The Legion of Super-Heroes was a group of super-powered teenagers active on Earth-One in the 30th century. Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, the team's history continued on the resulting New Earth with only minor alterations. This timeline was later erased by Parallax during the Crisis in Time. However, following the events of the Infinite Crisis, their history was partially restored on the newly formed Earth-0. Some time later, Doctor Manhattan altered the past, removing this version of the team from the timeline once again.
The classic version of The Legion of Super-Heroes first appeared in Adventure Comics (DC, 1938 series) #247 (April 1958), in the Superboy story "The Legion of Super-Heroes".
This version was created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino.
After more than four years of guest appearances, the team was finally given its own ongoing feature beginning in Adventure Comics (DC, 1938 series) #300 (September 1962).
In 1986, the multiverse was destroyed, and was replaced by a single merged universe in Crisis on Infinite Earths (DC, 1985 series) #11 (February 1986). The Post-Crisis adventures of the Legion began in Legion of Super-Heroes (DC, 1984 series) #19 (February 1986). The most significant changes to their history were the introduction of the Pocket Universe Superboy and the complete removal of Supergirl.
In 1989, creators Keith Giffen, Tom Bierbaum, Mary Bierbaum, and Al Gordon jumped the story ahead five years, revealing that the Legion had since been disbanded. This saga began in Legion of Super-Heroes (DC, 1989 series) #1 (November 1989). However, an edict came down from management that Superboy must be removed from the Legion's history and the character Mon-El must be retroactively renamed. To accomplish this, the timeline was destroyed in Legion of Super-Heroes (DC, 1989 series) #4 (February 1990) and a new one was created in Legion of Super-Heroes (DC, 1989 series) #6 (April 1990). This new reality replaced Superboy, Mon-El, and Supergirl with Valor and Laurel Gand (and also added Kid Quantum and Richard Kent Shakespeare).
In 1994, the entire timeline was erased, as shown in Zero Hour: Crisis in Time (DC, 1994 series) #1 (September 1994), wiping out this version of the Legion. Refer to the Earth-247 Legion and the Earth-Prime Legion for the two versions that replaced them.
In 2006, due to the events depicted in Infinite Crisis (DC, 2005 series) #6 (May 2006), a new reality was created which restored the history of the classic Legion from their founding up until the Crisis on Infinite Earths. The first clear indication of this was in "The Lightning Saga", which began in Justice League of America (DC, 2006 series) #8 (June 2007). This is referred to by Legion fandom as the Retroboot Legion.
In 2019, Doctor Manhattan wiped out this version of the Legion once again, as revealed in Doomsday Clock (DC, 2018 series) #11 (November 2019). Refer to the Rebirth Legion for the version that they were replaced with.
