Nightwish in Montreal - September 1st 2008
Nighwish returned to Montreal last night, a city that loves them and adores them, and sells out every time they come over.
This is the second time that the band comes in this city with Anette as their lead vocalist. Was this show different from the previous one? Yes it was.

I am no stranger to Nightwish, as this is he fifth time I saw them live, second time with Anette. I was mostly curious to see how this show would be similar, or not, to the previous one, and will the playset be the same.
To my surprise, as seen in the picture above, Anette sported a new haircut and last night wore this strange purple dress. A look that is a little different from what we were used to see.
Nevertheless, the chick rocked the place. Compared to a year ago, you can definitely feel that she is totally comfortable as the band's lead vocalist now. She has her niche and she made the group more alive on stage that Tarja ever manage to do (and I'm a Tarja fan).
Although I do not remember most titles of the songs (sorry about that), there is one song that I have never heard in a live show that they played last night. Something out of Century Child or Once.
Speaking of songs, the show mostly concentrated on the latest material. About 50%, if not 55%, were songs from Dark Passion Play. The usual The Poet and The Pendulum, Bye Bye Beautiful (the show's opener this time around) and Amaranth were of course present. The Islander set up remained also.

As much as the crowd were mostly young teens (range from 12 (for real) to maybe 24), the oldest generation, like myself, were extremely rare. Which made me think that maybe Nightwish's new direction, with new vocal and new sound, is now destined for a much younger, more accessible crowd. Same thing went with past songs. In the few "past" songs, you can find your usual Wishmaster, Ever Dream (which sounded horrible in the end, my only deception of the night), Dead to the World, Dark Chest of Wonders and Wish I had an Angel.
Ever Dream last night, with the odd vocal duo at the end.
Wishmaster is one of the two enjoyment I got that was composed before 2002. In fact, a lot of Tarja's signature songs are now gone from Nightwish's repertoire. No more Sleeping Sun, Over the Hills and Far Away, and shockingly, no more Nemo.
After the band's last goodbye on stage, a hardcore fan like myself could only feel that the "good old times" are now gone forever and here comes Nightwish's new era. There is nothing wrong with that, and seeing how most people accepts Anette nowadays, it was probably expected.
The very popular Amaranth.
Luckily for me, I saw the band three times with Tarja and had the joy of mentally recording some old classics in my head. Sadly, the new generation, the new target audience, won't be able to live this orgasmic experience. Well that is, aside from the actual set.

So is this second Dark Passion Play tour a necessity to go to? If you are a hardcore fan and need your annual dose of Nightwish like myself, then yes. If you like the band, and saw them previously with Anette in front, no it is not.
But it will be within a year or so, when the band eventually return with new material.
