Description
Net counters first appeared on Merseine in Fallen Empires. It is an aura enchantment that enters the battlefield with 3 net counters on it. The enchanted creature cannot be untapped for as long as it has Net counters on it. The player can pay the creature's mana cost to remove one of the counters. This represents the creature being encased in a net unless it expends energy to escape.
Their next appearance was on the artifact Braided Net in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. Rather than being removed to free a creature, they are removed to tap a nonland permanent and disable its abilities for the turn.
Trivia
- In Magic Online, the counter is colored orange as it's considered a negative effect. It shares its icon with Pin, Rally, and Training counters[1]
