- Cliff Steele first appeared in My Greatest Adventure (DC, 1955 series) #80 (June 1963); named Automaton on the cover only.
- He was named Automaton in the story in issue #81 (August 1963).
- Cliff was referred to as a "robot man" in issue #80 (June 1963) and #82 (September 1963).
- He was named Robotman in the letters page of issue #83 (November 1963).
- He was first formally named Robotman in the story in issue #84 (December 1963).
