Title: [idek yet who wants to help me with this one]
Fandom: Marvel//Young Avengers
Characters/Pairings: Kate/Eli/Tommy. Yes.
Length: 2,223 motherfuckin' words.
Summary: Kate, Eli and Tommy are trying to work out how to function in a polyamorous relationship. Unsurprising to everyone, Kate is not part of the problem.

Eli didn’t find himself in this situation very often, and he generally regarded that as a good thing.

Tommy squirmed. He squirmed a lot and couldn’t seem to stay in the same place for longer than half a second and Eli found himself wondering how in the hell Kate could stand being with him but he suspected it was the wild part of her that he found so alluring. It was fine, though. The squirming was mostly the good kind of squirming and having a warm body in your lap is usually a good thing, especially when you’ve both had a few drinks.

They had had a few drinks. Eli could still taste the beer in Tommy’s mouth as he dug his fingers into Tommy’s hips and tugged him a little closer.

Right, the fact that his tongue was in Tommy’s mouth. That was one of those things Eli would happily be pushing out of his mind in about an hour, if not sooner.

But the fact was, Tommy was pretty good at this. Yes, he was squirming and he occasionally seemed to be looking for some hair to grab, but it never got boring and oh God his hand was in Eli’s pants.

Hand. In pants.

Eli grunted and quickly accepted this as part of the making out process, quite sure that Tommy had touched his junk at least once before anyway. What was the harm? This wasn’t gay, it was just two guys who slept with the same girl having some of their own... fun.

Okay, fun wasn’t the word for it starting right about when Tommy put his hand in Eli’s pants.

And then there was the giggling.

It wasn’t Tommy who was giggling, although that would be a very “Tommy” thing to do. No, the giggling was coming from somewhere else in the room, and it took Eli all of two seconds to realise that this was generally the time of night when Kate came home from work to find them sniping at each other.

They both turned to look at her in pure, inebriated shock as she struggled to get out a “no, keep going,” before she turned to walk into the kitchen and burst into a full cackle.

Eli frowned at Tommy for a moment before saying, “dude,” and gesturing to the hand that was still in his pants.

“Oh,” Tommy said. He pulled his hand out and slid off Eli’s lap and onto the couch beside him, looking a little confused and maybe even slightly ashamed, but Eli didn’t stick around to see. He was already doing up his pants and heading for the kitchen.

“Would you quit laughing,” he said, frowning at Kate as she fanned herself.

“It’s just not every day you come home and your two boyfriends are making out on the couch,” she said, wiping tears away from her eyes. Eli crossed his arms.

“We had a few beers,” he admitted.

She nodded. “I can see that.” There were empty bottles on the table.

A year ago, none of them would have laughed at this, or even thought it was possible. A year ago they were at the breaking point – Eli and Tommy each wanted Kate for himself, and Kate couldn’t possibly come up with a way to choose between them.

Eli fought with her for days on it: “You don’t get to have it both ways just because you don’t want to decide!”

And Kate fought back: “Why not? What if both ways is the only way I’ll ever be happy?”

And it went on like that for a month or two. Tommy basically fucked off for a while to fight crime with a couple lame-ass teams, assuming eventually it’d work out to be Kate and Eli again, just like it always did before. To his surprise, when he returned from a week-long trip down south, Kate told him that they’d be trying it, all three of them, just to see if it would work, and that if it didn’t then at least they’d know. He and Eli exchanged looks and he said, “yeah, sure, I can live with that.”

In all honesty he just wanted to be able to touch her without feeling like they were sneaking behind the future Captain America’s back or letting him down in some way. Being bad felt great for a while, but he was starting to have feelings – real feelings – for her, and having Eli on his conscience was no way to be in love.

So, they tried it, and everything about it was hard. The sex was hard – at first it was only Kate and Eli or Kate and Tommy, and that went on for a long time. Both of the boys had too much ego to even think about the other being with her like that, but Kate quickly found that alcohol was a quick solution for that.

Reflecting back on it now, as she began putting their beer bottles in the recycling bin, Kate thought it might be a little unhealthy that most of their discoveries as a cohesive three-way relationship had been made while under the influence, but if it wasn’t that then what would it be? None of them were alcoholics – not that anyone could be with the kind of metabolism that sobered you up within hours – and none of them were unhappy. Kate could tell when either of them was unhappy, and while they still got a little competitive at times, nights like this clearly told her that the three of them still had a lot of exploring to do and the boys were still right there beside her, ready to do it.

Back to the sex.

It was awkward when they tried it the first few times. Even drunk (or especially drunk), the boys still had egos, and Kate was less flattered and more frustrated when they began arguing about who would get to do what, so she started ordering them around. That was hardly any way to have an intimate relationship with anyone, so she told them to work it out or she was breaking up with both of them. That got them at least trying. Most of the problem was that they had such different styles – Tommy generally like to take advantage of his super speed, and Eli... well, Eli was an intense, intimate kind of guy. The thought of either having to slow down or speed up to accommodate the other was apparently hard for them to grasp, but once they got it, it was like flicking a switch the way everything just got better.

They all moved in together shortly after that. Eli and Kate split the rent on a two-bedroom apartment and Tommy pitched in whenever he could. Kate told everyone she was still living in her dad’s house, but no one really bought it. The only thing everyone else was confused by was the fact that Tommy and Eli were sharing an apartment without strangling each other, but no one knew that they had shared a lot more than that.

So things went on for a while. They had their good times and bad times and now Eli was slumping into a chair at the table, his arms crossed moodily.

“You don’t have to be so upset about it,” Kate told him, looking a little sympathetic now that she had stopped laughing.

“She’s right. Men and women alike can’t keep their hands off this,” Tommy said as he appeared in the doorway, all confusion and shame wiped off his face and replaced with his egocentric smirk that hadn’t ceased to annoy Eli just yet.

“For the record, your hands were on me.”

“Po-tay-to, po-tah-to. You still liked it.”

“So did you!”

Kate found this was the appropriate time to cut in with, “you both did! Can you just get over and accept it and do it again so I can watch?”

Eli shot her a glare. Tommy coughed.

“I’m joking.” She wasn’t. “Look, it’s probably confusing because you’ve both happened to be having sex at the same time, and you happened to enjoy it, so being attracted to each other like that isn’t really a big deal.”

“But I’m not gay!” Tommy said, throwing his hands out. “You’ve got me confused with my brother!”

Kate sighed and rested her chin in her hand, much too tired to have this conversation with Tommy right now. She looked at Eli.

“Just promise me you won’t freak out if you start having urges,” she said. “By the looks of it you were doing a fine job accepting them before I walked in.”

Eli rolled his eyes and said, “Whatever.” Tommy was busy checking for gunk under his fingernails, but she knew he was listening.

“I’m going to bed. If one of you wants to sleep in the other room or you both want to sleep in there together, that’s fine, just don’t wake me up fighting about it.”

As she walked out of the room, Eli turned to glare up at Tommy, who couldn’t seem to muster a more mature response than sticking his tongue out and following Kate to bed.

Eli would stay up a while longer to think. That was just one of those things he did.

It would be another couple years before Kate realised that if she thought it was good before, she had no idea how a good threesome really worked.

Eli and Tommy had actually started being thoughtful about each other. She noticed it one day at breakfast when Tommy made one of his stupid cracks and Eli just snorted lightly and kept eating his toast. Shortly after that, they actually negotiated a way to get all three of them to work using their one car (Kate’s car) that would get them all to their destinations on time. She didn’t say anything about it, worried that their egos would get the best of them and they’d start fighting again just for the sake of fighting; she just kept it to herself. Briefly, she worried if she had changed them for the worse, forcing them to stay together with her like this, but when Billy said to her, “If this was my magic, I’m not undoing it. Ever,” she just smiled, sat back and watched her two boyfriends treat each other like human beings.

Of course, that wasn’t all they were doing.

They had had some issues sorting out who would be “on top” more than once. Generally during those discussions Kate just laughed and told them both they’d been on the bottom plenty of times with her, to which they proclaimed that it’s different with two guys, which usually freaked them out and they didn’t want to talk about it anymore. Kate told them they could just not worry about it and switch, like Billy and Teddy, but that freaked them out even more and then they’d give her the silent treatment. They still pointedly weren’t gay, and Kate didn’t bother arguing with them on that one. She didn’t care, as long as this was working out.

Eventually though it came down to alcohol once again. Kate went away for a few days, partly to visit Clint and partly to report to Captain America, and when she came back they had done it. There was a full blue bag of empty beer bottles ready to go out on recycling day when she walked in the door and they were in bed together, all twisted up in the sheets and so lucky they were both immune to hangovers. There was also a half-finished game of Risk on the kitchen table, and Kate was just happy that they had at least had company when they started drinking because she could clearly see Teddy’s “tried and true” method with his little green markers spreading over the right side of the board.

She got down to her underwear and a t-shirt and crawled into bed between them (because like hell would they be cuddling) and they each wrapped an arm around her.

“How was your trip?” Eli mumbled into her hair.

“Good. I’ll tell you all about it over brunch. How was having the weekend to yourselves?”

Tommy nuzzled in a little, pouting. “Eli fucked me,” he said moodily. “I’m very upset about it.”

Eli sighed. “Whatever.”

Kate smiled and turned on her side so that her back was against Eli’s chest and she could pull Tommy in and wrap her arm around him. “Well, what would make you not upset about it?” she asked, rubbing his back.

“Well, you’re home now, so I guess that makes things a little better,” he said, suddenly grinning and bringing his head forward to kiss her.

Eli grunted and Kate smiled, twisting her head to give him a kiss too.

“Now you two,” she said with a giggle. Eli responded with a grunt, to say “no,” but Tommy was already pushing himself over Kate to cheekily kiss Eli’s frown away. He only got thrown back onto his side of the bed as Eli said, “get off, you jerk,” and Kate just laughed, pulling Tommy back in to cuddle again.

“I’m glad we did this,” she said.

“Did what? Bought a bed that’s too small?” said Tommy.

Kate grinned, staring right into Tommy’s smirking eyes.

“Yes.”
