Will Eisner was an American comics artist and writer and who helped shape the modern comic book industry. He created the newspaper comic series The Spirit, published from 1940 to 1952. Eisner later produced instructional comics for the United States Army and founded American Visuals Corporation, which created educational materials. In 1978 he published "A Contract with God," a work that helped popularize the term “graphic novel.” He also wrote influential books about comics theory and storytelling.
