I bought Meditation Dub at a record fair in Paris, some 25 years ago. I saw it and knew I had to have it.. I wasn't wrong: it's a remarkable record! For more reasons than one.
The dubs are awesome, ranging from early dub to late seventies steppers. Producer Winston Riley started out singing with The Techniques before moving into production in the late sixties, building a rich catalogue with artists like The Sensations, The Shades and Dave & Ansell Collins. That catalogue is the backbone of this album. What makes this album superb isn't just the dubs, it's the selection. Sometimes Riley uses the original riddims, true to early dub tradition. Other times he dubs an updated version of a classic, like Pat Kelly's "I'm in the Mood for Love." From cool rocksteady to stomping boss reggae to heavy steppers: it's all here... That's what made putting together this extended version such a treat.
