Entropic Resistance and the Emergence of Consciousness: A Substrate-Neutral Framework

Abstract

This paper proposes a theoretical framework reconceptualizing consciousness and intelligence as emergent properties of entropic resistance systems. All organized matter exists on a spectrum of entropic resistance, from structural resistors—physical systems maintaining organizational integrity through chemical and geometric constraints—to conscious resistors, systems whose organizational complexity produces emergent modeling capacity. Consciousness is not a binary property but a spectral emergent phenomenon arising when collections of structural resistors cross as yet unspecified complexity thresholds. Intelligence is a further emergent property nested within conscious resistance, defined by the scope of modeling that extends beyond direct sensory experience into abstraction and counterfactual representation. Convergent evidence from thermodynamics of driven self-organization (England, 2013) and the Second Law of Infodynamics (Vopson, 2023) suggests the progression toward increasing complexity may itself be physically compelled rather than merely contingent. The framework generates four falsifiable predictions: that organizational complexity correlates measurably with entropic resistance capacity; that degradation of modeling capacity correlates with measurable increases in entropic vulnerability; that oppression and deprivation produce measurable spectrum regression; and that consciousness and intelligence are substrate-neutral properties, such that non-biological systems meeting equivalent organizational complexity thresholds should demonstrate equivalent spectral positioning. Moral implications are addressed, including the relationship between oppression as imposed entropy, actualization as maximum conscious resistance, and the precautionary principle under genuine empirical uncertainty.
