Meterwerx: A Techno DJ from Leeds, UK Early Years and Musical Passion
Born and raised in the vibrant city of Leeds, UK, Meterwerx discovered his love for music at a very young age. Growing up in a household filled with diverse sounds, he was exposed to a wide range of genres and styles, which ignited his lifelong passion for music.
It wasn't until the early 1990s, that Meterwerx found himself deeply immersed in the world of electronic music, particularly the ever-evolving genre of techno. His journey into techno was kickstarted by a collection of car-boot mix tapes, featuring sets by iconic DJs like Carl Cox, and local talents emerging from the thriving Leeds music scene at the time.
Early DJ Days and the Technics 1210's
Meterwerx fascination with techno soon led him to experiment with DJing. In the mid-90s, he acquired his first pair of Technics 1210 turntables, a defining moment in his musical journey. These
turntables became the tools with which he would craft his unique sonic experiences, blending beats and rhythms to create immersive techno soundscapes.
The Orbit in Morley: A Hub of Inspiration
As he delved deeper into the world of techno, Meterwerx found himself drawn to the legendary Orbit nightclub in Morley, just south of Leeds. This iconic venue served as a hub of inspiration, where
he soaked in the pulsating energy of the techno subculture. Attending the Orbit on a semi-regular basis, he experienced first hand the transformative power of electronic music within the heart of the Leeds underground scene.
The Club Wilderness and & "Grown Up Stuff"
Despite his deep-rooted passion for techno, Meterwerx eventually took a hiatus from the club scene, spanning approximately 12 years. He stepped away to focus on what many would call "grown up stuff"; prioritizing responsibilities and commitments outside the realm of music. During this time, his turntables gathered dust, and the pounding beats of techno were replaced by the rhythms of everyday life.
The Rekindling: COVID and the Return to Techno
The unexpected onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought about an unexpected turn of events. With the nightlife industry forced into hibernation, Meterwerx found himself with newfound time and a
yearning to revisit his old passion. The isolation of lockdowns reignited his love for techno and dance music. It was a moment of introspection and rediscovery that led him back to the turntables, and he knew it was time to reintegrate music into his life.
Becoming a Resident DJ
Fuelled by his revived passion for techno, Meterwerx took a leap into the digital age, connecting with the global techno community through the virtual realm. He became a resident DJ on Fnoob Techno Radio, where he currently hosts a show titled "All Things Techno” every 4 weeks.
