Q: Why self-published? This book is really good!
First of all, many self-published books ARE really good! So let's just get that out of the way.
It would make me happy to traditionally publish, I suppose, but frankly, querying was making me sad, and with things being what they are (vague ominous gesture), I thought the world needed my uplifting trans novel more than I needed to spend yet another year (or eternity) in the querying trenches.
Moreover, I believe in the strength of this novel. It takes a while to get going, but the payoff to all the footwork is so, so worth it. So much so, that I have gambled the success of a novel that is super dear to me on the sheer "word-of-mouthiness" of this novel. It's the kind of book that, when you finish it, you want to talk about it to anyone who will listen.
