Shadow of the Machine is a TOS eBook, one of three released in the 2010s decade by Pocket Books. Written by Scott Harrison, the story began four days after the events of TOS movie: The Motion Picture and featured the birth of Hikaru Sulu's daughter Demora Sulu.

Background
- Susan Ling's address, an apartment at 1738 Ocean Avenue in San Francisco, is a real-world location, the site of a kidney care center in the 21st century. The story did not clarify whether Schar's bar would be found on Fourth Street or Fourth Avenue.
- The USS Enterprise was emptied in drydock for a radiation detoxification procedure similar to the 24th century baryon sweep of the USS Enterprise-D in TNG episode: "Starship Mine".
- Peter Kirk's personal turmoil as seen in this story would lead to him becoming a research scientist before enrolling in Starfleet Academy. (TOS comic: "Bloodline", TOS novel: Sarek)
Continuity
- This story presented an alternate sequence of events immediately following The Motion Picture. Other stories set in that period, such as TOS - Untold Voyages comic: "Renewal", TOS comic: "Debt of Honor", and TOS novel: Ex Machina, showed the USS Enterprise completing its shakedown and traveling far from Earth before returning.
- Sources conflicted with regard to Demora Sulu's origins. ST video game: Starship Creator reported that she was born in Fremont, California to Yoshiko Sulu in 2271, while TOS - Unlimited comic: "Trekkers" cited her birth prior to the end of the Enterprise's five-year mission in 2270.
- The story introduced a son born to Joanna McCoy circa 2269 and mentioned that her parents' divorce resulted in Joanna not speaking to her father for many years. This more rocky relationship for Joanna and Leonard was featured in TOS comic: "All the Infinite Ways". However, other accounts of Joanna's activities that year – TOS novels: Crisis on Centaurus, The Better Man and TOS - Year Four: The Enterprise Experiment comic: "Part 3" – depicted them having a friendlier relationship and did not mention a pregnancy. A different son, Conner, was born circa 2281 according to TOS novel: Shadows on the Sun.
