Bibliophiles and history enthusiasts rejoice. Oakland’s Main Library, located at 125 14th St., is reopening on Dec. 2 following a six-month closure, the library administration announced Wednesday.
The main branch was shuttered for infrastructure repairs, including a new roof, upgraded electrical system, improvements to the heating and cooling, upgraded flooring, lighting, and ceiling upgrades. According to the press release, skylight repairs will continue through 2025 with minimal disruption to library patrons.
“We’re thrilled to welcome the community back to the Main Branch after these essential upgrades,” Oakland Public Library Director Jamie Turbak said in the press release “The improvements will create a more comfortable and enjoyable environment for all our visitors and staff.”

The library received $4.2 million from various sources, and the City of Oakland provided matching funds through Measures KK and U, which the Oakland City Council approved in October 2023.
The Oakland History Center, housed inside the main library, will also reopen, allowing in-person access once again to the center’s archival collections.
A grand opening celebration, including tours of the renovated spaces, will take place at a yet-to-be-announced later date.
