Vida: Season 1

So many of the series we see on television are just cartoons, even when they aren't. Vida is a bright exception. It is a beautifully presented story of realistic people with realistic problems. The depth and honesty of the characters and their problems would be enough to make this series great. But Vida is also blessed with a sly wit and a welcome hopefulness. Miss this show at your peril.

Like the first season the second started a bit slow for me. But it picks up. Some great new characters arrive on the scene. And the three main characters finally start scoring victories against the seeminlgy invincible Russian mob who stole Izzie's first creation, GenCoin. It has moments of clunky writing and isn't always believable, but it's still great story telling. Definitely underrated.

The first episode was good. The second was pretty bad. I couldn't get past some of the kids' dialogue. Unrealistic and bordering on cringeworthy. At that point I decided to quit watching. Fortunately, there was nothing else to watch, so I reluctantly tried episode 3. The season turned around for me at that point and I enjoyed it. It was a bit uneven and some of the treatment of the young children still was off, but overall, it was entertaining and well done.

Underrated! No, it's not Breaking Bad, but what is? This has great, complex characters. Suspenseful. You can't help but think about these characters and their choices and the consequences of those choices. I'm looking forward to season 3.

I am gobsmacked that it gets a review of 100. One user commented that the show tries too hard and I agree. I'm six episodes in and nothing makes sense. The storytelling, filming, and writing are just mediocre. It's not very sharp or intelligent. I can forsee the time when I no longer care about the characters or the story.

When Connie Britton left and CMT took over, Nashville dwindled to a mere shadow of its former self. Compelling characters and moving story lines went stagnant. The show lost its way. For awhile, it became almost unwatchable. Then, in the last half of Season 6, the magic was rekindled. I'm sorry to see this excellent show go, but at least it went out solidly on its feet. A good end to an excellent series.

Through some bizarre turn, the metacritic rating for this show is the same as that for Orange is the New Black, proof that one can't take professional reviews as gospel. Burden of Truth is a likeable, well-intended story of a small town taking on corporate greed. It's well-trod territory and nothing new. It will not make you think, it will not startle or surprise you, but if you watch through to the end, you can have the comfort and satisfaction of knowing that sometimes the good guys win.

There is a sweetness to the show that allows us to forgive its many failings. Yes, the unrealistic portrayal of a young doctor with autism is troubling and uneven. The writing is sometimes dorky in the extreme. But the series' loving exhortation to see the person and not the disability and its general kindness makes it ultimately quite watchable.

It's more watchable than most of these types of shows so far. But it's ridiculous that they're portraying Connie Britton's character as having a romantic interest in Oliver Stark's very immature character. It's a disservice to Britton who brings such presence to the screen. It's almost as ridiculous as the 90 pt rating by the Wall Street Journal. Still, it's something to do while you wait for the great shows.

Mar 8, 2018
User scores better reflect the quality of this effort (and shows in general). It's beautifully done, but doesn't go beyond what is already known about the situation in Flint. It ends up feeling like any other cop show. If it provided more than just the perspective of the police and told the broader story--the story we don't get from the news--it might have been more interesting and enlightening. We see the police perspective in the news and in about half of the tv shows. The high professional reviews are puzzling.

There is something rich and beautiful and celebratory about "The Good Fight." As with most sequels the matter of whether they can keep the magic of the original is always a question. But "The Good Fight" does a brilliant job of keeping just the right amount of the original without losing its own identity. Intriguing, engaging, and joyful.

I wish there were more TV series like this--fully developed characters, intelligent, and gripping. Kyra Sedgewick is masterful, as always, as a highly successful woman burning the candle at both ends to maintain her success and her relationship with her daughter. She priortizes work and the relationship with her daughter and all other aspects of her life are strained at best. This is unpredictable and gripping as well as intellectually satisfying.

I love it. It's a classic David and Goliath story with a modern spin. The character's are great. Ronnie, the reluctant gang leader, Izzie the girl genious, and Nick the soft-hearted rich boy. They're the three muskateers in an impossibly dangerous business world. However many beat-downs they take they keep getting back up. You can't help but root for them and you can't stop believing that they'll overcome the odds. If the story line strains credibility every now and then, it's easy to forgive because the show is so engaging. I can't wait to watch each episode.

Maybe the children's movies should be reviewed by children so the professional reviewers don't get confused. Please, more grownup fare.

I'm on episode three and find myself unable to stop watching. By coincidence, I just finished reading "Whoever Fights Monsters: My Twenty Years Tracking Serial Killers for the FBI" by Robert K. Ressler. True Crime has never really been my thing but Ressler's book, which covers much of the same ground as the series (based on "Mindhunter" by John E. Douglas), was interesting, if dark and disturbing. Surprisingly, Mindhunter the TV series is often funny, while still remaining fascinating and staying mostly true to the actual events. The well drawn characters make this show a must watch.

Gypsy has potential that it never reaches. Simultaneously attempting to tell a half dozen stories, it never keeps focus long enough to hold your attention. As others have said, the writing is weak at best and often downright strange. And the character played by Watts is so unsympathetic by the end of the season I could barely watch. At times the chemistry between Watts and Cookson is great, but more often, the strange dialogue and the toxicity of Watt's character throws it off. Watts and Cookson are great actresses, they just can't overcome the truly bad material. I kept watching, hoping it would gain traction, but it just got worse. By the end, you don't care what happens. My hope, maybe a foolish one, is that there will be a second season and that it overcomes the mistakes of the first.

The second season of Fortitude reminds us that in times before, when life was not so certain or easy, we needed stories to warn us of the dangers of the world. In the isolated town of Fortitude an old tale about a Demon is played out. The community of Fortitude is confronted with ancient and modern evils and this unique and very well done series takes us along as the brave community struggles against evils that threaten their bodies and their souls. With rich, believable characters, Fortitude goes deep into the shadowlands of demons and shamans, myth and mystery, human courage and fear to remind us of the monsters that always lurk.
