Discussion of Casket of Souls
Hello everyone. Well, seeing as no one is starting any discussion and
stateofbalance' s post seemed perhaps a bit too specific or I don’t know, I thought I’d make a start then. After all, by now most of us have read the book, right?
Anyway, you know the drill, in case you haven’t read the book yet and don’t want to get spoilt, don’t read any further. And for everyone else, I hope at least a few will join me.
I’ll just start with two points I have also already been discussing with some wonderful people on tumblr.
1. Seregil and Alec’s relationship: Without question, at least for me, theirs is a great relationship, built on trust and friendship and far beyond a mere physical one. They have really grown together and are on an equal footing.
Of course, even they have their little quarrels but I, personally, think that’s just part of a relationship. One of those clashing points, I found rather interesting. In the scene when Alec comes back very late from nightrunning and Seregil doesn’t want to let him go nightrunning on his own anymore, Alec feels he’s being treated like a child and isn’t fully trusted. But I don’t think Seregil ever thought like this. He, of course, is simply terrified of losing Alec again – which is no wonder after having lost him once already. I would probably cling to him and never let go again in case something might happen to him (for a while at least).
Anyway, Alec automatically assumed it was because he was still so young and here’s the point: I tend to forget how young Alec still is. Somehow he has matured so much and has become just the more wonderful (I loooooooooove Alec ♥, did I mention that?), when his birthday party came I was like: oh, right, he’s only 21 now. xD
Which takes me to my second point: Atre.
Why does Alec never mention his suspicions to Seregil? I think that’s simply because Seregil isn’t at all suspicious towards Atre. Although Alec has matured so much and is usually confident in his skills (at least most of them), as he should be, it seems to me that because Seregil was so comfortable around the actor, he is questioning his own perception, perhaps also because Atre, charming and alluring as he might be, is somehow annoying Alec (and mostly on purpose).
As for Seregil, for once, his instincts fail him. Well, he’s obviously not infallible and can be outdone, which makes him only a more convincing, realistic character in my eyes than had he been perfect about whatever he was doing. Perhaps that also teaches Alec to be a bit more confident in his own skills and that it’s all right to second guess his lover once in a while. ;)
One last word from my side about Atre: well done Mrs Flewelling, well done. Most of the time I’d have liked nothing better than to wipe that smirk from his face – by breaking his nose or something like that. What a bigheaded prig. ;)
Okay, your turn.
