Chapter One
Sean fell onto the hotel bed. He was wound up and exhausted all at the same time. The flight was awful, it shouldn’t have been but, it was. And the heat as he stepped out of the airport was stifling. The sun brighter than, well the goddamn sun. Fuck if he could think coherently after flying. He just knew that it was hot and sunny and he was arsed off.
He moaned into a pillow as he tried to let the tension drain away so he could catch some sleep before showering and heading off to a meeting with Wolfgang. He had exactly three hours to collect himself which wouldn’t be a problem for a normal person but, normality had always seemed to allude Sean.
Sean was awakened some time later by the shrill sound of a ringing phone. So, I managed to fall asleep after all. Go me, he thought, until he looked at the clock before answering the phone and realized he was late to his meeting.
Fuck it all.
It was probably Wolfgang’s assistant on the phone just waiting to bitch him out about being late. He decided to let it ring and pretend like he had already left. He could say he got lost on his way. Or was attacked by bears. Were there bears in Malta? Probably not.
Fuck it all.
Where was his shoe? How the hell could he lose a shoe already? He hadn’t even unpacked so there wasn’t anything lying around the room to obstruct his shoe search. And why just one shoe? Who loses one shoe when they’re the only shoes in the room? Sean mumbled and cursed and then wondered aloud about early on-set Alzheimer’s when he finally found the missing shoe between the toilet and the tub in the bathroom. There had to be fucking shoe trolls in this room, how else could he explain a shoe next to the toilet. Who takes their shoes off next to a toilet? Oh, wait, correct that. Who takes A shoe off next to a toilet? Apparently Sean.
Fuck it all.
Sean finally managed to get completely dressed and to the meeting only to realize half-way through that Wolfgang was a strange little man with an accent that was hilarious. How was he going to concentrate on set with that voice yelling out directions? Thank fuck he didn’t have any scenes with Orlando otherwise he’d be absolutely screwed. He’d take one look at the kid and he’d lose it. He knew it. Orlando had the staggering ability to crack Sean up without doing a single thing. Not many people could make Sean laugh but, Orlando was one of them.
Orlando.
Sean smiled just thinking about seeing him again. He hadn’t seen him in person in almost a year. He had talked to him on the phone but, even that was four months ago. How had he managed to go that long without him? Sean wasn’t quite sure.
Orlando and Viggo were the two he had bonded with instantly during ‘Rings.’ He got the whole Viggo deal but, not the Orlando bit. He had been a twenty-two year old punk from the dance clubs of London, how he had managed to become one of Sean’s best friends will forever remain a mystery. But, he did. He and Sean became partners in crime. Always screwing with someone. Sean always thought he was a creative prankster but, Orli took it to its highest level. He made it an art form. Sean laughed just thinking about those times. Times, if he were to be honest with himself, he’d dearly love to return to. They were the best times of his life and he knew, although he didn’t want to openly admit it, that they were the best because Orlando was a part of them. He always made things better than what they could ever be on their own.
And, if Sean continued on this little truth trail, he’d have to admit that Orlando was the reason he signed on to do this film. When he had read the script he didn’t think it was all that remarkable and had thrown it into his reject pile. Then a few weeks later he heard that they were banding about Orli’s name to star as Paris. The script, much to Sean’s chagrin, worked its way into the ‘maybe’ pile. And when he heard through the grapevine that Orlando had signed on the damn script made its way into the one and only pile worth dealing with. The script also made a call to his agent telling him that he wanted the role.
Evil script.
And the script got even more evil as it continually called to him from his nightstand to re-read the Paris and Helen sex scene and just imagine how Orli would look in all his naked glory. On the sixth night of that Sean got up out of bed and set the damn script on fire and threw it in his sink. He got a disturbing thrill out of watching the fucking thing burn itself back to Satan’s lair where it belonged.
Unfortunately the disturbing images didn’t stop. He continued to think of how amazing Orli would look as Paris. He remembered the story of Paris from his brief fascination with mythology. A mortal man so beautiful he charmed even the gods, that is, until he pissed off Aphrodite. But, when you think about it, who didn’t piss off Aphrodite? Whatever. That was neither here nor there. What did matter, however, was that Paris was basically the male version of Helen, more beautiful than any other. And Sean couldn’t help but realize that they had cast the part perfectly.
More beautiful than any other.
Paris.
Orlando.
It was all the same thing.
Sean wasn’t quite sure when it was exactly that he fell in love with Orlando. The point where he went from, ‘Hey mate, lets go to the pub and grab a pint,’ to ‘My love, lets buy a farm in New Zealand and herd sheep and raise our adopted Cambodian baby together.’ It was a fine line between crazy and love and Sean had long since crossed it. At first, he only stepped up to the line, saw what it was like on the other side of the line but, never coming close enough to cross it. Then he started putting his feet right along the line, still on the sane side but, dangerously close to the crazy. As time went by and he spent more and more of it with Orlando he went from merely touching the line to jumping clear over the fucker and landing smack on the other side. At this point Sean was so far past the line that if he ever wanted to get back to it he’d have to hire a search and rescue team to help him find it. That damn line was long, long gone.
And so was he.
Not like anyone knew he was gone. He suspected maybe Vig had an inkling. He was way too perceptive for his own good, the old hippie bastard. He always looked closely at Sean whenever Orli was being particularly flirty or clingy or just plain Orli. Sean thought he probably noticed the slight look of panic that would run across his face every time Orlando would plop down into his lap for a cuddle and a talk. The panic of a man wanting nothing more than what he had in his arms at that moment but, scared as shit that anyone else would notice. Especially the little lap dog himself. Sean was inordinately proud of his ability to control his dick while Orli was near. Mind over matter. It was amazing what you could do when you put your mind to it, or mentally threatened your penis that you’d cut it off if it so much as twitched next to Orli. That usually had the ability to settle the situation right quick. At least until Orli started to wiggle and squirm and then it would triumphantly yell, ‘Gotcha!’ and Sean would have to dump him to the floor and make some excuse about having to piss or needing to meet with Peter.
Or needing to amputate his cock and balls.
You know, whatever works.
Orli wouldn’t notice a thing, he’d just keep talking from the floor like Sean hadn’t just tossed him there. It kind of made Sean wonder about the kid but, then it also made him love Orli more too. Orli and his amazing ability to go with the flow and just let things happen as they will, whether it be a toss to the floor or something more. It was as endearing as hell and Sean was properly endeared.
So, when the situation arose that he could make another movie with Orlando he jumped at the chance. He knew he didn’t have any scenes with the little shit but, he knew Orli would be beside him as much as possible. Some things change but, Orli’s love of his friends did not. If you were among the lucky then you were blessed for life. He’d never let you down and never falter in his loyalty to you. Sean was counting on that love to keep Orli near him for as much time as was humanely possible. He was going to use his month here to store up all the memories he possibly could so maybe they would maintain him through the times without Orlando that were yet to come.
As if he could ever store up enough memories. Hell, he’d had months to store up in New Zealand and they barely got him through that first month back at home without him. What the fuck would one single solitary month do?
Not much.
But, he was going to try.
