Toliver was a theoretical scientist who built upon Dr. Culla's work in the creation of Midnight Spheres. Toliver's variances and calculations were used by Engineer Thyner to try to create a massive Midnight Sphere around Starfleet's secret facility, "The Yard". However, Toliver's theories proved incorrect in practical application, and were modified by Spock. (TOS - Constellations short story: "Devices and Desires")
