10 billion years ago, Krona attempted to view the dawn of time, which resulted in the birth of the Anti-Matter Universe, and caused the Positive Matter Universe to rupture into a Multiverse. The Monitor was spawned on the moon of Oa, at the center of the Positive Matter Universe, while the Anti-Monitor was spawned on the moon of Qward, at the center of the Anti-Matter Universe. A billion years later, the two engaged in a battle that lasted for a million years. In the end, they were both rendered unconcious, and they remained that way for the next 9 billion years. When they awakened, they resumed their conflict, which led to what has been called the Crisis on Infinite Earths. By the time the Crisis had ended, both the Monitor and Anti-Monitor had been killed.
It was later revealed that an earlier Multiverse had been formed by the celestial being known as Perpetua. She created Alpheus the World Forger to build the universes in the dark matter realm, and created Mar Novu the Monitor and Mobius the Anti-Monitor to guard them. After the sons helped imprison their mother, Mar Novu and Mobius became bitter enemies. Perpetua's fellow celestials reset reality so that it could evolve without her influence, but it became a new infinite Multiverse when Krona's experiment destabilized it. It is at this point that the Monitor appeared on Oa's moon and the Anti-Monitor on Qward's moon.
Following the events of Alexander Luthor's Infinite Crisis, a new Multiverse comprised of 52 universes was formed. The Anti-Monitor was reborn in the Anti-Matter Universe, however the Monitor was replaced by fifty-two individual Monitors (both male and female). At the end of the Final Crisis, these Monitors were erased from existence. Some time later, the original Monitor was reborn in the Positive Matter Universe.
