Description
Lesson is a spell subtype found on some instant and sorcery cards that represent instructional spells. Similar to Arcane, Lesson has no inherent rules, but can be referred to by other cards, either from learn's wish effect or directly in rules text. Lesson cards are marked by a scroll icon in the upper left corner.
History
Strixhaven: School of Mages used Lessons to represent spells taught within Strixhaven.[2] In this set, Lesson cards were primarily accessed from outside the game via learn,[2] the subtype appeared only on sorceries, and there are no cards with rules text that directly reference the subtype (other than learn's reminder text). In Strixhaven booster packs, there was a dedicated slot for common or rare Lessons, but if there was a rare Lesson, that would be the rare for the booster. Uncommon lessons appeared like any other uncommon.
Avatar: The Last Airbender used Lessons to represent the journey of learning and growth in the original series. This set contained no cards with learn, instead introducing cards that directly reference Lessons.[4][5] It also introduced eternal-legal Instant cards with the Lesson subtype.
Secrets of Strixhaven used Lesson as a cameo subtype, where it only appeared on a cycle of five Sorcery cards with Paradigm. This set also has no cards that reference Lessons at all, learn or otherwise.
Some playtest cards also played into the Lesson type. Mystery Booster 2 featured a white-bordered reprint of Environmental Sciences, and two playtest cards with the lesson type: Pyromancy 101 and There-theyre-their. The latter is the very first instant card with the Lesson subtype, predating Avatar: The Last Airbender. The 2025 Las Vegas Unknown Event featured the Twenty Lessons playtest card that allows the player to cast a random Lesson card without paying its mana cost.
