Description:

J’Onn J’Onzz of Mars, stranded on Earth, takes the form of a human and becomes a police detective using the name "John Jones". He becomes known as the Martian Manhunter.

Pre-Crisis Earth-One: Both of J'Onn's parents and his younger brother, T'Omm, are all alive.
Post-Crisis New Earth: Son of M'yrnn and Sha'sheen. Twin brother of Ma'alefa'ak (Malefic). J'Onn's wife, M'yri'ah, and daughter, K'hym, have been dead for centuries.

  • J'Onn J'Onzz first appeared in Detective Comics (DC, 1937 series) #225 (November 1955), where he became trapped on Earth as the "Manhunter from Mars"; he adopted the secret identity of "John Jones" and became a police detective.
  • His parents were introduced in Detective Comics (DC, 1937 series) #236 (October 1956).
  • He teamed up with the future members of the Justice League to combat Commander Blanx, as shown in flashback in Justice League of America (DC, 1960 series) #144 (July 1977).
  • J'Onn's presence on Earth was revealed in Detective Comics (DC, 1937 series) #273 (November 1959); he was named "Martian Manhunter".
  • He became a founding member of the Justice League of America, as shown in flashback in Justice League of America (DC, 1960 series) #9 (February 1962).
  • He was first shown to be a member of the Justice League in The Brave and the Bold (DC, 1955 series) #28 (February-March 1960).
  • His younger brother T'Omm was introduced in Detective Comics (DC, 1937 series) #287 (January 1961).
  • J'Onn first returned to Mars in Detective Comics (DC, 1937 series) #301 (March 1962).
  • He adopted an alien creature named Zook as his sidekick in Detective Comics (DC, 1937 series) #311 (January 1963).
  • "John Jones" was apparently killed in Detective Comics (DC, 1937 series) #326 (April 1964), so J'Onn abandoned that secret identity.
  • He assumed the identity of "Marco Xavier", a criminal who had apparently died, in House of Mystery (DC, 1951 series) #160 (July 1966).
  • His last recorded adventure with Zook occurred in House of Mystery (DC, 1951 series) #172 (January-February 1968).
  • J'Onn abandoned the Marco Xavier identity following House of Mystery (DC, 1951 series) #173 (March-April 1968), after defeating the real Marco Xavier and his criminal organization, Vulture.
  • He quit the Justice League in order to accompany his fellow Martians to find a new home in Justice League of America (DC, 1960 series) #71 (May 1969).
  • He rejoined the Justice League in Justice League of America Annual (DC, 1983 series) #2 ([October] 1984).
  • J'Onn resumed his John Jones identity in Justice League of America (DC, 1960 series) #248 (March 1986).
  • His origin was revamped in Martian Manhunter (DC, 1988 series) #1 (May 1988) - #4 (August 1988).
  • He took a leave of absence from the Justice League in Justice League America (DC, 1989 series) #60 (March 1992).
  • J'Onn first appeared in the civilian identity for Bloodwynd in Justice League Spectacular (DC, 1992 series) #1 (March-April 1992); he appeared as Bloodwynd from Justice League America (DC, 1989 series) #61 (April 1992) to #74 (May 1993).
  • He first appeared as The Bronze Wraith in Chase (DC, 1998 series) #6 (July 1998); his identity was revealed in Martian Manhunter (DC, 1998 series) #17 (April 2000).
  • It was revealed in Martian Manhunter (DC, 1998 series) #1 (December 1998) that J'Onn spent a year secretly observing the real John Jones, then took over his identity when he was killed.
  • Dr. Occult split the Martian Manhunter into J'Onn J'Onzz and John Jones in Martian Manhunter (DC, 1998 series) #28 (March 2001); when his John Jones half died in issue #31 (June 2001), J'Onn resumed the identity.
  • J'Onn was killed by the Secret Society in Final Crisis (DC, 2008 series) #1 (July 2008).
  • He returned as an undead Black Lantern in Blackest Night (DC, 2009 series) #1 (September 2009).
  • He was resurrected from the dead in Blackest Night (DC, 2009 series) #8 (May 2010).
  • First appearance in New 52 continuity in Stormwatch (DC, 2011 series) #1 (November 2011).
  • New 52 origin revealed in Martian Manhunter (DC, 2015 series) #10 (May 2016).
  • DC Rebirth origin revealed in Martian Manhunter (DC, 2019 series) #1 (February 2019) - #3 (April 2019).
  • J'Onn merged with Lex Luthor in Justice League (DC, 2018 series) #28 (Late September 2019); he separated from Luthor in issue #38 (Late February 2020).
