Can't copy

Hi all,
I have an IDE adapter (IDE to USB) that I can use with my laptop to view (and access) the files on an old IDE hard drive.
Simple enough.
However, I wish to copy the data from said hard drive to another external drive (directly).
Lappy is on Win2k, Dell Latitude.
Can't remember how to find boot priority in its BIOS (doing this remotely with technophobe parents - daring...). If I could, I'd tell it to boot from old IDE drive (which has WinXP on it, albeit corrupted heavily so it will only boot in safe mode).
At least then the mouse would (hopefully) overpower the touchpad (can't remember how to tell it to do that either), which is faulty.
NB only available mice are PS2, which seem to be disabled before I even go near the BIOS. Disabling the touchpad and forcing it to use serial (BIOS setting, only option that seemed vaguely likely that Dad read to me) just made the cursor disappear forever...

Bah humbug. Any help most appreciated!!
