Other Characters: None currently (previously Claudia Donovan)

Character Name: Neri
Series: Ocean Girl/Ocean Odyssey
Age: 18
From When?: Immediately post season 4

Inmate/Warden: Warden. Neri is very open-minded and understanding. She has a love of humans, as their emotions and everything else about them interest her. Neri is an alien from the planet of the oceans (yes, one with more oceans even than Earth), so she'd also relate well to other creatures, too. She's quite curious and loves to learn, and to help.

Item: Humpback whale. A silver necklace in the shape of her island that her father left for her.

Abilities/Powers: Most of these other than the swimming ones she probably won't be using too much, since many aren't expanded upon or used a whole lot even in the series. (Also I don't want to trip up other players.)
  • Above average strength - For example, she quite easily picked up a coin that was super-glued to the floor.

  • Advanced immune system - Heals faster than humans and is resistant to some illness.

  • Can swim underwater for long distances without surfacing for air, as well as being able to swim faster than most humans. She can also handle water pressure up to great depths.

  • Enhanced hearing, at least beyond that of a human - She could hear Brett crying for help from the other side of her island. During testing they also learned she can hear pitches higher than humans.

  • "I've never known Neri's instincts to be wrong." This is said a few times throughout the series, specifically about Neri sensing when there's danger or something bad is going to happen. (This is limited though, and in the series mostly involves when something wrong is about to happen in the ocean, or if one of her friends is in trouble.)

  • A gift rare and special even among her own people, she has the ability to heal others through touch.

  • Noninvasive telepathy. She can't read people's minds, but she can communicate with those closest to her. With Charley, she could also see what he was seeing, while he was seeing it. In the first season they also test her by blindfolding her and holding up flashcards. Neri correctly tells the testers what images are on the flashcards. (Though from certain readings in the testing room, it's presumed she may actually do this somehow by echolocation?) This wouldn't work with words, however, as Neri can't read. There aren't a whole lot of examples of her using this power, beyond communicating with Charley and her sister telepathically, and during the third season when her mere presence appeared to enhance the readings of a geological scanner (they assume this is also due to her telepathy).

  • Personality:

Neri lived alone with her father on their island for many years before he passed away, and he taught her how to live on the island and survive by herself. He also told her to never take more than she needs. When she's, in turn, teaching her sister Mera this, Neri tells her something along the lines of "Be kind to the island, and it will be kind to you." Throughout the series it's apparent that she not only believes this of the island, but of everything in life - if you give kindness, you will receive kindness.

Her friends and family are the most important to her. They come first. However, because her father once told her that people can be dangerous and that she needs to be careful, it does take a little while for her to trust people fully. (There is an exception made for friends of friends, of course. Or those who Charley tells her she can trust.) Once they've gained her trust, though, they'll have a friend for life, as Neri is extremely loyal. She does get angered if a friend breaks a promise, though. Once she's given her word to someone she's duty-bound to keep it, and she expects others to be the same way. But even if someone isn't her friend, she will still come to their rescue when needed, even if it means putting herself in danger.

A close second in importance comes her sense of duty as a protector of Earth's oceans and as the chosen one of her people to prepare the Earth for peaceful migration. Her deal with the Admiral, therefor, will be for this to happen - for no one to be hurt during the eventual integration of her people into Earth's society.

Not just oceans and humans, nature in general is something that Neri loves. She's adept at working with herbs and plants, and she gets along quite well with animals, even if she can't communicate with any of them except for Charley. Having lived on her island most of her life, she feels the most at home around nature. This doesn't mean, however, that she's incapable of living in a modern setting or even of understanding modern instruments. In fact, her own planet was miles ahead of Earth in terms of technology. She's also shown she can pick things up/learn them fairly quickly, not just in terms of technology but also language, she can pretty easily understand slang she's heard for the first time, as long as she can understand the context in which it's used.

There are times when she's practically a force of nature herself. She's stubborn and bold, and if she gets it into her head that something must be done, she'll do it without second thought, which can and has gotten her into trouble. The only exception for this is if there's a chance that someone else may be hurt. While she hardly ever fears for herself (in fact, in Neri's planet's language, there's not even a word for "fear"), she does fear for other people. She cares about others and would never do anything to physically hurt anyone, not even in her own defense. She doesn't condone violence, not even for vengeance, as it doesn't solve anything so much as it just adds to the "badness" already in the world.

Neri relies quite heavily on her instincts. In her own universe, her instincts are usually correct, and she's learned quite a lot after having interacted with humans for four years what is appropriate. But there was a time quite early on when she tried to take a music box out of a store merely because she "wanted to have it". She also once kissed a boy because she saw it being done in a movie and wondered what it was like, at the time not understanding about romantic feelings. While she's learned enough not to repeat these specific mistakes, it does go to show that with new situations she does, in fact, tend to rely on her instincts.

While she will believe her purpose on the Barge is to help people, she's also here to learn. There are many situations she's never been forced to deal with before, and by being here I hope it will help her understand that being evil doesn't necessarily always mean being greedy or power-hungry, but that there are many other circumstances and situations that cause people to do bad things. She doesn't believe anyone to be bad down to their core, she already believes that people can change. In her world, being a better person starts with believing in yourself and having others believe in you, and she will try to teach that to any inmate she has. It's likely that she will have to expand on this belief in order to be the best warden she can, but she's always willing to learn and, in fact, is keen to.

    Barge Reactions:

Considering Neri herself is an alien from another planet, and even another universe, it will be easy for her to suspend disbelief regarding the Barge in its entirety and ports/floods in specific. (She's also already had the experience of dying and coming back to life, as well as speaking with a ghost. So it's not hard to get her to believe in things.)

In regards to other characters she meets, she's going to be very intrigued, and will wish to learn about all of them, the reasons they're here, what they want to do/accomplish.

It's likely for every or most ports/floods/breaches she'll want to help out as much as she can, so I know she'll definitely be getting involved.

    Sample Journal Entry:

[When the video begins, there's water. More specifically, only beams of sunlight piercing the waves can be seen, as well as a few fish here or there. Then... the silhouette of a girl moving smoothly through the water, legs together as she kicks and propels herself closer. After a second her face takes up the screen, and she appears to scoop the communication device up into her hands.

The video goes dark for a minute as she shoves it into a pocket of her strange, raggedy dress. Soon, though, there's sunlight again, as Neri takes the object out to examine it more closely, sitting cross-legged on the sand in the CES.
    ]

I am told I am here to help people. [She begins, slowly, obviously thinking over her words.] This place is so strange. Almost nothing real. But here... [She moves the communicator to show off her surroundings, the beach and trees and even the soft, distant sound of birds.] Here is real enough. Not home, because no Charley, no family. But it is enough. While I help.

[She brings the communicator back around and smiles at the screen, a bit sadly.] I know I cannot stay here for always, in the... [Slowly:] The.. Sea E Ess? ...But is nice to visit, when it looks like home. [That sad smile lifts a little.] I want to learn of your homes. Of the places you like? I wish to learn.

    Sample RP:

There is no Charley here. No Brett, no Jason. No Mother, no Sister. Neri has been alone before, and she has been among strangers before. This is different. This is different, because she can't even hear Charley from here. And there have not been many times when she hasn't been able to hear him. She knew this was to happen, but it's still rather distressing, all the same.

She finds herself in her cabin, though it looks more like an indoor set for a beach film. There's sand, and water. There's a tree with her nest built up inside of it. It's nice. But it isn't real. She cannot feel the sun, or smell the salt in the ocean breeze. It's just... fake. Which almost makes her more homesick than she would be if it was a standard room with wood floors and a bed. She can't stay here. The longer she stays, the more her heart aches.

So she wanders. She explores the deck, but it's so close-but-not-quite-familiar that she can't stand being there long, either. Next she tries the pool. That's also a bad choice. It's water, but it's changed water. Something about it isn't right. She gives up that idea, and spends some time walking the hallways of the different levels, watching people (mostly watching them give her strange looks or pissed off glares as she drips water onto the floor), before she makes her way to the CES.

There lies a happy surprise for her. It's a beach. Soft sand beneath her bare feet, the sound of birds and other animals in the air, the warmth of the sun on her skin. And water. A place for her to swim without feeling confined or barraged by odd chemicals. So she does. She swims. She swims, in fact, for hours, and slowly the familiarity that washes over her senses eases the heartache, the homesickness. When she finally surfaces for air, she can feel the smile on her face, and with it comes a realization and a rekindled determination. Here is alright. Here, she can do good. And she will do good. For the sake of others, and for the sake of the Earth.

    Special Notes:
Neri can only spend so long out of water before she gets dehydrated. An exact length of time is never stated, but it's probably about three or four hours approximately before she starts feeling bad. After that, she needs to get in water (or pour water on herself, though that will only do for so long). It takes days without water before it will actually kill her, though, as shown in the fourth season.

I've taken the liberty in my RP samples to make her cabin resemble, very loosely, her home island. She can, however, survive and feel moderately comfortable in a cabin that's just like everyone else's (bed, floors, etc.), so long as she has a bath/shower that she can wet herself down in periodically. If the change in cabin isn't okay, then let me know and I'll have hers be more standard.
