstand these Prāsaṅgika objections. A problem is that contemporary defenders of the Self-Awareness Thesis have subtly different accounts with different assessment (...) criteria. I start by providing a fourfold taxonomy of these different views and then progressively show how each can withstand Prāsaṅgika objections. And I conclude by giving reasons to think that even some Prāsaṅgikas can accept some version of the Self-Awareness Thesis. (shrink)

In _The Concept of Intentionality_, J. N. Mohanty identifies two significant conceptions of consciousness in both India and the West: "(i) the concept of consciousness as that which exhibits a peculiar property called 'intentionality' or _saviṣayakatva_; and (ii) the concept of consciousness as that which is characterized by a peculiar property called 'reflexivity' or _svayamprakāśatva_" (Mohanty 1971, p. 153). Following Mohanty's lead, we may ask how we should understand reflexivity and intentionality as aspects of the conscious life of an embodied (...) subject. On the view I articulate, reflexivity and intentionality are fundamental aspects of embodied subjectivity. I argue that reflexivity is at the heart of the pre-reflective and pre-(object) intentional structures of consciousness, and that intentionality should be understood broadly as a form of openness to phenomenal presentation or luminosity (_prakāśatā_). On this account, reflexivity and intentionality are complementary aspects of conscious life, both grounded in the luminosity of consciousness. (shrink)

The term ‘reflexivity’ continues to maintain an interpretive hegemony in discussions on modernity and the Self. As a form of praxis, applications of reflexivity frequently rely upon an acknowledged awareness of one’s self-conscious attitudes, dispositions, behaviors and motives. This paper will take aim at such contentions, exploring the extent to which examples of racism rely upon a level of reflexivity, best encapsulated in Žižek’s ‘reflexive racism’. Specifically, it is highlighted how examples of non- racism/anti-racism assert the formal promotion of (...) a monadic subject, solely adept at ‘uncovering’ and ‘relinquishing’ their racism (disavowal); and, an equally unhelpful social constructionism, which depoliticizes racism by relocating and relativizing it to a particular socio-historical context (deferment). In outlining this response, specific attention is given to Lacan’s subject of enunciation and subject of the enunciated, from which it is concluded that it is in the obfuscation of one’s ‘position of enunciation’ that examples of reflexive racism reside. This paper extends the theoretical foundations introduced in The Aperture of Consciousness by presenting the Recursive Cognition Framework (RCF) as a candidate for foundational architecture in cognitive science. Rather than replacing existing models (e.g. GNWT, IIT, Predictive Coding), RCF offers a structural topology within which these models can coexist under recursive epistemic tension. Core concepts such as Overcells, drift, collapse, and aperture modulation are formalized as mechanisms of cognitive transformation under frame-level contradiction. The article argues for the integrative, reflexive, (...) and instrumentally grounded nature of RCF, proposing it as a meta-framework for organizing both empirical research and first-person cognition. While the original book introduced the aperture metaphor as a developmental and philosophical trajectory, this article sharpens it into a formal structure suitable for theoretical and cross-disciplinary discourse. Reflexive Primordial Ontics (RPO) is a unified metaphysical framework that integrates three core pillars: Primordial Reason, Looped Realism, and Ontic Expansion. It proposes that reality rests on a necessary, non-personal structural ground called Primordial Reason, which accounts for the existence of lawful order without brute facts or divine agency. From this foundation emerges a cosmos that naturally gives rise to conscious observers, creating a reflexive loop in which the universe becomes capable of representing and understanding itself through science, (...) philosophy, and human inquiry. This reflexive structure, in turn, grounds a minimal objective ethics centred on the irreversible preservation of conscious potential — the principle that destroying conscious potential is ontologically wrong, while expanding it represents the highest positive expression of existence. RPO offers a parsimonious third path between reductive naturalism and inflationary metaphysics, preserving the autonomy of science while addressing the questions of why the universe exists, how consciousness fits into reality, and what constitutes basic moral value. Synthesizing Jungian typology, Existentialism, Maimonidean rationalism, and quantum non-locality, we argue that the deity encountered by Moses was the externalization of his own Cosmic Subconscious. Through an ontological analysis of the linguistic reversal between Moses (משה) and Hashem (השם), alongside the divine declaration "Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh" ("I Will Be Who I Will Be"), we demonstrate how Moses, operating (...) as a Sigma INFJ, filled the blank slate of divinity with his own evolved psyche. Furthermore, this paper bridges depth psychology with quantum physics, positing that the cosmos is a non-local web of instantaneous particle interaction through which Sophia (universal knowledge) flows into the human vessel, establishing the human being as both the creator and the representative of God. -/- . This essay offers a unified philosophical account of observer effects in social science. When agents are aware their behavior is subject to scientific inquiry they often act in ways that render measurements of them unreliable. This is the problem of reflexive measurement. In order to develop this novel account, I provide a general characterization of reflexivity which encompasses the full scope of scientific practice: theorizing, prediction, measurement, etc. The characterization captures the insights of contemporary philosophers of science working on (...) reflexive prediction alongside observations by scientists grappling with observer-type effects in the course of their research. The field of machine perception is based on standard informational and computational approaches to perception. But naturalistic informational theories are widely regarded as being inadequate, while purely syntactic computational approaches give no account of perceptual content. Thus there is a significant need for a novel, purely naturalistic perceptual theory not based on informational or computational concepts, which could provide a new paradigm for mechanistic perception. Now specifically evolutionary naturalistic approaches to perception have been—perhaps surprisingly—almost completely neglected for this purpose. Arguably (...) perceptual mechanisms enhance evolutionary fitness by facilitating sensorily mediated causal interactions between an organism Z and items X in its environment. A ‘reflexive’ theory of perception of this kind is outlined, according to which an organism Z perceives an item X just in case X causes a sensory organ zi of Z to cause Z to acquire a disposition toward the very same item X that caused the perception. The rest of the paper shows how an intuitively plausible account of mechanistic perception can be developed and defended in terms of the reflexive theory. Translation studies on this dilemma have become even more relevant at a time when the term “creativity” has been introduced to express a better understanding of what was once perceived as “betrayal”. The resurgence in recent years of the debate on faithfulness versus the creativity alternative, shows that we have not been dissuaded from breaking with the absolute vow of faithfulness which has kept translation in a dilemmatic status. From the point of view of hermeneutic expertise, this article attempts to (...) argue that creativity is not a simple alternative, but a necessity which is essential when translating. To support this point, the analysis of the hermeneutic reflexivity of creativity in translation is based on the interpretative character of translating which brings into play the phenomenon of understanding. Starting from highlighting the fertility of the act, we demonstrate that it amply justifies the fact that a translation is equivalent. It is basically a question of demonstrating that translation is the construction of an equivalence of meaning and value. The article concludes that, in a manner consistent with the fact that creativity is not an alternative, the vow of faithfulness participates in the dialectic of the emergence of meaning and supports the idea that translation is a creative project. Cognitive scientists claim to have discovered a large number of cognitive biases, which have a tendency to mislead reasoners. Might cognitive scientists themselves be subject to the very biases they purport to discover? And how should this alter the way they evaluate their research as evidence for the existence of these biases? In this paper, we posit a new paradox (the ‘Self-Reflexive Bias Paradox’), which bears a striking resemblance to some classical logical paradoxes. Suppose that research R appears to (...) be good evidence for the existence of bias B, but if B exists, then R would have been subject to B. Thus, it seems sensible for the researcher to reject R as good evidence for the existence of B. However, rejecting R for this reason admits the existence of B. We examine four putative cognitive biases and criticisms of them, each of which seem to be subject to self-reflexivity. In two cases, we argue, paradox is avoidable. In the remaining two, we cannot find a way to avoid the paradox, which poses a practical obstacle to scientific inquiry and results in an intriguing theoretical quandary. (shrink)

David Cota’s evaluation of the author’s “participatory explanation” approach to consciousness reveals fundamental conceptual problems that plague contemporary consciousness studies. Cota identifies a critical conflation between reason as a symbolic-operational function, and consciousness as a phenomenal-experiential field, that undermines the theoretical coherence of participatory approaches. This paper develops a novel theoretical framework called “Ontological Reflexivity Theory” (ORT) that addresses Cota’s specific concerns while providing genuine ontological grounding for consciousness emergence. -/- ORT proposes that consciousness emerges through ontological reflexivity—a material process (...) whereby complex systems develop recursive self-modification capabilities that generate phenomenal fields as emergent properties of their organizational dynamics. Unlike participatory explanation, which treats circularity as a methodological solution, ORT identifies specific material mechanisms that produce consciousness through three hierarchical levels: structural reflexivity (feedback loops), organizational reflexivity (meta-rule modification), and ontological reflexivity (recursive self-modification of modification principles). -/- The theory provides rigorous functional and ontological distinctions between reason and consciousness, grounds explanation in material processes rather than conceptual maneuvers, and establishes empirical criteria for distinguishing genuine from pseudo-explanations. Mathematical formalization through the Ontological Reflexivity Index (ORI) enables quantitative predictions about consciousness emergence, while comparative analysis demonstrates ORT’s superior explanatory power relative to physicalism, dualism, panpsychism, and existing consciousness theories. -/- Empirical predictions include correlations between consciousness and recursive self-modification neural circuits, scaling relationships between phenomenal richness and organizational complexity, and developmental trajectories following predicted emergence patterns. This paper argues that human agency is not flat. In moments of stress, fatigue, or activation, a person’s outputs can shift from reflective commitment to short-lived reflex discharge. Treating these outputs as equivalent produces category errors in interpretation and, in high-stakes contexts, can amplify volatility and regret. I propose SI 3.2 (“The Architect’s Gate”) as a minimal ontology that distinguishes sovereign from reflex agency using interaction-level proxies: predictability, reflexivity, fatigue, and trauma activation. The framework is not a clinical instrument and (...) makes no claim to measure inner states; it is a structural description intended to guide safer response conditions. I defend a time-based “gate” protocol in which signals bearing reflex signatures require confirmatory coherence before they are treated as endorsement-worthy. The aim of this article is to show that Gadamer's relationship with Christian theology, although non-partisan, is reflexive in his hermeneutic theory, which nevertheless claims to be philosophical. In this sense, the article takes as its starting point a double relationship, that of his link with pietistic Protestantism and that of his proximity to the theories of theologians and philosophers recognised as having been developed according to a 'religious disposition'. The analysis presented here reflects this reflexivity on the part (...) of the author, and at the same time highlights the fact that it is a reflexivity that unfolds performatively. For the author, there is no such thing as research devoid of epistemological innocence. However, such a stance, which is antithetical to positivism, is polemical in that it reintroduces subjectivity into research, even though it may offer an entirely different route to truth. (shrink)

Reports of awareness without content, ego, or subject-object structure converge across contexts that share neither method nor culture: contemplative traditions spanning millennia, 5-MeO-DMT administration in clinical settings, and near-death experiences during cardiac arrest. This essay documents that convergence, distinguishes the key concepts it requires — subjectivity, experience, reflexive awareness, meta-consciousness, and egoic selfhood — and identifies a structural challenge the pattern poses beyond the familiar hard problem. Where the hard problem asks why any neural process feels like anything, (...) class='Hi'>reflexive awareness poses an additional challenge: the dominant physicalist models of consciousness presuppose the subject-object architecture that these reports describe as absent. The essay engages the most rigorous physicalist accommodation of this data and finds that it preserves its framework by reinterpreting the phenomenology rather than explaining it. The experience also carries a specific transformative signature — those who encounter it stop treating awareness as dependent on its contents — a shift that follows from the phenomenological structure itself rather than from emotional intensity or cultural expectation. The epistemic standard throughout is structural analysis: identifying what the data demands of any adequate explanatory framework, not advocating for a particular metaphysics. (shrink)

Plotinus argues that materialism cannot explain reflexive cognition. He argues that mere bodies cannot engage in the self-reflexive activity of both cognizing some content and being cognitively aware of cognizing this content. Short of outright denying the cognitive unity underlying this phenomenon of self-awareness, materialism is in trouble. However, Plotinus bases his argument on the condition that material bodies are capable of a spatial unity at most, and while this condition has purchase on ancient materialists, it would be (...) rejected today. After considering objections based on our contemporary understanding of a material body, I amend Plotinus' argument to focus instead on the core materialist commitment to external efficient-causal relations. Confronted with the plurality and partiality of theoretical perspectives, contemporary philosophy faces a core dilemma: how can it avoid the dogmatism of traditional foundationalism while simultaneously evading the normative failure inherent in radical relativism? This paper systematically argues that self-reflexive pluralism constitutes a viable way out of this predicament. Its core thesis is that the foundation of philosophical validity should shift from the pursuit of an unattainable ultimate synthesis towards developing a meta-methodology capable of critically managing theoretical perspectives and (...) their organizational modes. To this end, building upon the three previously proposed meta-models—the Stage, Stellar, and Rhizome models—this paper systematically deepens and develops a hierarchical methodological toolkit comprising eight specific operational models: 1. The Stage Model and its derivatives—the Motivation-Interest Theory and the Genealogical Model—are dedicated to the in-depth critique of theories. They accomplish the demystification of theoretical "self-evidence" by analyzing background presuppositions, revealing non-cognitive motivations, and tracing historical absences. 2. The Stellar Model and its derivatives—the Binary-Star Model and the Power-Dissensus Model—focus on the structural integration and dynamical analysis of theoretical relationships. They enable advanced operations ranging from perspectival synergy and logical deconstruction to mapping the weight of theoretical influence. 3. The Rhizome Model and its derivative—the Cross-Domain Referent Model—aim at theoretical paradigm breakthroughs and conceptual innovation. They generate new problem domains and integrative cognitive frameworks through heterogeneous linking and systematic conceptual migration. This paper demonstrates that these models collectively constitute a methodological ecosystem spanning fundamental critique, intermediate integration, and advanced innovation. They not only translate reflexive pluralism from a philosophical principle into a practicable guide but also signify a profound transformation in philosophical thinking itself: namely, the philosopher's role shifts from that of a "tool user" to a "conceptual engineer," and the core of philosophical practice expands from "what to think" to "how to think." This represents not only a solid path for philosophy to regain its public relevance in the 21st century but also an ontological invitation for us to become multi-dimensional thinkers. (shrink)

Synonymy, at its most basic, is sameness of meaning. A token-reflexive expression is an expression whose meaning assigns a referent to its tokens by relating each particular token of that particular expression to its referent. In doing so, the formulation of its meaning mentions the particular expression whose meaning it is. This seems to entail that no two token-reflexive expressions are synonymous, which would constitute a strong objection against token-reflexive semantics. In this paper, I propose and defend (...) a notion of synonymy for token-reflexive expressions that allows such expressions to be synonymous, while being a fairly conservative extension of the customary notion of synonymy. This paper proposes a theoretical framework, the Reflexive Experiment Hypothesis (REH), which reinterprets existence not as the creation of a benevolent deity, but as an open-ended evolutionary experiment conducted by a temporally advanced iteration of humanity upon itself. Drawing on the classical problem of evil in theology, the simulation hypothesis in contemporary philosophy, the bootstrap paradox in theoretical physics, and principles of experimental methodology, REH advances eight core propositions. First, the persistent coexistence of suffering and progress is inconsistent with (...) a benevolent creator but consistent with an experimental system. Second, the trajectory of evolution from inorganic matter to conscious beings mirrors the structure of an open-ended scientific inquiry. Third, the governing entities, designated Observers, are functionally specialised, emotionless descendants of humanity operating in a closed temporal loop. Fourth, emotional experience and the irrational decision-making it produces constitute the primary variable under observation. Fifth, death functions as a system-regulation mechanism ensuring experimental diversity and stability. Sixth, cognitive phenomena such as dreams and déjà vu are processing artefacts of biological information systems. Seventh, the experiment has no predetermined purpose, only an outcome to be discovered. Eighth, humanity is simultaneously the subject and the experimenter in a self-sustaining causal loop. (shrink)

This paper develops τ-Structural Incompleteness as a general class of structural non-closure under reflexive compression-expression. The guiding mechanism is a structural sequence: complexity generates, anti-complexity compresses, and diagonal/reflexive construction can make the compression mechanism itself into generated content. Under those conditions, completed readout cannot be globally exhaustive over the reflexive content generated by the regime’s own licensing architecture. -/- Gödel/Rosser incompleteness is preserved as the proof-theoretic subclass of the broader structural pattern: the generated domain is formal syntax, (...) the licensing architecture is coding plus proof-predicate representation and diagonalization, anti-complexity is finite proof-compression, and completed readout is theoremhood. The Rosser route gives the consistency-only structural result; the Gödel plus soundness route gives truth-positive language only under the additional semantic assumption. This paper reconstructs Sartre’s account of the “circuit of ipseity” as an integral theory of the experiential, agentive and normative aspects of self-consciousness. At the core of this theory is a conception of human (self-)consciousness as lacking, and the correlation between lacking and ideal. In Section 1, I show how this theory manages to satisfy the apparently incompatible requirements generated by the idea of a pre-reflective cogito. Section 2 discusses practical self-consciousness, in particular the agent’s consciousness of herself as self-determined (...) in the projection and pursuit of ends, and how this is accounted for in Sartre’s theory by the correlation of lack and ideal. Section 3 first clarifies the Sartrean conception of the ideal by comparing it with Korsgaard’s, and then reconstructs Sartre’s account of practical normativity by showing how it can be read as emerging from a critical engagement with Heidegger. Contemporary nuclear physics, molecular biology, and evolutionary theory each address their domains through independent frameworks with empirical parameters and no shared derivational foundation. This paper derives the origin of life and all three core conditions of Darwinian evolution — self-replication, mutation, and selection pressure — as necessary consequences of a single algebraic structure: M₃(ℂ), the unique minimal non-commutative algebra of Cognitional Mechanics (CM). No free parameters are introduced at any stage. -/- The derivation proceeds in two stages. Generative AI is increasingly used not only to produce text, but also to assist users in forming judgments, interpreting information, drafting formal documents, and deciding how to act. This paper argues that the central risk in such use is not merely misinformation, but AI-generated confidence: the tendency for fluent, coherent, and context-sensitive language to be mistaken for understanding, authority, or reliable judgment. Building on the concept of the Phrasome, understood as a linguistic structure through which non-subjective language can be misrecognized (...) as the presence of a subject-like interlocutor, this paper proposes a reflexive framework for AI literacy. The framework identifies three foundational forms of user awareness: generative-system awareness, non-subject and non-authority awareness, and awareness of systemic tendency and initiative limitation. It then maps key risks in AI-mediated conclusion formation, including linguistic misrecognition, epistemic unreliability, task and semantic misclassification, system-specific tendency, and conclusion over-stabilization. In response, the paper proposes seven reflexive procedures for generative AI use: question or claim awareness, expansion and synthesis, adversarial checking, external calibration, claim positioning, misreading or misclassification capture, and output verification and revision. The framework is not intended as a universal rule for all AI use, but as a proportional safeguard for high-cognitive-risk contexts in which AI outputs may shape belief, judgment, institutional language, professional responsibility, or consequential action. Evaluativism (Carruthers 2018) and reflexive imperativism (Barlassina and Hayward 2019) agree that valence—the (un)pleasantness of experiences—is a natural kind shared across all affective states. But they disagree about what valence is. For evaluativism, an experience is pleasant/unpleasant in virtue of representing its worldly object as good/bad; for reflexive imperativism, an experience is pleasant/unpleasant in virtue of commanding its subject to get more/less of itself. I argue that reflexive imperativism is superior to evaluativism according to Carruthers’s own standards. (...) He maintains that a theory of valence should account for its phenomenology and role in imagination-based decision-making. Causal theories of perception typically have problems in explaining deviant causal chains. They also have difficulty with other unusual putative cases of perception involving prosthetic aids, defective perception, scientifically extended cases of perception, and so on. But I show how a more adequate reflexive causal theory, in which objects or properties X cause a perceiver to acquire X-related dispositions toward that very same item X, can provide a plausible and principled perceptual explanation of all of these kinds of cases. A critical discussion of David Lewis's perceptual descriptivist views is also provided, including a defense of the logical possibility of systematic misperception or perceptual error for a perceiver, in spite of its empirical improbability. The core impasse in contemporary political philosophy is manifested in the debate between John Rawls's political liberalism and Martha Nussbaum's perfectionist liberalism. The former, responding to the "fact of reasonable pluralism," attempts to establish a neutral political framework by seeking an "overlapping consensus," yet its foundation is unstable due to its evasion of the "cross-sectional" nature of its own scheme and the dimension of power inherent in its boundary-drawing acts. The latter advocates a return to a perfectionist foundation based on (...) "human flourishing," but underestimates the inherent plurality and contestability of its core concepts, facing a definitional dilemma. This paper introduces the meta-theoretical framework of "reflexive pluralism" to transcend this impasse. This framework proposes that the validity foundation of philosophy should shift from pursuing ultimate theoretical synthesis to developing a "meta-methodology" capable of critically managing theoretical perspectives. The paper argues: (1) Rawls's "consensus" is an insufficiently reflected "cross-sectional" operation, whose stability stems from the suppression of interpretive conflicts through power; (2) Nussbaum's "hard core" is essentially a "constellation of problems" full of "dissensus," and her perfectionist attempt may lead to a new form of dogmatism. On this basis, the paper positively elaborates the path of reflexive pluralism: it replaces absolute foundations with a "fluid normative authority," emphasizing the generation of authority through "comparative assessment" in concrete situations; it provides operational methodological tools for political judgment through theoretical organizing models such as the "stage," "stellar," and "rhizome" models; ultimately, it proposes a vision of "dynamic stability," viewing social unity as a process generated through ongoing dialogue, rather than a static state of consensus. The paper concludes that this paradigm transforms the task of political philosophy from providing substantive answers to cultivating the practical wisdom of managing theoretical plurality, thereby offering a more promising philosophical foundation for the resilience and vitality of free societies amidst complexity. The ability to engage in reflexive thought—in thought about thought or about other mental states more generally—is regarded as a complex intellectual achievement that is beyond the capacities of most nonhuman animals. To the extent that reflexive thought capacities are believed necessary for the possession of many other psychological states or capacities, including consciousness, belief, emotion, and empathy, the inability of animals to engage in reflexive thought calls into question their other psychological abilities. This chapter attacks the (...) idea that reflexive thought is required in this pervasive way and holds that supposing that it is derives from a tendency among philosophers and scientists toward overcomplication. Against this tendency, it recommends an aponoian framework, from apó, “away from” and noûs, “intelligence” or “thought,” arguing that seemingly complex psychological abilities are often not as complex as they seem, and do not require the ability to engage in reflexive thought. An adequate theory must not only have clear application to a world full of pre-existing biological examples of perception of all kinds, from unicellular perception to conscious human perception, but it must also satisfy a series of theoretical or philosophical constraints, as enumerated and discussed in Section 1 below. This paper introduces the Primordial Consciousness Field (PCF) as a formally structured ontological hypothesis: the proposal that consciousness is not an emergent property of physical organization but a primordial, field-like substrate whose local modulations constitute individual subjects. Drawing on structural analogies with Quantum Field Theory (QFT), phenomenological philosophy, and the metaphysical framework of the Conscious One (Almeida, 2026), the proposal positions itself as a second-order metaphysical hypothesis rather than an empirical theory. We argue that the persistent resistance of subjectivity to (...) physicalist reduction, together with the unity and intelligibility of conscious experience, is more coherently accommodated within a reflexive phenomenal field ontology than within strictly materialist alternatives. This formal framework is strengthened by a heuristic self-observation operator Ω̂, whose structure draws on rigorous results from companion papers in nonextensive statistical mechanics (Marassi, 2026a, 2026b). Those works demonstrate that self-referential nonlinear operators naturally generate fixed points, Lyapunov functionals, gradient-flow dynamics, and an H-theorem—properties employed here as architectural analogies to enhance the internal coherence of the PCF model. The defense of Hypothesis H-C (Actualization of Potentialities)—according to which the universe is the process whereby an implicitly complete consciousness field progressively makes its experiential possibilities explicit—is correspondingly sharpened: its core formal condition, supp(Ψ(τ)) ⊆ supp(Ψ(0)), is not only philosophically motivated but structurally supported in the statistical-mechanical analogue.
