Explore the world through science and cinema with free public events from April–October 2026. With screenings, experiences, and live talks at Museum of the Moving Image, Open Worlds: Science offers hands-on fun, big ideas, and lively parties—free for all! 

Museum of the Moving Image and the Tezos Foundation expand their partnership with a new series of artist commissions exploring blockchain as a creative material, featuring installations on the Museum’s Herbert S. Schlosser Media Wall, events, and a public workshop track, the FA2 Fellowship.

This summer, Museum of the Moving Image becomes a gathering place for the World Cup, bringing audiences together for watch parties, family programming, hands-on animation activities, and special screenings.

Both a co-creation studio and an artist-led space, MoMI LAB provides free access to the technologies shaping everyday life while fostering understanding about their impact—the space opens June 13.

Outer space and alien blockbusters are back in a big way at the movies this year. Through a blend of video essays, film clips, live demonstrations, and expert insights by scientists, filmmakers, and cultural theorists, we'll show how an alien might decode the Voyager Golden Record, calculate the mathematical probability of life in the universe, use sound to reveal invisible structures of our universe, and ask why aliens always look so familiar in movies. We are pleased to present a summer series of movies mixed or re-released in Dolby Atmos. Prepare to be overwhelmed by a science-fiction blockbuster or a rousing musical or a psychological drama with brilliantly layered sound design or even a reconstituted classic—every Saturday this summer from July 25 to August 29. 

Khanevade: Portraits of Iranian Americans examines everyday stories of Iranians who have rebuilt their lives in the U.S. and contributed significantly to its civic and cultural life, while navigating questions of belonging and identity. Followed by a discussion with filmmaker Armon Mahdavi, journalist Farnoush Amiri, and scholar Mohsen Mobasher moderated by programmer Nick Kouhi.

In the late eighties and early nineties, American artists found themselves in the crosshairs of an ascendant conservative coalition. This also affected a great number of important filmmakers. This new screening series, programmed in conjunction with Isaac Butler’s new book The Perfect Moment: God, Sex, Art, and the Birth of America’s Culture Wars, highlights films that provoked the ire of these wannabe censors.
