Quasar

A quasar was a naturally occurring phenomenon in space, an energy emission caused by the effects of matter being pulled into a super-massive black hole at a galaxy's center. The term quasar-like formation was often use to describe emissions similar to quasars that were generated more locally and not at the center of a distant galaxy. (TOS episode: "The Galileo Seven")

History and specifics

After a massive eruption of the microquasar Murasaki 274 in 2263, all Starfleet vessels are required to investigate and monitor all microquasars and quasar-like phenomena they encounter, to be able to prepare for disastrous eruptions that may occur in the future. (TOS novel: The Captain's Oath)

Antimatter quasars are exceptionally rare. (DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: Cathedral)
